Customers are saying

Customers recognize the DSC-HX400's superior camera quality, ease of use, and lightweight design as significant advantages. Many appreciate its impressive features and good battery life, along with its ability to perform well in low-light conditions. However, some users find the camera's size to be a drawback, and a few have expressed concerns about the lens cap and focusing capabilities. Overall, positive feedback on image quality and usability outweighs the negative comments regarding size and accessories.

I have come to the decision that for the money a bridge camera will give you the best all around camera for the money you invest. I own three now and each one has its advantages. The HX400 is a solid feature laden camera. The glass used in the lens is top notch. The focus is quick so any sports or Birding shots are not lost. As far as low light photos go being it has a small sensor it can struggle to find focus. My other cameras are a Fuji S1. Another bridge with one big plus. A Weather resistant 24 to 1200 mm which is great for Florida. Also has a hard time in low light. The last and a great all around piece of equiptment is the Lumix FZ200...very bright F28 lens which will keep the F28 up to 600mm. The HX400 is a very good camera....I had to buy a second one as I sold the first one and missed having a really good fun camera. Enjoy

This camera is capable of pulling long distance photos up close. Other reviews have said it is not a night camera - they are incorrect. It takes great low level shot. After it takes a low light shot, you can watch it adjust the shot to a clearer photo. It is not a pocket camera, but with hand strap it is easily carried without fear of dropping it. It has the best lens stabilizer I've seen, but the longer the shot, the greater care you have to use to get a clearer shot. I haven't tried a 256 GB SD card, but it easily addresses a 128 GB card. There is not normally a big delay between the press of the shutter button and the camera being ready for the next shot. Best yet it has a Carl Zeiss lens. It is not an all weather camera - take care in inclement weather and in dusty environments. Love this camera.

    So much to learn

Sony Cybershot DSC-HX400V REVIEW I just purchased this Sony 7-16-2018. I had read about the great zooming, It Is truly amazing! I mean amazing! But no one really talked about macro much. I have a little Canon Power shot SX710HS that takes the best macro pics and 30x zoom but I wanted more, so I bought a friends used Nikon P600, the zoom is great, and I got good photos on sunny days but the barrel started to stick, plus macro wasn't as good as my Canon. So I got this Sony 400, I took this Sony out of the box and used Auto for all the flower pics in bright sun on the river bend and for the most part they were all great, but I couldn't get focused up close on some of them. I don't know what ISO 200, 800, Aperture etc means, when do I use those settings? I need to learn that stuff, So I used auto. One problem I had with this Sony, as soon as you turn the camera on, it wants you to set the date, I'm not sure if it's just me but it won't set and stay so I have to hit cancel everytime I turn the camera on. When I press cancel, it goes to a screen "go to www.sony.net/pm for playmemories software". So I have to press two things before I can even begin to photograph. So let's get to MACRO, my Canon I can zoom to a bee on a flower and see pollen on it's legs and it is in focus. I can take a photo of just the bee, I've tried and tried to get that close on this camera but it loses focus each time. I got ants on a leaf (see photo) but it won't let me zoom into the ant. I turned the ring on the camera and it would show me the ants up close on the monitor but then it didn't capture the photo that way. Today was partly cloudy, I got great photos of a squirrel in the tree but not of birds on a feeder. I took from across the yard to behind a tree 4 feet away from the feeders. Being in the correct setting would've helped I'm sure. Not having a portable charger I thought would be no big deal, well it is! Having to plug the entire camera into the wall outlet especially with such a short charger cord is ridiculous and takes a lot longer than a portable charger. I will have to see if there's a charger I can buy and get an extra battery. If there is I suggest you buy one also. The Nikon 600 you can edit photos right on the camera, I haven't found that on this Sony yet. Oh the volume for the shutter, The Sony 400 kept showing function is disabled when trying to turn the shutter sound down. I did an online chat with Sony and he kept saying to record a video and I could then change the volume, it took 20 min for him to understand I just wanted to change the shutter volume, he finally said there's not a volume, it's either on or off. Ok so ISweep Panorama onscreen instructions say move the camera left or right or up/down. I kept trying the up and and it didn't work. First you have to go to menu, to the camera icon and scroll down to Panorama direction and set the way you want . Now on to Handheld Twilight setting, it's better than what I expected from reviews. I wish I could post more than 2 photos here to show you. Haven't tried night photos yet. And lastly, don't do what I did by just going to auto and start taking photos because there is actually a wonderful camera guide in the camera (that I just now found) that tells you tips and what setting to use for different lighting and where to find the setting in the controls. So turn the camera on, go into a shooting mode, press the ? button on the bottom right side and then menu and the onscreen help comes up. There's apparently a lot packed in this camera but it will take a beginner like me awhile to learn it. But my suggestion is go for it! 4 stars only because it's my 2nd day to use it and had problems with not getting the up close like I wanted. Maybe the instructions will help me with that now that I know they are there in the camera

I needed a camera that took still and photos in motion with high clarity. The 50X zoom is the greatest thing ever. I'm still learning everything it does and each time I find something else it just amazes me. This camera gives you all the fantastic features of a DSLR camera without having to buy extra lenses....although I recently found out that you can get other lenses for this camera. It's simple to use, and with a point and zoom and shoot you can get those amazing photos that you see everyone with a high tech camera get without major cost and without trying to change lenses. I bought an extra battery and a 64 Gig card and went on vacation.....using it several days taking video and photos and never used all the space on the card. The only thing I wasn't happy with was it could have used a better How To guide. I would have loved to have a guide that showed every single thing that the camera could do on different settings. Would have made learning all of it a bit easier but overall....this camera is fantastic and I recommend it if you want fantastic photos without a DSLR cost.

I wanted a camera that's easy to use right out of the box and that's what I got. Left the next day for a two week trip out west and I took hundreds of pictures. Love the zoom and the battery held up the entire time without recharging. I couldn't be happier

Great camera for the value. Has a ton of features that can be turned on or off on the lcd menu. The beauty of this camera is the 50X physical zoom and up to 100X digital zoom. Can be used as a point and shoot or as a professional DSLR camera. No need to buy extra lenses except for extreme shots. The down side is that it is a bit bigger than a standard point and shoot camera, same size as a full size DSLR. Has a nice 3 inch LCD screen and a physical view finder. Has a small instruction manual and a larger pdf to download and print later 300 pages!

This is my second point and shoot from Sony in the past 8 years. The ease of use in automatic mode is matched with the great results in quality and sharpness. The camera performed great, especially capturing my kids that never seem to stand still. The only flaw is the lens cover does not come with a lanyard, so keeping track of it was a constant concern. The battery lasted for three days of picture taking. You need to purchase an extra battery and standalone charger. The camera only comes with one battery and must be plugged into the wall to charge via USB. If not for the battery issue I would have gave it 5 stars.

I have had this camera for a few weeks now & it's becoming my go-to point and shoot camera (I also have a Nikon dslr & a couple of other long zoom point and shoots). I like taking pictures of wildlife mostly. This camera focuses very quickly and tracks moving objects very well. The long zoom on this camera is fantastic. The dslr can still take better pictures but if you don't want to carry multiple heavy lenses, this camera works as a great substitute.

I am upgrading from the DSC-H5 to the DSC-HX400. I will start by pointing out that the camera does everything Sony says it will do. Specifically useful to me are - image stabilization (clear pictures at full zoom) - good clarity in low light - good automatic composition (auto mode and super auto mode) - battery life is much better than the H5 The HX400 behaves like a higher end DSLR. A couple of things I don't like: - the HX400 is bigger and heavier than the H5 - pop-up flash is not auto-pop-up even on force flash setting. The biggest beef with this camera compared to the H5 is the fish-eye starting point of the zoom lens. The H5 started out at 36mm equivalent which was fine for taking group photos - low distortion if any on the edges. The HX400 starts at 28mm equivalent which really stretches the faces of anyone outside the central ~2/3 of the composition. Zooming in to 1.5X fixes the issue but kills the spontaneity. Hey Sony, can we get a setting to wake the camera up to a certain zoom level (but everything else stays automatic)? In general a great camera that takes some getting used to.

This is a phenomenal camera for the price. I bought this as a second camera for my wife to use while on safari. She's kryptonite to anything technology if it can break or stop working she will find a way to make it happen. With this camera however, she ended up taking some amazing photos on our trip of fast moving animals at distances I couldn't believe. The videos turned out even better. Reasons to buy: -This a great does-it-all camera: Enough megapixels to take photos for large print, good enough glass to make them clear and more -The 50x (1600mm equivalent) zoom takes great photos at long distances with the right lighting - my wife got photos of monkeys at 500 yards that my 200mm/F2.8 would never be able to. The clarity was phenomenal and some will be on our wall, you'd swear we were closer -The video quality is outstanding and the slow zoom makes for great landscape shots that zoom in on objects far away -GPS- We were deep in the African bush and when I synced our photos all of them were geotagged, pretty cool -Wifi - Using the playmemories app on Android or iPhone, you can control the camera and take photos or send your best ones to your phone from the camera for sharing online -If you are already bought into Sony's camera line: this takes the same batteries and has the same menus as many others -Viewfinder is good enough, it gets the job done. For better long distance shots, this is a must and is why the cheaper long zoom cameras without an EVF are just about useless -Build quality is really good. The camera is also super light

I wanted a mega zoom camera primarily for sporting events to accompany my Sony a6000. I have been amazed at the results. The picture quality is as good as those taken with my a6000. I zoomed in on several occasions form midway up in the stands down the right field line, and the photos were sharp and detailed. The camera is easy to use and also does well in low light. I am sold on this amazing Sony camera. If you want a product that rivals an SLR but without the hassle of changing lenses, this is the one for you.

Having upgraded from an old point-and-click camera, I was nervous about how complex this new camera would be. But though I am still learning how to use all of the different options and features, the camera is extremely easy to use and the picture quality is excellent. I especially love the front-right grip as it makes so much easier to take clear photos. Great camera!

This is a great camera. You have a lot of fun playing with the settings and it's very user friendly. The zoom is amazing and it has very little to no shake at all when zoomed in all the way. I would definitely recommend it and especially now that it's $50 off the regular price.

This camera does everything I could possibly want and still has a ton of features left over for the more experienced or sophisticated photographer. Beautiful pictures with an unbelievable zoom lens. Easy to operate and navigate features while feeling great in my hands. The battery is powerful and long lasting. Just took a trip out west to several of our National Parks and took almost 1000 pictures.....the results from this camera were fabulous! I am very glad I chose this camera.
