Not what I expected - Oops!

Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.When I play a wide screen movie, it comes out compressed on the screen, making everything looking thin and tall. There is nothing on the remote to change that. On my old Toshiba VHS/DVD player, it automatically adjusts for that, but not the Sony DVD player. I had to put aside the Sony Player and hook back up my Toshiba VHS/DVD player after getting serviced so I can watch movies in better formats. I do not recommend this Sony unit for wide screen movies. It is okay for old standard screen movies from the 1940's, etc, or recorded TV shows, but not movies with wide screen.

||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.The DVD function is perfect. Occasionally, it hangs up on turnoff, meaning it doesn't always turnoff. Or perhaps it's in some limbo state because it won't turn On next time. I have to completely unplug it from power and plug it in again before it will function properly.

Bought this, without buying the protection plan because I thought SONY was a good and reliable brand. I bought the simplest blu-ray player for my elderly father who just wanted a simple dvd player for watching old movies. We played it maybe 10 times and after exactly 3 weeks, it stopped working. It had passed the return date for Best Buy, so I had to pay to ship it back to SONY. Hopefully, Sony will send me a new one, since this one stopped working within 30 days. The return postage was more than the protection plan. It just seemed crazy to have to buy a protection plan for almost everything you buy, but I guess you just can't assume that the product you buy will actually work.

Remote arrived broken

I installed my DVD player and the remote did not work at all. I contacted tech support. After a 35 minute conversation of ridiculous solutions, I was told I must A) prove I had purchased the item and B) mail the entire unit back and wait for a new one. Its just the remote! So I guess I go without a DVD player even longer while it travels the country and goes into the abyss of customer service....

It wouldn’t turn on no matter what I did. So I returned it and got another one. It also didn’t work well and I returned it and got a refund.

We are so sorry to hear that the Sony DVD player with HD Upconversion did not meet your expectations, however this unit can only play certain formats like: DVD Video, CD (CD-DA), Video CD, Super VCD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-R Dual Layer and many more, but it cannot play Blu-ray discs, we recommend you to go with the following models: BDP-S1700, BDP-BX370, BDP-S3700, BDP-S3500 and BDP-BX650.
