Great lens for the price
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I own the a7, so my review is based on my experience with that model. I agree with the multiple comments regarding the slow autofocus and the loud motor noise when focusing. The relatively cheap kit lens SEL2870 is far better than this F/1.8 lens in those two areas. However, I decided to keep this lens because it is SHARP and it is a F/1.8. I left my kit lens and my Zeiss SEL2470Z at home during a baseball game, and I was forced to get creative with this lens to take shots. Here are some ideas that worked somewhat well for me: 1- Slow autofocus - a) Use the DMF or S mode. If you use the continue autofocus, the lens might get into a vicious cycle of focusing and never truly focusing. b) Use Flex Spot (small or medium). If you use Wide area, the lens will try to focus in a wider area, and it may struggle finding focus. Help the lens, and tell the camera where to focus. 2- Loud motor a) This is an annoyance that makes its way to the video sound. The only way I found to make it workable is to do videos of subjects moving within the focus area. If the subject moves out of the focus area two things happen: 1) The subject gets blurred for a longer period than usual, 2) The motor noise will make its way to your video. I decided to keep this lens for low light shots, and avoid videos in most cases. The lens is sharp, and for the money I believe it is great.
