Useless...even with Sony TVs

I have a brand new Sony Bravia (excellent TV) and bought this so I could watch late at night when I can't sleep without disturbing anyone. The Sony TV (as well as my LG TV) don't have a 3.5mm audio out port. They also don't have RCA out ports. What they do have is Toslink and HDMI. What TV were they making this product for? Ones made 10+ years ago?

My TV does not have a headphone jack, but was told I could use with RCA outputs and adapter. Hooked up with adapter and it would not work. Tried to return and Best Buy would not take it back because it was more than 15 days from purchase...about 22 days. I have spent $1000's at Best Buy, but will not shop there anymore!
