After reading rave reviews about this lens in various forums and being a little disappointed by the more budget-friendly Sony FE 1.8, 50mm - I swapped it out for this and has been on my camera since. The pictures are crisp, there is just a beautiful vibrance to the colors that I can't find in my zoom, and the autofocus is fantastic.

Beginner here, purchased to replace a7iii kit lens and very happy with the decision. Did a ton of research and boiled it down to the 55 and 85 but chose the 55 since I bought the camera to take photos of newborn. Light weight, smaller size, sharp and bokeh are all as advertised and as others have reviewed. Lens gives the professional look and feel I expect from expensive camera and glass.

This is a great Zeiss-Sony lens - although not the newest in Sony’s collection. It consistently receives top reviews and I can confirm it delivers sharp pictures. It only offers a focus ring for manual focusing - but simplicity is a strength in its case.

The Sony/Zeiss 1.8/55 is a must have for A7 users. I have the A7RII, and in this combination, this lens is flawless. Excellent color, contrast, no vignetting and the lens is sharp corner to corner. Build quality is excellent and the size and weight are a nice compliment to the A7 bodies. I use the B+W Xs-Pro HTC Polarizer with it and the results are stunning.

Bought this to go with my brand new A7III as I wanted a standard prime to go on it when I put the camera in my messenger bag. As tempted as I was by its bigger brother the 50mm f/1.4 its a much larger and heavier lens and not as practical for just tossing in your bag and carrying around with you Optically its fantastic, Sharp as a tack and has excellent color and contrast right from the gate at f/1.8 which is very impressive. The Bokeh, while a subjective thing, to me brings to mind my Sigma 50mm "Sigmalux" which has legendarily good bokeh. The more expensive and heavier f/1.4 is better due to the extra aperture blades, but again, its at the cost of significantly more weight and bulk. A lot of reviews have trashed this lens VS its bigger brother but I think its honestly unfair, and in my opportunity to test both of them side by side honestly, there isnt a huge difference between the two of them, especially when you account for the huge price differential. The lens has so far done a marvelous job and delivered multiple shots with fantastic color and sharpness for me, The autofocus is extremely fast and accurate on the A7III and I've had little to complain about. Build wise the lens uses a lot of metal and screams "quality", the lens hood is likewise metal with a slight rubber coating on the end of it where you might knock it against something, a really nice touch. If I had to complain about anything, id say i dislike the minimum focus distance and maximum magnification, but thats pretty much equal for all 50mm lenses across the board, simply put, i wish the lens focused closer and had a bit more in the maximum magnification department. But again, No other 50mm-class lenses that arent macros do either so its not something I see as a big deal. Oh and Sony's rear caps kind of stink compared to well..everyone else ive ever used (Nikon, Canon, Micro 4/3) I dont know what it is about them, but I dont like them very much.. Overall though, those are very tiny complaints and I feel this is probably the best general purpose 50mm-type lens in Sony's lineup right now. Dont hesitate to get one if you're in the market for or want a lens in this class.

This lens is super Sharp! before this lens, I had the cheap 50mm 1.8 FE Sony lens. and this lens is just a day and night difference. the focusing on this lens is really fast and accurate. the low light is great as well. I use this with my A7rII and I almost always shoot with this lens.

I fell in love with this lens! The bokeh is dreamy and ita become my main lens so far. I use it with my Sony Rii camera and i coupdnt recommend this lens enough. I know the price is much more then I would ever pay for a lens but, its definitely worth it.

I purchased this lens after seeing reviews for my Sony A7iii camera and must say the sharpness is outstanding! The bokeh effect is perfect and is totally worth the price for any filmmaker that shoots music videos or short films.

I purchased this lens due to its excellent repetition as being extremely sharp to use on my Sony A7Rii and Sony A6000. I have many legacy 50-58mm lens which I love but none are as sharp as the FE 55mm wide open. Some folks think that this lens is too perfect or too technical but I love the uniform sharpness across the width. I also love eye focus on the A7Rii and how fast focus is when using it on the A6000.

After watching and reading many reviews bout this 55mm 1.8 Zeiss, I finally pulled the trigger and bought this lens. Wow! What an amazing lens! Very sharp and crisp with buttery smooth bokeh! I recommend this lens for portraits.

This lens produces extremely sharp and tight pictures with almost no vignetting at all. The bokeh on this is very satisfying at 1.8. Just gorgeous! I would recommend pairing this with any of the a 7 series.

So light and great for art and portraits. The zeiss looks as clear and sharp as it can get. Paired this with my 135 f1.8 and I have everything I need. Love the price

Light. Excellent build. Sharp. Great for photo & video especially with nice cameras such as alfa 6500 or alfa 7 mac 3. Camera plus lens feels very well balanced. Definitely recommend it for sony camera fans.

This was probably the best lens purchase I've made for my A7ii. While it is a prime lens, it provides the best Bokeh I've seen and it's a low light monster with the f1.8. Recommended lens for any A7 series camera

This lens produces beautiful portraits. I've gotten some amazing pro-quality images from this lens. On my A7ii, it handles indoor lighting and even backlighting rather well. I can shoot facing a sunny window which results in a dreamy effect. My only qualm with this lens is when shooting multiple subjects. You have to be careful if one person is even a foot farther back because they'll be out of focus.

If you are here you have probably read other reviews on this lens. They are all true, the good ones. Although I do not usually shoot 50+mm Primes I very much enjoyed this lens. The detail and image quality this lens can produce are really something to behold. If you are in the market for a prime lens for your Sony device, this is worth every penny. It does not disappoint.

I have nothing but good things to say about this lens. If you are doing portrait photography this is a must have for your arsenal. It's super fast, and produces awesome bokkeh and clear/sharp photos.

Check out the rave reviews all over the internet. Lens is super sharp from f1.8 on and lightweight. Has the famous Zeiss pop and the IQ is fantastic. For the money you can’t do better.

If you had to knock this lens it's the 55mm focal length, it's just not the standard 50. Otherwise this is exceptional. Sharp, sharp, sharp, great colors and superb size. Buy it!
