Thought this was the best for the money. Many reviews talked about the picture freezing. I thought an update would take care of that if it happened. It happened, I updated, still happened. Picture good what it works. The other reason I got this unit was to play back my SACD and my DVD-A, for that its flawless!! I then picked up the Panasonic 820. Picture and control wise, it blows away the Sony.

I’m on my second unit. The first unit was occasionally unresponsive to both the remote and direct button presses and required unplugging to reset. The second one has been okay so far. Sound quality and image seem fine. I just hope it lasts.

Received the Sony UBP-X800M2 UHD player and it does the job that's expected for a 4K Blu-Ray disc player. No issues with installation and playing 4K movies, Blu-Ray movies, DVD movies, or even music CDs. No issues with HDR on movies and I haven't noticed any issues with Dolby Vision, except that you have to manually turn it on and off. That's a first world inconvenience, but not a dealbreaker. I stream the majority of my movies now, but having a quality disc player for movies that have already been bought is worth the investment.

Okay when not throwing an error or skipping

We've owned this for almost 2 years now and at this point it is just kind of OK. There are enough "wrong format" errors when inserting DVD, Blu-Ray, or 4K discs to be obnoxious. Ejecting the disc tray and closing it a few times normally resolves this issue. The same DVD and Blu-Ray discs work fine in other players, namely our PS4 and PS5. We've also encountered quite a bit of skipping, frame drops, and just outright picture loss. Again, does not happen with the same disc in other devices. When it does work the picture looks great. It's just a shame that every time we go to watch a movie there is a high probability of some error occurring when either trying to start the movie or during the movie.

This unit will play DVD's, Blu-Ray, HDR (4k Ultra) and CD's and from a USB device or network media server. The setup is easy and it can connect to your network via an ethernet cable or wireless. It also has Bluetooth and will connect to paired headphones or speakers! The volume control on the remote is not universal, and it will only connect to 14 of the main TV brands. It also has built-in apps for Amazon Prime Video, Netfix and YouTube

Locks up, not very responsive, *slow*.

I have the X800, not the X800M2. Mine boots slow, about 10 seconds minimum. Splash screen sits there a long time, and is in 480p. No option to upgrade the menu and splash screen to 1080p. Does not always recognize theres a disc in the tray at startup, I often must hit eject twice to get it to recognize the disc. Three times it has frozen up completely and wont even turn off, so I must unplug it. Takes forever just to turn off! I hit the button on the remote and it's 18 seconds later the LED is off. ***Wow.*** For the HDMI controls, its often overridden by the TV - I hit play, and my Yamaha reciever opts for the TV input (over fiber optic) rather than the higher bandwidth feed straight from the HDMI from the player. Annoying, but you may not get that if you use a 4k enabled amp (mine is 1080p compatible fed by the second HDMI output for audio). Menu is very slow to boot apps. Does not always remember the position you were at on a disc, so I must often navigate to the position I was at... I would definitely go with Panasonic if I had to do it again - never had issues like these with my Panasonic Blu-Ray player.

I waited for a while to buy this until it finally went on sale, it was worth the wait. It's a very solid unit, loads fast, the only negative is the remote could be a bit nicer considering the price of this unit.

    Disappointing

This model seems to have inherent flaws that are chronic and cannot be corrected by updates or settings. Frequently plays dvd with wrong aspect ratio. Slow response time to remote. Displays captions that cannot be turned off easily. Poor build quality. Drawer operation noisy. Definitely would not recommend or buy again. Avoid.

Hi Critic12, we are sorry to hear about the issues that you're experiencing with the Sony - UBP-X800M2. We understand how frustrating it can be not being able to enjoy the movies as you expect. In regards to the aspect ration of the DVDs you play, the Blu-ray player does have the option to select your screen format (aspect ratio), you simply need to go to, Settings > Screen settings > Screen format. Also it is worth noting that the aspect ratio settings of the TV, may also affect the source (Blu-ray), so we recommend checking this as well in your TV settings.
If you find that the response time is slow to the remote control, we recommend mainly to:
      - Reset your remote by taking the batteries out and pressing every button twice
      - Change the batteries for new ones
      - Power cycle the player by unplugging from the power and wait 2 min
In regards to the captions that cannot be turned off, if they are not turning off by pushing the "Subtitle" button on the remote, you may need to turn them off from the DVD menu, this is common in some old movies.
We appreciate your feedback on the quality of the product and noisy operation, this is something that will be sure to pass it along to our development team. If after doing the steps you still experience issues, you can contact our support team at: https://us.esupport.sony.com/support/s/support-contact?language=en_US&category=tv

Overheating issue kills a great player

There's not a tremendous amount of 4k UHD players our there, most are several years old as mfr's seem to have lost interest in the market. I bought my Sony UBP-X800M2 with my new TV years ago from BB. I enjoy watching 4k UHD movies but found out early on that if the movie lasts 1.5hrs or so, that often I start to have pauses/freezes in the movie or sound cuts out. This is a common occurrence with this player if you search. I've got the latest firmware M45.R.0058 from 5/30/2022 and does not help address a problem seemingly with hardware design that doesn't allow the player to stay cool. Other than that 1 annoying issue, which is significant if the freeze happens at a crucial point in the movie and why it gets 2 stars, it's a fine player for the price. I'm looking to move to a Panasonic because this one issue frustrates me.
