Your endgame Blu Ray player if you need one
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Incredible. I finally upgraded from using the built-in 4K BD functionality of the Xbox series of consoles. Microsoft refuses to update the Blu Ray player app and I was constantly dealing with discs not playing, and older dolby audio formats defaulting to basic 5.1. The worst part is it cannot do Dolby Vision for discs AT ALL. This player does everything. Dolby Vision. Dolby Atmos. DTS-X. Etc. All at the same time.

Great 4K Blu Ray player for the price
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sony X800M2 4k Bluray player is a very good player for less than $250 . It has has HDR10 and Dolby Vision. To get Dolby Vision you have to go back into settings but not a problem once you get used to doing this. The player also has streaming services for Netflix, prime video and YouTube. This player looks to be made better than Sony's previous model. All in all a very good player for a decent price

4K Blu-ray Done Right
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the first review I have written for any disc player, but this unit is the best I have seen. The Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray/DVD Player Playback speed is INCREDIBLE, even on busy action scenes (such as watching British Rugby fans 'argue' over victory)! No more blaming the TV refresh rate for being slow and making busy video choppy. Even busy 3D playback is smooth. When I first saw this thing on the Best Buy display shelf, I thought it was a multi-disc player for its width (17 inches), but it turns out to be full of tech and cooling space. Its size allows it to remain cooler than most units. Though energy-efficient, a 4K player is much busier than DVD or standard Blu-ray, and thus runs hotter, so staying cool is a must, and this unit does it (some older 4K units could almost warm a cup of coffee). Apart from the usual ethernet connection found in most newer players to connect to an internet router or home network, it also features Wi-Fi to connect to a Wi-Fi router (just 1-time select our router ID from a list and enter its password), which makes player software updates a breeze. It even has Bluetooth so I can connect my cushy Bluetooth noise-reduction headphones. It also features Netflix, Prime Video and even YouTube. A USB connector hidden behind a tethered slip-off panel below the power button lets us watch any-format video recorded on a thumb drive, external disc drive, digital camera/video, etc. The Setup menu is EXTENSIVELY detailed, allowing for Parental Control, enable Blu-ray Internet content, customized audio effects, flat display formats, 3D formats, 4p, Dolby Video, Deep Color, and this sleep-inducing list goes on, down to a Factory Reset option and personal information removal. But fortunately, there is an 'Easy Setup' option for the less tech-savvy among us, which does all the things us tech geeks normally pride ourselves on. We can even control it through the HDMI TV connection (I just like being able to turn the TV off and it shuts the player down). A second HDMI connector is available (plus an alternative Coaxial digital cable connector) for connecting sound bars or AV amplifiers. I am truly pleased with this player and have yet to encounter a problem. Being a retired A+ Certified Technician, I am normally hard to please.

Great 4k blu-ray player
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I upgraded from the Sony x700 and I am so happy I did. The build quality is so much better for only $50 more. I'm shocked and how cheap the x700 seems. I notice a defiant difference in the picture as well. The x700 looked great but I see a slightly better black/contrast and color than I did on the x700 especially with Dolby Vision. Alot of people doing the fact that you have to change the dolby vision setting but for me the extra 10 seconds doesnt matter. We also only watch movies and maybe stream Netflix so the lack of apps doesnt matter to me either. I think this is a great blu ray player especially for the price.

Excellent Unit Except for Upscaling
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is currently Sony's "top of the line" 4K UHD Blu-ray player and in all aspects, save one, it is an excellent player. Simple to set up and operate, this unit provides excellent audio & video playback on a 4K capable monitor. That said... This Sony player seems to have difficulty with upscaling standard DVD video to HD. Playing a standard DVD (Solaris) the video image was outstanding. Indeed, this disc has never looked better. And then, for no apparent reason, the player froze. In doing some research on-line we discovered that others have encountered this same issue. The upscaling overtaxes the player causing it to freeze. The solution -- turn off the upscaling capability. This can be accomplished in the system set-up menu. Once the upscaling was disabled the unit worked perfectly, and has continued to do so. Again, I am happy that I purchased this unit and am satisfied with its performance in all other aspects.

Pretty good 4k player
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been waiting a solid while before reviewing this 4k player and I've seen a fair number of movies to give it a true review. It's a solid player that does the job well. HOWEVER, some movies have frozen and became unplayable. Most of them, the fast and the furious 8 movie 4k set, were the disc themselves. The few that gave issues were resolved by simply fast forwarding a few seconds. Not a big deal for me. Aside from that, its been great and the picture looks amazing. I am super happy I got a proper 4k player and upgraded my my series x!

We really appreciate you mentioning the freezing issue. While we know any pause can be frustrating, it sounds like you managed those rare instances really well, and we're happy a quick fast-forward was all it took to resolve the few non-disc problems.

What a nice upgrade.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So far no complaints only praise. The only thing missing are the RCA out for older equipment. But hey.... It's almost 2021. Time for a a new Receiver or Amplifier. The 4k picture and enhancements are what I was looking for. The SACD and A audio were necessary for me. This package has it all. Including a Dolby picture.

Great player, good price
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had the previous version and worked perfect until Dolby Vision came and had to upgrade to this one, same quality as the expensive 4k Players, I tried other players like the XBox X but quality is poor and have problems with some movies and audio sync, this player is worth the price, don’t get the 700 version that not as good as this one.

Excellent 4K Blu Ray/SACD player
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My old Oppo Blu Ray/SACD player finally bit the dust and I needed a replacement and this Sony UBP-X800M2 player fit the bill nicely. 4K Blu Rays look and sound great and SACDs sound just as awesome as they did with the Oppo. Plus it's a nice graphics upgrade since the Oppo only supported 1080P. The UI is a little clunky and you have to switch Dolby Vision on and off manually as needed because it doesn't do it for you automatically, which is a minor annoyance. And speaking of minor annoyances, if you have a disk in the drive, every time you turn the player on, it takes a few seconds to recognize and initialize the disk before it will allow you to play it. Even if it's the same disk that was in there the last time you used it. But those annoyances aside, I can easily give this a five-star rating as the picture and sound quality are stellar for this price.

Posted .Hello Wayne,
Thank you for your detailed review of the Sony UBP-X800M2 player. We're glad to hear that you found the picture and sound quality to be outstanding and that the player has met your needs overall, especially with 4K Blu Ray and SACD performance.
We appreciate your feedback regarding the user interface and the manual switching for Dolby Vision. We understand that having to convert between these settings manually can be an inconvenience. Additionally, your point about the initialization time when a disc is in the drive is noted. Your experience helps us identify areas for future improvements.
Your review is valuable, and we're happy to know that the overall experience with the product earns a five-star rating from you despite the minor annoyances. Thank you for choosing Sony and for taking the time to share your feedback.

Maximizes What You Get From Your Physical Media
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this as an upgrade from the 4K Blu-Ray player in my PS5 and it is well worth the price. I can't speak on the streaming apps as I only use this for my physical 4K discs; but, this meets all of my needs and surpasses my expectations for what I use it for. It allows me to maximize the potential of my setup with the Dolby Vision and seamlessly passes through all of the audio details in my favorite films for my sound system. As others have stated, the only complaint I really have is the fact that it does not automatically detect if your disc is capable of Dolby Vision so you have to adjust that on your own from the settings for every movie; however, I knew this prior to purchasing so it doesn't bother me that much.

Works as described
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Easy to use. With the 4KHD TV, 18.1 HDMI cable, and this player, the 4K discs look and sound amazing. BluRay is amazing unto itself; it seems as if 4K has perhaps 2x the clarity of BR. Wasn't sure if the upgrade would be noticeable enough to warrant the effort and $, but it was definitely worth it.

Has Almost everything I wanted in UHD Blu Ray Play
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It works perfect with my Sony Z9D UHD 3D TV along with my Marantz SR7013 Receiver. I purchased this so I could utilize the Dolby Vision Capabilities of my TV. I wasn’t disappointed. It plays my Dolby Vision UHD BluRays perfectly and the picture is amazing. I was finally able to not only utilize Dolby Vision but also Dolby Atmos at the same time. Overall I’m very pleased with my purchase. There are two small things to note. Watching a movie with Dolby Vision requires the user to go into Setup and turn it on. Then in my case I have a 3D TV. You need to go back in to Setup and turn it back off to use your 3D. The other thing to note is the lack of supported Apps. You get NETFLIX, Prime Video and YouTube. That’s it! My other older Sony BluRay has more such as Slacker and Pandora. That’s why this wasn’t a deal breaker for me.

Great player for Audio & UHD
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this on sale for $239, and for that price it's amazing. I purchased the Sony because it supports SACD and DVD-Audio and I needed to 4K-UHD for BluRay. I also have an OPPO 4K BluRay that is not UHD and for the audio, this is just as good (I never use the discrete output of the OPPO - so it's all digital to digital comparison).

Works As Expected
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Good - I have watched already UHD movies and they ran perfectly fine. No Skipping or any problem. - It is nice that the remote volume can be used for a Sony TV volume. - Can be used for streaming. The Bad - The remote should have been much better. I also have a Sony TV which has a remote made of metal and feels luxurious. This remote seems like plastic and feels like a toy. A 30$ Fire TV Stick Remote feels better in the hand.

Very good picture, sound, and build quality
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my second purchase for this particular Sony Model. Since I've had and been using the first unit for more than a year and a half, I will largely base my review on the first unit, since both units are the same. Overall, this is a very nice machine with only a few very minor complaints. I'll state those later. When I removed the unit from the box, it was very noticed how well built it is due to its weight (8.4 lbs) This is a big contrast compared to the majority of disc players that may weigh a third or less of this unit. It's good to see that Sony took some time constructing this unit. Setting the unit up is fairly easy since there is only the hdmi cable to connect (in my setup). Depending on how others set the unit up more cables may be needed if a receiver, etc is used. When the machine is first turned on there is an auto setup feature to go through for language network etc. before a disc can be played There are many different options under settings for picture, sound, etc. More on that later. While playing a disc, picture and sound quality are very good to excellent. This unit does also have a few streaming apps. As there are only 3 (Netflix, Prime Video, Youtube) I don't recommend streaming on this if your smart tv or other streaming device has better smart functionality. This unit has Dolby Vision, but it has to be turned on and off manually, since there's no "auto" setting. The remote control is not of the best design physically, but it works the way it should. There is one thing that I do need to note. Some users have complained about this unit freezing or skipping while playing 4k discs. I haven't yet encountered this yet since most discs I have played were 1080P blurays and only a few 4ks. There is a youtube video that describes this issue and how to fix it. Under the picture settings, there is a setting for 4k upscale in this are three options: Auto 1, Auto 2 and Off. The video states to select Off. There is also another setting under picture called cinema conversion mode. This is supposed to be changed from "film" to "video". The youtube video states that changing these settings is supposed to help with the skipping/freezing issue. It's woth a try for those experiencing this problem. The only 4k machine that I would rank better than this unit is the Panasonic DP-UB820 since it has a few more features such as front panel display, HDR10+ and better function of Dolby Vision. It also is much more costly. Otherwise this si a very nice unit that is a very solid performer with disc playback and very good picture and sound quality.

Superb Blu ray player in 2022
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was skeptical about getting one at first but I check the reviews that others have and many of them were positive so I decided to buy one myself. Setup was not hard to do once i brought it home. I must say WOW it looks great when playing movies. DVD's and VCD's (yes this 4k Blu ray player does play VCD's for those who are wondering) were definitely upscaled for maximum quality as it can get. 4k movies are all great with this 4k Blu ray player. I guess the downside would be the price,no HDMI cable bundled with it and limited streaming service. So i hope Sony updates their streaming services on their 4k Blu ray players. So IF you can overlook the downsides then this is the 4k Blu ray player for you.

Excellent sound for the price.
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For a lower/mid tier soundbar, this product produces excellent sound. In the title I stated “Excellent sound for the price”. I purchased this with a Bravia 8 TV. Best Buy was having a Black Friday sale and offered it for half price when bundled with the TV. I don’t know if I’d purchase it at original MSRP. The sound itself is excellent. It has very good mid and higher range output. It could use a touch more bass, I will probably be purchasing an add on sub woofer to alleviate this slight shortcoming. Speech has exceptional clarity at all volumes unlike a cheaper Samsung sound bar that this replaced. The one thing that is lacking is there was no user manual and I don’t know and haven’t figured out if the there is a way to adjust the differing levels (treble, mid range, bass) of sound. One minor problem is that my TV occasionally arbitrarily switches from the sound bar to the TV’s speakers. I believe this is a problem with the TV’s programming.

Didn’t know what I was missing
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m all about optimizing my home theater experience. My previous LG 4K Blu-ray player provided what I thought was decent performance before demons surfaced. It’s difficult to find players that offer support for both Dolby vision and other hdr formats. It’s all a game of give and take, but this device ticked all the most important boxes. As far as performance, the image quality is absolutely stunning. I had no idea what I was missing over the LG. I’m an audio geek and have a banging 5.1.2 setup. The sound fidelity this player provides with movies and music is staggering compared to the previous device. Each time I watch a disc I see and hear things I didn’t know existed, especially with Dolby atmos and dtsx formats. I haven’t tried any of the streaming services or Bluetooth on this product. Only four stars because on three occasions it has frozen and skipped forward during disc playback.
