    previous version is better!

I had the previous version, UBP-X700 and in my opinion it is better than than the X800M2. The 700 is narrower, lighter and roughly the same height and depth. The 700 has a customizable dashboard, meaning you choose the apps you want to see. It has 10 or more apps to choose from. The 800 feels like it would be superior in quality since its metal and heavy but I didn't notice any difference in the processing power. The 800 only comes with 3 apps and you can't add any more. If I am paying $300 (with service plan) for a Blu-ray player I want to have more than 3 apps. Any $30-$50 Blu-ray player can play discs, to me it felt like I was paying the other $250+ for 3 apps. I'm sure there were hardware upgrades but they weren't noticeable to me. I have returned the Blu-ray player and upgraded my TV. I had a 50" plasma (can't beat it for action/sports) but it had no smart capabilities. All the apps I needed were on the new tv (LG OLED65CXPUA - highly recommend it, if you are in need of a new one), I'll go buy a cheap Blu-ray player in case I ever want to watch something on Blu-ray/DVD.

I bought this BluRay player vs the Sony model 700 as it was heavier, and had features the 700 did not have ( Bluetooth, more audio playback options, in addition to the 4K UHD DVD). I have had several other non BluRay & regular BluRay discs. All played better with greater resolution & color than the players we had used to play these discs. We had a SD Bruce Springsteen concert that had more vibrancy & depth, not to mention better sound. I highly recommend this player.

It's a 4K Blu-ray player. If that's all you care about, and don't care if you have to manually turn on Dolby Vision for each movie and turn it back off for non-DV movies, then it's a good value. If you want the best bang for your buck with image quality, go with the Panasonic UB-820. It's better in every way, and has tone mapping to put out a better looking image. When it's on sale for $400, it's absolutely a steal over the X800M2

Hi iLiekTech, thank you so much for taking the time to write your review, the Sony - UBP-X800M2 has been designed to enjoy the best picture quality in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and 4K detail for everything you watch thanks to 4K upscaling. In regards to the Dolby vision option that you manually have to turn it on, we’ll be sure to pass this along for improvement. Your insights mean a lot to us as it helps improve our products. Thank you for choosing Sony. Regards, - Dominick Sony_US

If all you want to do is play DVD's/blueray this is a great system - the tv automatically recognizes the output so its all pretty seamless. I also wanted to hook it up to my receiver so that it could play Audio CDs, and this is NOT seamless. It only supports HDMI out and most receivers (in the low/mid price point range) only support RCA connectors in. I tried installing an RCA to HDMI converter but no luck. So now I have this beautiful DVD/CD player that only plays DVDs :-(

Bought it as an open box and saved some money. Great quality and plays every DVD/Blu ray without any issues. Streaming works great as well just wish you could add more apps. The UI is very simple but probably could use a facelift. Has issues with Bose headphones..the audio doesn't come through very well very choppy. But every other Bluetooth speaker I tried worked perfectly. Hopefully a future update will correct the Bose issue.
