I purchased this Blu-ray player to replace an earlier model of the same player that died after 3 years. I sure hope this one lasts longer. The on-screen interface is more streamlined with this model and all operations seem smoother. The image quality of both my Blu-ray's and 4K Blu-rays is superb.

I bought this to replace a 10-year-old samsung that was freezing at times while streaming. thought a new one with an updated processor might be better. well, this one doesnt freeze, it hardly does anything. it played amazon prime one night then the next would not fire up. once started, it defaults to netflix and nothing will stop it. try to go to home screen and nothing. none of the buttons do anything. shut it off, reboot, and still nothing. will not play thumb drives as it will not even show them as there is no home screen. I have a cheap 60-dollar unit I hooked up and it does exactly what it is supposed to, unlike the 229 dollar one. I had bought 2 of these, 1 for the main media room and 1 for the bedroom and will be returning both.

Plugged it in, ran a cable to my Yamaha processor, put in a 4K disc and enjoyed the movie. I already had expectations for the visual experience I would receive and was still pleasantly surprised by the clarity from this player. My only complaint is that it isn't a Yamaha unit as everything else in my equipment stacks is Yamaha. (Not much of a complaint is it...)

Our research showed that the highest-rated Blu-Ray player, so we bought it to replace a previous player that had ceased to play DVD’s. The set-up was easy, and it works. We were able to configure it into our Harmony1 (earliest model?) universal controller. What more can you ask for, except that it last longer than our previous DVD player? Only time will tell.

Many think all digital players play about the same, they either work or they don’t. Not so. The Sony UBP-X800M2 really does provide a better picture and better sound than the cheaper players. It’s not just the added features. If you have an HDR TV, you really need an HDR Player or you left money on the table when you bought that TV. This player will help you get more performance and enjoyment from your discs, TV, and speakers. With lesser players, you just are not getting what you paid for. This 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Dolby vision can produce more colors and calls for brighter screens. I revisited several DVD, Blu-ray, 3D, 4K, and 4K Digital Vision movies I have watched before and know well. With Dolby Vision the colors are deeper, brighter, and more plentiful while the blacks became much blacker, even on a LCD screen. The picture is more vivid, there is more detail, far more contrast/range, all which makes it looks more lifelike, sometimes there is a bit of almost 3D depth to movies, even though they are not 3D. With the dimly lit night scenes showing more detail, I’m curious to watch the last GOT night battle on disc and see how much magic can be wrung from that scene. The player does a very good job at upscaling lesser non-4K discs. So good that I don’t feel a need to replace some favorite movies I have on Blu-ray for their 4k version. This feature alone mitigates the extra cost of this player. While Dolby Vision works very well, amazing really on discs that support it, you must go into the menus to toggle if off manually for discs that do not support it. If you play a disc that does not support Dolby Vision, such as a 3D disc, you will know it as the picture will be much brighter than normal and the colors will be off. It seems none of the Sony players do this automatically. If it’s not possible to auto-detect Dolby Vision, then there should be a button on the remote to easily toggle it. Hopefully Sony makes some improvements here with a firmware upgrade. This is my only real gripe with this player. Supporting Dolby Atmos3D and DTS:X object-based surround sound, the sound from movies, music and games is amazing with a surround sound system. You really feel like you’re in the scene. It can be positively creepy yet amazing when you hear what seems to someone coming up behind you when you are alone. When you first power up, you will need to configure Internet access, either wired or wireless to update the software before you can use the three streaming apps included; Amazon, Netflix, and YouTube. No Hulu, not even Crackle, which Sony still has a minor interest in last I read. The streaming choices are few and there is no ‘app store’ to go get others. Your TV likely has more services built in. Streaming from all platforms was smooth and looked very good. Netflix and Prime both have some Dolby Vision content. Going through the menus seemed a bit slower than on my Roku Ultra though. There were a few minor lags going through the menus and waiting for pictures to load that I don’t normally experience on the Roku, but nothing terrible. Most will not likely find bothersome. I am surprised Vudu is not one of the included apps as those with digital movies can use Vudu which also support Dolby Vision. This is an excellent DISC PLAYER with some streaming capabilities, and I am just fine with that. I would rather have the money I spend on a disc player go into making its primary function, playing discs, be as good as possible. One can purchase the top Roku or Amazon Fire TV for under $100 and have a superior streaming device with far more choices, updates, and performance than one could ever hope to get from a disc player, TV, or other multi-purpose device. Connecting this player to my component stereo for some audio listening took some doing, as there are no RCA jacks to use this as a CD player with my older stereo components. Using the players second HDMI through an AV receiver allowed output through a tape loops output to my stereo receiver. One could also use a Bluetooth to headphone/RCA adapter in such a situation, which is relatively cheap, but may limit the audio quality. If you plan to use this player as a disc player through RCA jacks all the time, the best option would be to step up to an ES series player which offers RCA jacks, as well as Coax SPDIF digital outputs. However, this will add a few hundred to the price. I listed to a number of audio CD’s including some Telarc CD’s and SACD discs, the player has a 24/96 DAC. The sound stage was expansive, sound was clear, the bass was well defined, just perhaps just a bit brighter than I am used to. A slight adjustment on the EQ and all was good. Generally the music sounded at least as good or better as they do on other much more expensive CD only players I have used over the years. This is likely due to the DSEE HX upscaling the frequency and dynamic range to near high-resolution quality. A few discs had their high end sound a bit exaggerated. One reason for the great video and audio performance is that this player is much heavier than typical Blu-Ray players, it weighs over 8½ pounds. Sony states the solid chassis helps prevent micro vibrations, which will help the laser track better and thus supply a steady stream of data with less error correction thrown in. That and the superb circuitry do result in stunning video and sound from this player. The player is solid and has the excellent build quality one comes to expect from Sony’s best products. Disc play is very quiet, even when skipping chapters, going back or forward. The player has a minimalist clean appearance that works with Sony’s other products. The remote is typical Sony, you either like it or not. It has a strong signal and functions well. There are many features that provide a range of configuration options. Such as the options for connecting to a home network. The Ethernet supports 10/100 Mbps, more than enough for streaming. Both 2.4 and 5GHz bands are supported and the player has dual-band MIMO technology to ensure a strong and reliable connection. A connection speed that can exceed the speed of the wired connection if ones Wi-Fi supports it. The player supports Bluetooth TX, LDAC. The Bluetooth provides many useful options. • A Bluetooth speaker for clearer sound than what some TV’s rear or bottom speakers provide. • Easy connection to sound bars, stereo speakers, receivers, and stereo adapters that support Bluetooth. • Using headphones for private listening without disturbing others. • Those hard of hearing can listen using hearing aids that support Bluetooth, or headphones with the volume level they need. • Bluetooth with HDMI sound is also an option for combining any Bluetooth option with sound to your TV or AV receiver. There is one USB port on the front behind a pull off cover to watch the occasional home movie. Leaving a drive full of movies plugged in would clutter the clean lines. There is no side or rear USB port to leave a drive cleanly hooked up. However, one can easily access movies from a PC or SAN over a home network from the players menu. There are two HDMI ports, the second HDMI is for audio only. A shame. It would have been nice if one could plug the player directly to the TV for kid’s movies and another to an AV Receiver for surround sound, or displaying on two TV’s at once. But those with a projector will likely find this useful one HDMI can feed the projector with a video signal while the audio HDMI feed sound into an AV Receiver. Overall this is a solid quality player with excellent specs. There is allot to like here at a reasonable price. You will get the fantastic picture you paid for with any HDR TV and improve the play of your less than 4K disks making this a real bargain. The player also supports Sony’s Bravia Sync, so it’s really a no brainer for Sony owners.
