Customers are saying

Customers often highlight the outstanding picture quality, frequently praising its 4K capabilities, Dolby Vision support, and effective upscaling. They also appreciate its ease of use and good value. However, some customers express concerns regarding its reliability and the fact that it is not a streaming device. Other minor drawbacks include the absence of a display and its slightly larger size.

So far, so good! I love how the UBP-X800M2 player interfaces with my Sony A80J OLED TV. The installation and setup was simple. My 4K/Blu-ray DVDs that would fail to play on my other player plays flawlessly on this player. So far, so good!

    HDR10

Bought this player since it can decode HDR10 format. I have the older x800 4K player and I have two 75” Samsung Q9FN TVs and you can really see the difference in HDR10 format. But not all 4K movies have HDR10 format (very few). Thought about returning it due to this but I got it at a good price on Black Friday ($200).

Great, except you have to manually switch between Dolby Vision and not Dolby Vision, and this requires looking at the movie case to see if it is a Dolby Vision movie.

Good player at upscaling video images. DVD sound quality is good through hdmi output. Mediocre if used as CD transport via digital Coax output with thin sound and lacking details. The Sony X700 offers almost the same quality/features as the 800 for less money.

Looks great, does Atmos, dtsx, and HDR. Hidden USB port for more flexibility. Takes longer than it should to boot up, wonky remote reception, severely lacks apps. If you want it for just an extremely capable UHD player with a USB port, this is it. If you don’t want to get a Roku or Fire Stick, etc. this will not fit your needs.

Not that bad a player. I got this because I have DVD-Audios and some SACDs. Other than the OPPOs not to many 4K Blu-Ray players offer these formats. I don't care about streaming, this is strictly for discs of all formats.

I needed a universal player and the Sony was the best solution—and not too expensive at that. Heavy, rugged, responsive and works well with my DAC.

    Freezes Up!

I’ve had this since July to replace another Sony that would freeze up from time to time. Now this one is doing the same thing. Doesn’t really matter if it’s a 4K, Blu-ray or DVD…it will at some point freeze up. At first I thought it was because the disks must be dirty, but on many occasions it’s a brand new disc that doesn’t have any smudges or even a speck of dust on it. Pretty disappointed with Sony players as of late.

Solid well built. Quiet and quick disc loading and spinning. Good picture . Really disappointed in the continued lack of auto Dolby vision a really inconsiderate and cumbersome feature. Also the sparse streaming apps compared to past sony players. For those looking for a one player fits all. And lastly the lack of atmos on Netflix and prim compared to other players and streamers. Based on the lack of the above features I would not recommend this unit until Sony addresses these features especially the auto Dolby vision function

Works flawlessly, quiet, and fast. As others have said the software on the Sony DVD players is different than what is on the Sony TV itself. The TV software has more options and is updated faster.
