Great UHD player with DVD-A and SACD capability

    Posted .

I wanted to see UHD video with UHD audio and this allows that and more. It seems to be a sturdy build and has a bit of heft. it is VERY fast to load disc, I was surprised by that. I've watched 3 titles, all rentals, with Dolby Vision HDR and all 3 played with no issues. The Picture was really great AND the HD audio (7.1 TrueHD) can't be matched via streaming. Of course, it would have handled any DTS HD MA video too. The streaming apps work but I didn't buy the player for those. The player found my media-server and plays (my music) files there fine. Also plays from USB. I do own DVD-A and SACD so am happy to have a modern player to utilize them now and for the life of the new machine. The manual Dolby Vision switching required me to add an "On / Off" sequences to my Harmony remote and is a non-issue to me. (this does require lookups in Blu-ray.com to determine if a DV disc or not)

The Sony 800M2 player combines ease of use, high quality audio and video, and all your commonly used streaming apps into one package. Setup is a you would expect. The remote is simple to use. And where this unit really shines is on the performance. Video is beautiful, with amazing clarity and color saturation, black levels look great, and the entire experience feels so much more immersive than traditional Blu-ray. Audio quality is outstanding, When a device this advanced works well, it seems like magic - it just does what you expect and more, without fuss or trouble. Sony has easily hit this mark. An excellent unit, highly recommended.

    UBP-X800M2 - Supports SACD/4K/Blu-ray/DVD

I picked up the UBP-X800M2 by SONY, because I wanted a 4K/Blu-ray player that also played both SACDs and DVD-Audio. This SONY model does the trick and at a very low price ($200-300 depending on whether you get it on sale). These days, unless you want to spend over $1,000 on a player, you pretty much need to get this one or the next step up by SONY (which is around $500-600) if you want to play SACDs. If you’re looking for a lower cost option, this is the one you want.

    Awesome Player

This player is well built. It actually looks like an audio/visual component unlike the other plastic things out there. Disc playback and audio are amazing. I did not buy this player to stream but to watch discs so I really do not care if it has three streaming services or ten. Buy a disc, the quality will always be better and then you have it forever. My only complaint, it needs a display but this has become a problem for all manufacturers.

The Sony UBP-X800M2 is a solidly constructed unit. I'd like to start off by saying that it's been a long time coming for Sony to rethink their GUI and overall, the changes are a welcomed improvement. The color palette, icon arrangement and overall organization of on-screen information is dramatically better than it's predecessor and the competition - in the sub-500 dollar price category. Some people don't take notice of such things but personally, a good GUI presentation is an important part of the overall product experience and I place a high value on that kind of stuff if married with a good execution on the hardware side of things. Unfortunately there are glaring omissions in the streaming service options upon it's initial release - but hopefully Sony is planning on opening things up with a soon-to-be-released firmware update. Prime video, Netflix and YouTube are the only streaming apps available on set up. That's it - a total of three! Where's Pandora? Where's Hulu? It really makes no sense in light of all the other positive things to be said about this Mark 2 release. Moving on to overall performance and setup, I've demo'd the two 4K movies that accompanied the player. In addition to these two bonus discs, I focused on some widescreen DVD material and the 4K release of 'Fury', which is a good benchmark film to check things like dynamic range and shadow content. I also watched a few of the 'Avenger' films on Blu-ray. Via my LG OLED display, all material looked fantastic and the upscaling performance of the Blu-ray movies I viewed looked as good as most every other Blu-ray player I've owned or tried - with exception of final gen Oppo's and the new Panasonic - which is 4 times the price. Setup was smooth, easy and quick. I had the Sony UBP-X800M2 linked to my home WiFi without a hitch and the connection quality is solid. A new firmware was available and the process to install it was simple and before long I was loading discs & enjoying brilliantly fast load-up and chapter queuing. In terms of overall performance, the Mark 2 is markedly quicker in start up - even with the quick start up mode disabled - and system navigation through menus and disc playback is phenomenal when compared to Sony's first version of this player - which I did own for a very short period of time before returning. The front panel is clean and uncluttered without any type of display - which is a testament to the new software and all the on-screen display functionality - and the mechanism is quiet and smooth in operation. I'm all for the more stealthy look! I dinged Sony one star because of the streaming app fiasco but give this player an otherwise SOLID 4 Stars on movie playback performance for all disc-based material and for the dramatic improvements to the GUI/software design. I can fully recommend this player despite the 'current' streaming app deficiencies.

I like that this player is heavy, as a result, no more vibration, no more noise. The player is very responsive, the fastest I'd say. Picture quality is top notch. Did a very good job upscaling DVD too. Excellent audio. Support many formats. Easy to setup. No problem updating firmware. 2 things I don't like; 1. only has 3 streaming services (Netflix, Amazon prime, You Tube) and no way to add more. Hopefully this can be fixed by firmware. 2. Remote is not lighted.

The Sony UBP-X800M2 UHD player has all the bases covered. If you have a shiny disc, this unit will play it. CD, DVD-Vidoe, Blu-Ray, Ultra 4k, DVD-Audio, and SACD, all work great. It seems to read-in the discs is much faster than other players I've tried, which is nice. I tried dozens of different discs and it played every one without any issues. Which is a first for any disc player that I've ever owned. If you have a TV that supports all the latest features and standards this is definitely the player for you. Ultra 4k video, all current HDR standards, and wide color gamut are all supported. Even 3D discs if you have any of those (I don't so can't comment on that). 4k streaming from Netflix works great, too! Watching a 4k Blu-Ray encoded with Dolby Vision is incredible! By far the best picture quality I've seen on my TV. Also, this Sony unit seems built for the long haul. It's heavy and looks and feels like a premium product. Even though it's not inexpensive it is worth every penny and then some. Highly recommended.

    Sony-s a Brand Name I Trust

This is a very nice 4K Blu-Ray Player. Purchased one like this some 4 years ago for the TV in the bedroom Works great. Finally, after 12-13 years, my standard Sony Blu-Ray player, in the living room would only play regular DVD's. Would no longer recognize a Blu-Ray Disc, but after a couple of thousand movies or so things don't last forever. Since being 12-13 years of age, but could be a simple fix, it wasn't worth getting it looked at and since it was around Black Friday, Best Buy had this one on sale. Couldn't turn it down. Would have purchased it anyway even it wasn't on sale. Sony brands are excellent products. My TV's are Sony as well along with some stereo equipment. Sony's a name I trust.

This unit gets really good reviews, and it is working very well for me. I attached this to my computer's 4k display and the picture was perfect. I had been hesitant to grant 4k as being worth it, but Dune in 4k is beautiful. Notably better than just HD. I look forward to getting to use more of its features.

Great 4K Blu-Ray Player with some drawbacks

Overall, this is a great 4K Blu-Ray player. It's the quality you would expect from Sony. Having had a Sony Blu-Ray player (non-4K) that is not that old, the interface is a significant improvement. If you have 4K Blu-Ray Discs, it does support HDR and the movies look and sound great when paired with a 4K TV as well as the right HDMI cable. Mine came bundled with two 4K Blu-Rays, which is a nice touch given the price. It also comes with Netflix (the shortcut button on the remote is a nice touch), Amazon Prime VIdeo, and YouTube. It would have been nice to have more streaming options - so it's basically an enhancement to your home theater setup and not a replacement for other devices - you will still need another smart or streaming device that has a wider range of apps. The fact that it's upgradeable via software update may allow for additional apps to be added in the future though. It also has has an "instant-on" feature, and it does turn on very quickly when this is enabled. The only major issue I had was with the size. It is easily 2.5x the size of a comparable Sony Blu-Ray player and I had trouble fitting it into the cabinet that's connected to my TV. Other than that though, it's a great product and I highly recommend it - as long as you have the space for it.

    Minor Improvement

I own the first generation UBP-X800 and was happy to see that the M2(second gen) X800 had Dolby Vision(DV) built right in. My bedroom TV is a 4K HDR Sony but it doesn't have DV, and I thought this new edition UHD player would solve that for viewing DV UHD discs. I set up everything properly and put in Aquaman (2019) to see how well it worked. Well, I think it only marginally improved the movie. I did notice better contrast and brighter hot spots but overall, I wasn't overly impressed. Its very possible I overlooked a key setting but I went through both the M2 and TV settings several times just to make sure. One other thing that has changed with the M2 is that the ability to watch your favorite streaming apps has been reduced drastically. It offers up YouTube, Netflix and Prime. That's it. No option to add additional apps like Vudu, Hulu... Not sure why but it was disappointing to see. Overall its a very nice UHD player but I'm not so sure the addition of DV onboard was worth upgrading from the 1st gen model. If you don't currently have a UHD player, this new version should serve you well enough but anyone looking to upgrade from the previous model, research it a bit more to see.

This 4K Blu-Ray player really is an all-in-one device. Not only am I able to play my 4K discs on it, but I can browse through the native YouTube & Netflix apps, and stream my music via Bluetooth. While these features are really nice to have, the video options are the focal point. This model provides extremely crisp 4K playback, but add HDR on top of that and Dolby Vision, and you have all the viewing pleasure you could ever want. Colors now seem to be more vivid and flow seamlessly as compared to the previous model. I also like the updated menu. For me it’s simple and minimalistic. It’s just straight to the point, and I really enjoy that. I really can’t say anything bad about this UHD 4K player. It meets all of my needs, performs extremely well, looks beautiful, and it’s easy to use. How can anyone complain about that?

I got the player 2 days ago hooked it up . it has the same issue that last years ubp 700 player has . you have to switch dolby vision manually even in Bravia mode on the player just allows the player to do HDR 10 , it would have been nice if it had switched from hdr to dolby vision automatically and the streaming service just has 3 apps im sure they will add more later on the player is sturdy built like the ubp x800 good picture and sound processing maybe a deal breaker for some though .im ok with that

This player has really impressed me. We recently upgraded our TV and have been on the lookout for a 4K video source to take full advantage of our new display. This player fit the bill! Let me hit on some of the things I particularly enjoy: Instant on - as soon as you press the power button on the remote the TV is on and at the root menu of the player. No boot-up sequences, no loading ads, just on. If you hit the "Netflix" button on your remote it boots directly into Netflix and you don't even see the root menu. Image up scaling - When viewing a standard HD signal, like a standard Blu-ray or standard Netflix, it really does an amazing job. The image is crisp and is makes every movie we've watched look better than than when watching them on other devices or players Video processing - When watching UHD video that supports HDR processing they look absolutely breathtaking. My wife and I both have commented "I swear that looked better at home versus when we saw that in theaters!" The colors are bright and vibrant. Motion is smooth. Contrast is rich. Speaking of contrast, we have noticed scenes that have looked dark in movies previously are actually watchable now, no more "what happened in that scene" type comments. Satisfyingly laid out remote - It's a no frills kind of thing. Just the essentials and some extras in a useful arrangement. This might seem minor, but dealing with more convoluted layouts will make you feel thankful for this thoughtful design. No to mention how well it fits in the hand. Really well done all around. Snappy app response - When you want to hop out of YouTube and back into Netflix there are no waiting times. We previously would use our PS4 for a lot of media consumption. But there are so many delays of closing one app and loading another, "Oh you are at the media section, time to make you wait while we load ads." From now on we are using the player for those items, it's just so nice to be instantly on and already watching a movie or video in less than 5 seconds. If it isn't obvious yet, I LOVE this player. It is totally worth it.

Worked well for 2 years great picture and no issues, aside from a hiccup on the Starship Troopers 4k where it would freeze and skip about 10 seconds. Funny because ST is a partial Sony film. Two days ago it froze mid movie and wouldn't reload the disc. Now it won't recognize any 4k, Blu-ray or DVDs. Sony's suggestions were completely useless, "Unplug for a minute, make sure the format is supported, make sure your discs are clean!" I keep my discs in immaculate condition so that isn't the problem as none of them have smudges or scratches. System software was current, even tried factory reset with no luck. Lifelong Sony fan, (my PS4, PS3 and PS2 still work) but this was just disappointing that it gave up. Multiple reviews note the Sony 4k players have freezing issues but everyone looks past it because "Dolby Vision" (highly overrated). But hey, when the replacement drives cost $60 I guess you can't expect too much.

Honestly, in comparison to most Blu Ray players this wide and heavy... But that's just the quality of a premium devices build. Like furniture when something is sturdy and heavy it usually is a sign of a quality product. I also have the smaller ubp 700 which is smaller and lighter but looks more plastic and less premium. The one thing I don't like about it is that you get no screen. It plays Hi res audio, 4k HDR, the USB connection is on the bottom right. It supports eARC so connecting is easy. In my opinion, it's the best UHD 4k players out.
