I waited for a while to buy this until it finally went on sale, it was worth the wait. It's a very solid unit, loads fast, the only negative is the remote could be a bit nicer considering the price of this unit.

Overheating issue kills a great player

There's not a tremendous amount of 4k UHD players our there, most are several years old as mfr's seem to have lost interest in the market. I bought my Sony UBP-X800M2 with my new TV years ago from BB. I enjoy watching 4k UHD movies but found out early on that if the movie lasts 1.5hrs or so, that often I start to have pauses/freezes in the movie or sound cuts out. This is a common occurrence with this player if you search. I've got the latest firmware M45.R.0058 from 5/30/2022 and does not help address a problem seemingly with hardware design that doesn't allow the player to stay cool. Other than that 1 annoying issue, which is significant if the freeze happens at a crucial point in the movie and why it gets 2 stars, it's a fine player for the price. I'm looking to move to a Panasonic because this one issue frustrates me.

I have two of this model. Love this TV. Great color and with the Sonos Beam the sound is like a movie theatre.

Disappointing

This model seems to have inherent flaws that are chronic and cannot be corrected by updates or settings. Frequently plays dvd with wrong aspect ratio. Slow response time to remote. Displays captions that cannot be turned off easily. Poor build quality. Drawer operation noisy. Definitely would not recommend or buy again. Avoid.

Brand response from SonyListens
Posted .
Hi Critic12, we are sorry to hear about the issues that you're experiencing with the Sony - UBP-X800M2. We understand how frustrating it can be not being able to enjoy the movies as you expect. In regards to the aspect ration of the DVDs you play, the Blu-ray player does have the option to select your screen format (aspect ratio), you simply need to go to, Settings > Screen settings > Screen format. Also it is worth noting that the aspect ratio settings of the TV, may also affect the source (Blu-ray), so we recommend checking this as well in your TV settings. If you find that the response time is slow to the remote control, we recommend mainly to: - Reset your remote by taking the batteries out and pressing every button twice - Change the batteries for new ones - Power cycle the player by unplugging from the power and wait 2 min In regards to the captions that cannot be turned off, if they are not turning off by pushing the "Subtitle" button on the remote, you may need to turn them off from the DVD menu, this is common in some old movies. We appreciate your feedback on the quality of the product and noisy operation, this is something that will be sure to pass it along to our development team. If after doing the steps you still experience issues, you can contact our support team at: https://us.esupport.sony.com/support/s/support-contact?language=en_US&category=tv Regards, -Dominick

Poor Open Box Review

This is a Best Buy review more so then the player. You see I could not use the player as it was missing the remote. Here is the story. Bought an excellent condition open box which is supped to have all the equipment but maybe missing paper. Once it arrived I opened it excited to give it a try. Poorly packaged and missing the remote. I decided to take it back to the local store since you need the remote to operate this model. Took it back to Peoria IL store then went to the electronics department to look at what they could do for me. When I explained the situation to the worker and asked him if they could help me with a discount on the new model for my problems he said we did help you we gave you your money back. I said well the issue was BB sold me an excellent condition player without a remote so by definition on your site it was not in excellent condition. Then I was required to drive 40 miles to return an item that was not as promised and your answer is that you allowed me to return the product. He said “yes”. As I walked away I said this is a terrible way to treat a customer after your company made an error. Interestingly I checked on another open box online and there was one in open box excellent condition at Peoria IL store. Same place I took my excellent condition pieces missing player. Wonder if they put a remote in it or just recreated the same problem for the next customer. What has happened to you Best Buy?

Initially, I was extremely pleased with this player. It has had very light usage since purchased. Sony has always had a good reputation for their products. Well, no longer with me. Initially, the unit would not power on with the remote. Then, it would only open and close the tray. Finally got it to do a firmware update still could not play a dvd. Now, it will not power on, with either remote or unit power button. Seems there is a consistent problem with these units in logic board. 15 cent diode goes out and Tessa $300 unit. I’m done with Sony and will pick up another mfg unit to replace this with. Yep, real disappointed.

Just threw this player away. It attempted a software update and died. Sony support says it can’t be repaired. The previous Sony blu ray I had overheated and died. Don’t Waste your money on Sony. Will probably buy a Panasonic replacement. Site will not let me give zero stars.

UBX800 4k up dates kill it. planned obsolescence

I wish I could say this is a great unit, when it worked it was a very good unit, picture sound top notch. (Had it for about year and a half).
The first couple of up dates went okay but started freezing up had to unplug to get out of what ever loop it was in, Happened when I was steaming Netflix or amazon, but then the last up date killed it.
Would freeze up two three time in 15 min (had to unplug), while streaming, then the sound on the blu-ray or the 4k went, I finally gave up.
I had read reviews from poeple (when I first purchase) who had these issues but I thought Sony would have work out these issues and it would be okay to purchase the unit, no such luck.
I have read recent (12-28-22) reviews from people who are still are having the same problems and Sony still has not resolved these issues.
Whats up Sony, planned obsolescence?

Absolute JUNK

WARNING!!!!!! --- DO NOT BUY the Sony UBP-X800M2 !!!! Their website help forum is LOADED with people whose machines freeze up constantly. I purchased one at BestBuy 2 days ago, and it won't play ANY Blu-ray disk without locking up!! The crappy machine won't even eject the disk. You have to unplug from the wall and reset just to get the disk out. I've tried about 8 discs so far. I wish I had read the forums before purchasing, because this is a COMMON OCCURRENCE. SONY MAKES JUNK!!!!!!!!!!! I'll be returning mine to the store this evening.
