Perfect for watching all my physical movies!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great quality player! Heavy construction & reliable. I do have freezing issues on certain 4k disks, but no very often. Dolby Vision has to be turned off/on manually, but definitely not a deal breaker. Works great with older av receiver as well as it has built-in sound decoding. Hooked up to a Sony X93L 65" tv I noticed a big difference in picture quality vs streaming!

Great 4K Dolby Vision player from Sony!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Sony has released a capable, yet simple Blu Ray 4K player capable of decoding both HDR and Dolby Vision encoded discs. I also have a Panasonic DP-UB420 and while that player offers a much wider array of features--it does cost a bit more. I have only had one or two discs freeze up (my Panasonic 420 has done this as well) so far. The Sony is capable of streaming in 4K (if you have the bandwidth to support it). The remote is fairly well laid out (though it should be backlit)! The Panasonic remote is complicated and has the Netflix button located dead center (causing the app to load)! I have tried multiple movie files and this Sony is able to play them flawlessly!

Great build quality,
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great build quality. Nice finish and design. Got 2 on sale for $199 ($50 less than UBP-X700 which is much lighter and attracts scratches ridiculously easily). The UBP-X800M2 includes DVD-Audio support. Both the 700 and 800M2 include SACD support. I have only 1 DVD-Audio disc, but have 5 SACDs. Great player which is easy to set up. Video and audio are great. It has dual / 2 HDMI outputs (useful for anyone with an AV receiver that does not support 4K but has a 4K TV). My receiver does not have 4K capability but my TV does, so I hook the X800M2's video output directly to my 4K XBR77A9G. TV and use the other HDMI out for the audio to get surround sound from my receiver. Only cons are: 1) Lack of a front panel display (only a small round green indicator light to indicate if power is on or off). 2) Lack of apps - only supports 3 - Netflix, Prime and YouTube, While these are the most popular, Hulu and others are lacking. Ironically the cheaper UBP-X700 does support Hulu etc., but I still prefer the 800M2.

Excellent picture quality, with solid loading.
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Worth the money with noticeable picture quality upgrade over Xbox consoles. Dolby Vision is a plus with reasonable decent load times. This is my first purchased dedicated BR player since 2010 when 3D BR was a thing. Previous BRP was a Sony player which was an upgrade over the PS3 at the time. Dolby Vision is a game changer on certain movies and Netflix shows with 70 mbps HVEC encoding. I rewatched multiple 4K movies on this player. Xbox consoles are not bad, but there's a noticeable uptick in PQ on this player. Cons: Two of them, minor, but you should know. 1st is the limited streaming apps with no way to add additional apps. I would love Hulu and Vudu at the very least. Last issue is audio actually. My Xbox Dolby Atmos sounds better. When I check the info, the player says Dolby True Audio, my receiver says Dolby Atmos. It doesn't sound the same, Xbox 1X sounds better, same with the XSX. I have to turn it up louder to match the consoles audio by maybe 20%. Not a big deal, but instead of keeping my receiver at 16, I have to go up to 20-24 to get the same loudness. It's not big enough to remove a star, if I didn't have my Xbox to compare, it wouldn't be a problem. So I don't know if this player is doing proper Dolby Atmos.

Where is the Streaming?
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am an avid Sony fan and buyer of their televisions and blue ray products. In fact, 5 out of my 6 televisions are made by Sony, and the 2 blue ray disc players that I have are also Sony's. In fact, my review is a little delayed because I have just returned from a 21 day trip to Japan, the home of Sony, and had to install and analyze this Sony UBP-X800M2 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Player. Picture quality and audio are good, but I personally do not think that that is more important than the ability to be able to stream whatever a user wishes to stream. Wait for a better option. I must say that I requested this product because I have (3) 4k Ultra HD TV's and (1) 4K television: the Sony XBR55X850D 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart TV (2016 model), the Sony XBR70X850B 70" 4K, and the Sony XBR43X800E 4K HDR Ultra. So, this particular blu ray disc player is a much larger and heavier model than all our other players. I attribute this to a better, more perfect construction in order to produce not only a better picture, but sound quality. Before I installed and used this player to watch the Spiderman movie, one of the 2 a 4k ultra HD movies that Sony provided us to make sure that we were able to review content meant for this player. So, before I started my installation and review, I scanned some of the other reviews at the Best Buy website-the good, the bad, and the ugly. I saw some reviewers had negative comments on being unable to load various streaming services that we currently subscribe to. Therefore, I had my son assist me with the installation and setup, too, since I knew that there were some potential issues. The good-the setup and the installation is easy peasy, virtually no effort at all. I have included 2 pictures of what I thought was important. One is the box that it comes in and its contents and the other is the screen view. So, this player has presets for Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTube. Those easily loaded with our account information-we have an account with Netflix, are Prime members, and YouTube users. However, we also subscribe to Hulu and could not figure out how to add this. If you look at the picture of the screen shot on the television, the red toolbox icon, all the way on the right side, this icon represents "settings". We did not see anywhere in the settings on how to add other streaming accounts. One other reviewer mentioned that Sony may release new firmware to do this, but at this time it is not available. I know that the machine, when connected to our network, downloaded some updates, so hopefully, that will be able to happen in the not so distant future. However, I am dubious that Sony will do this anytime soon. Just this past year, we ran into software issues with our Sony Bravia 70 inch television, a high end, costly item. In our case, we had the various icons and the ability to add more, however, the TV hook up to the internet kept dropping. Never thinking that there were software issues with the top of the line television, that was set up for all automatic updates, we first called our internet provider thinking that we had connectivity issues. They ran ragged and went crazy trying to figure out our connectivity issues- tracking our Wi-Fi connection, inside and outside our home, and then finally hard wired the television to get rid of Wi-Fi issues, but we still had issues. Then we paid an authorized local Sony dealer and repair shop - they came and took the TV away to their shop to work on. According to them, even though they are an authorized Sony dealer and repair shop, they cannot contact Sony technicians by phone, but must email them, no human contact. So, we were without our TV for a week, and finally, after emailing Sony over the next week, they determined that it was the television's fault and that Sony was having some connectivity issues on certain TV models. Are you kidding me?? Really, Sony, when were you planning to fix this! We had to start using our Sony blu ray player to get uninterrupted connectivity to Netflix and Prime and still had trouble with the older player; we had to use our son's newer Sony blu ray player so that we could finally have uninterrupted connectivity. This incident happened in February of this year and we have never tried to see if Sony has updated the firmware on our, otherwise, wonderful television to see if the connectivity would be okay just coming through the TV itself. Why did I recount this whole sorry story-because our TV was bought May 2015 and the issue was still not fixed February 2019. I cannot now recommend buying a Sony item if it is not perfect out of the box, no matter what it is. Do not think that they will fix software issues on a timely basis-do not even think this is an option. Based on my experience with Sony, literally use whatever Sony item you have purchased and put it through all of its paces within whatever return period you have, do not procrastinate, because I do not trust Sony to create timely updates to fix issues. It actually makes me sad because I have traditionally bought Sony.

Excellent 4k player
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I upgraded to a 4k Sony X950G TV recently and stream videos on the TV at times. I also have a large collection of Blu-ray movies and I like the quality of actual movies vs steaming. Plus since our TV service is streaming on all of our other TVs, it is nice to free up the wifi. This 4K player is sweet! **Disclaimer, I am a Sony fan. BUT I have products that are not Sony that I still like. And I have had Sony products that I am not a huge fan of*** Pros: 1. Easy set up - I have a Sony TV and Sony sound bar, so they worked together as soon as I plugged it in. Only had to set preferences. Please note that is you want Dolby it is best to make sure your tv and sound bar are set for it as well. The 4K player instructions even tell you how. 2. Ease of use - Extremely simple and FAST! I just push the eject button and the whole front folds down exposing the slot. Once I put the 4k dvd in, my tv flips to the correct input, adjusts the sound bar setting and BAM movie was already loaded. (Having a Sony TV/sound bar is not always necessary, but helps, with the devices taking to each other. You will need to see if your TV/sound bar has this option) 3. Display - WOW. I was impressed with the TV, then a week later bought this player. 1sr movie, Spiderman far from home. The graphics are amazing. Plus with a player, no fear of lag or bad wifi. 4. Quite - while idling and playing, this is very quite. 5. Upscale - the Blu-ray movies look better on it than my old player. Cons 1. Hard to tell is the player is on or not if your TV is set to another input only a small light turns on. However, of you like your devices to blend in and not stick out (or make too much light at night) this can be a plus. I did not test the streaming part, as my tv already does that. But I recommend still hooking up to the internet for the updates. Regarding the price, better than most players priced lower or at the same price. If you can save a few bucks on sale, do it. Well worth it for the quality.

Great features for the price with limitations
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great product but has some limitations and glitches. I am a Sony fan and have always thought that they've had some of the best TVs on the market. The Sony ES line of audio video equipment is top notch and I owned one of their car audio CD players back in the day which was awesome. That being said, I currently own a 55- inch A8Oj OLED Sony TV that has awesome features and picture quality. I'm running this 4K Blu-ray player through a Denon 8K receiver using HDMI 2.1 in and out to the player and the television. My sound system is 7.1. I have a small collection of DVD-audio disks and super audio CD disks which I wanted to be able to play digitally through HDMI. This Sony 4K Blu-ray player is the only unit I have found that will play DVD audio and super audio CD unless you want to spend twice as much for a used oppo player which doesn't do 4K. If you want another player that will do everything this Sony player does you probably will spend over $1,500. That being said, it has its drawbacks. Before purchasing the unit, I read dozens of reviews that are available through Best buy and Amazon which outline some of its failings. Some of the reviews don't get it right. Of course. I have played multiple 4K Blu-ray discs and am totally impressed with picture and sound quality. HDR works great but I'm not so sure about Dolby vision but it is an option that can be turned on and off which may or may not create other glitches in performance that I am not aware of. I have only had it lock up on me a couple of times when playing a 4K Blu-ray disc. I have also had the unit lock up on me a couple of times playing DVD audio or super audio CD. This usually happens when I have paused it for a long period of time. Unplugging the unit and plugging it back in fixes the problem. I realize that most people are not going to want to do this but it works. 95% of the time the unit works flawlessly. Anybody with a 4K TV probably has a smart TV, so the built-in streaming apps in this 4k blu-ray player are unnecessary for me and most people. Their functionality and limitations and number is not an issue for me. If you are techie enough to have had to restart a computer or smartphone to get it to function properly and accept that this is an occasional necessity and our willing to unplug this unit to reset it, then I believe you can live with it's glitches in order to get the benefits of its features. The remote works well and there are plenty of settings to make it work the way you wanted to. I do wish it had play feature buttons on the face of the unit but it does not except power and eject buttons. The build quality is sturdy and excellent. There are no analog outputs on the back of the unit. I initially bought an open box unit in excellent condition from Best buy, but after several weeks I returned it for a brand new model. Same glitches in both units but have not experienced as many in the brand new unit. I'm keeping it and using it mainly for audio purposes. Hope this helps someone out there.

Fantastic UHD Blu-Ray player, but skips sometimes.
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got this player to replace an old Samsung Blu-Ray player that served me well over the years. I do miss the LCD display from that player that this one does not have. Anyways, this player is built like a tank, heavy solid metal design, I can see this lasting a long time. I haven't used any of the smart features since my TV already has them built in, but the upscaling of older DVD's and regular Blu-Rays is fantastic and even better than my old Samsung player. Sadly this player suffers from one fault, where certain multi-layer UHD Blu-Ray discs tend to freeze or skip about 3/4 of the way into a movie. It happened to me once in 007: No Time To Die, and also Dune. It's not that big of a deal to me as I can just rewind it a bit then it continues on, but I know that can bother some so I just wanted to put it out there. Oh also, this player pairs perfectly with a Sony TV. I have an X90J and can control everything on the player through the TV's remote. I recommend this player.

Solid player with a flaw
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. On the surface this thing is awesome, solid build, dead quiet, but there is one flaw. I bought it with my first 4K disk of Shawshank Redemption and it refused to play it. Started freezing up after a couple of minutes and didn’t want to skip and fast forward. I thought that maybe it was the disk and took it to my friend who has two players, Panasonic and LG, and they both played it fine. After that I borrowed 5 disks from him and Sony played them all with no issues. So if you want a silent player and are willing to accept the risk that it might not play everything then this is the right choice. There’s always a chance that Shawshank Redemption is the only disk that won’t play. I really wanted to keep it, but got cold feet because it didn’t play the very first movie I tried to play. That and the fact that you have to manually switch Dolby Vision, a hassle yet nice to have the option.

Great 4k player on a budget
||Posted . Owned for 9 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.95% of the time this player works great and is great for budgets, but I do have playback issues on some discs. Also make sure your discs are extremely clean and without any dust or fingerprints, this player will not recognize the disc. Also spmetimes I will put in a brand new 4k disc and it wont recognize it until I've ejected and tried again a few times... idk what causes this but it eventually plays. When my budget allows down the road I'm going to purchase a higher end Panasonic.

Posted .Thank you for your honest feedback and for highlighting both the strengths and the challenges you’ve had with your UBP-X800M2, JERRYM. We appreciate knowing that you find it a reliable option for most of your playback needs and a good fit for budget-conscious users.
Regarding your disc playback concerns, it’s true that disc cleanliness can significantly impact how reliably any Blu-ray or 4K UHD player recognizes and plays discs. Sony recommends gently wiping discs with a soft, dry cloth from the center outward, and avoiding the use of liquid cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the disc’s contents. Always handle discs by the edges and store them in their cases when not in use to reduce dust and fingerprint buildup, as dust, smudges, and scratches may cause malfunctions or recognition issues.
As for brand-new discs not being recognized immediately, sometimes even new discs can have minor residues from manufacturing or packaging—giving them a careful clean before the first play can help. If you experience issues where a disc isn’t recognized until after a few eject/insert cycles, Sony suggests power resetting the player by unplugging it for one minute. Additionally, ensuring the firmware is up to date may resolve certain compatibility or disc recognition issues. Firmware updates and instructions for your model are available on the Sony support site.
If these steps don’t resolve your issue and you notice playback problems consistently on multiple discs, it might be worth reaching out to Sony support, as the issue may require a deeper look. We truly value your loyalty and feedback—it helps us continue to improve our products and support. If you have any further questions or need troubleshooting guidance, our support team is always here to help!
Thank you for choosing Sony!

Versatile, and excellent player
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I picked this blu-ray player because it can play SACD and DVD-Audio discs as well as various digital formats such as AAC, MP3, FLAC (audio) and MP4, MKV (video.) So far I have not been disappointed. The player can handle all the formats that I have accessed to including some sample multi-channel DSD files that I downloaded from the Internet that some other players refuse to play. The player starts fast and plays 4K Blu-ray flawlessly, supporting all video/audio format bells and whistles (HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, ...) There are few minor quibbles: - There is no front display other than the dim power light, making it awkward to play music without TV screen on. - There is limited control of video file playing. The player does not recognize chapter information included in the MKV video format, making skipping forward or jumping back a hassle. Some old, dedicated video file players are better at this.

A Great "High End" Disc Player!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This top of the line Sony disc player is well made; the chassis it's built on is heavier than a lesser player, in order to reduce vibration from rotating disc. The Blu-ray and 4K discs look great on my Samsung 85" 8K TV, and sound great on my sound system. Then, I also upgraded my HDMI cables (to HDMI 2.1, with its wider bandwidth to accomodate 8K video), and both the audio and video further improved! A few things that my old Sony player had, which I miss is a display on the player that show play time on the disc, and a backlight on the remote; but other than that, this is a great player!

High Quality 4k Player but lacking some things
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The X800M2 is Sony's second best 4K player but it presents a combination of features that make it quite attractive particularly at its modest price point. The video side is very good compared to lower priced units from Samsung and LG. On the audio side, Sony was one of the first to bring Hi Res audio to market. So the audio performance is equally good particularly on 4K discs. As to any downsides, there are a couple of head-scratchers. Dolby Vision is not automatically detected on 4K blu-ray discs and needs to be activated and deactivated each time. What a pain in 2019! Also, there is no visual display on the player whatsoever! This is particularly annoying if you want to use the 800X2 as a stand-alone CD / SACD or blu-ray audio player without a monitor. The other shortcoming is that there are no analog audio jacks to connect it to a stereo system. Instead, there is an HDMI Audio-only port and a coaxial port. Lastly, are where are all the streaming Apps both for movies and for music? How much would all of the aforementioned items cost? Probably mere pennies to a huge corporation like Sony. But they would convince fussy customers like me that Sony had really done its homework in making, what could have been, the best midrange 4K player in the market. I hate bean-counters! However, I would still recommend it as a quality player if you can put up with its not so perfect details. Maybe future firmware will come to the rescue?

Excellent 4K Blu ray player
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What drew me to buying this BD Player is the handsome design and its features. The design is very stylish with no apparent tray and clean lines. It is metal all around and very quiet. There is no display on front other than a little green light to show it is on. The quality of playback is excellent. It supports Dolby vision and that is a plus. 4K blu rays look incredible depending on the movie quality because despite the discs being 4k Ultra HD, not all movies are actually shot in 4K. For example, Wonder Woman is very grainy so there is no crisp detail. However, a movie like Prometheus, which was shot in 5K, looks very crisp and 4K. Regular Blu rays do look better with this player. Fine details will look enhanced and have the appearance of almost 4k. The menu is very streamlined and the info shown on screen when playing a disc is very informative showing the output of the disc and the output being sent to the TV. It has many options and you can really spend a lot of time trying different settings and seeing what works better for you. In my opinion this is the best mid-high-range U-HD player there is.

Has Almost everything I wanted in UHD Blu Ray Play
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It works perfect with my Sony Z9D UHD 3D TV along with my Marantz SR7013 Receiver. I purchased this so I could utilize the Dolby Vision Capabilities of my TV. I wasn’t disappointed. It plays my Dolby Vision UHD BluRays perfectly and the picture is amazing. I was finally able to not only utilize Dolby Vision but also Dolby Atmos at the same time. Overall I’m very pleased with my purchase. There are two small things to note. Watching a movie with Dolby Vision requires the user to go into Setup and turn it on. Then in my case I have a 3D TV. You need to go back in to Setup and turn it back off to use your 3D. The other thing to note is the lack of supported Apps. You get NETFLIX, Prime Video and YouTube. That’s it! My other older Sony BluRay has more such as Slacker and Pandora. That’s why this wasn’t a deal breaker for me.
