My Panasonic UB420-K died after 3 and 1/2 years. Every time I tried to play a disc, got a could not read error. So I began searching for a new player. My research led to this Sony. I read all of the info concerning freezing and other issues. I realize that there are risks inherent in any technology purchase. So, I looked around and found an open box buy for this player attremendous savings. I pulled the trigger and received this yesterday. I tried all of the discs that were unreadable on the Panasonic and they played and looked amazing.
I realize that I have only had this player a couple of days, but so far I am extremely happy with this purchase. I can't believe how quiet this is compared to the 420. Dolby Vision is excellent, the upscale quality is superb. I believe that I have found a fine machine that will provide many hours of viewing pleasure.
An obvious recommendation.

For a lower/mid tier soundbar, this product produces excellent sound. In the title I stated “Excellent sound for the price”. I purchased this with a Bravia 8 TV. Best Buy was having a Black Friday sale and offered it for half price when bundled with the TV. I don’t know if I’d purchase it at original MSRP.
The sound itself is excellent. It has very good mid and higher range output. It could use a touch more bass, I will probably be purchasing an add on sub woofer to alleviate this slight shortcoming. Speech has exceptional clarity at all volumes unlike a cheaper Samsung sound bar that this replaced.
The one thing that is lacking is there was no user manual and I don’t know and haven’t figured out if the there is a way to adjust the differing levels (treble, mid range, bass) of sound. One minor problem is that my TV occasionally arbitrarily switches from the sound bar to the TV’s speakers. I believe this is a problem with the TV’s programming.

Best 4K player on the "mainstream" market
I've been using an Xbox 1S for my UHD disc playback, and decided to upgrade to a real player, because the Xbox kept not sensing a disc in the player, as well as not truly having Dolby Vision for movies. I bought this player and it's not only better than the Xbox, it blows the xbox away! Picture quality is superb. Vivid color, tight blacks, and no jitters with animation. Audio is fantastic with ATMOS and my 7.1 system. Bootup is quick, disc loading is speedy, and options are fantastic. On top of that, it plays many types of frequently found video containers such as mkv files. Really is versatile. Only two negatives are it has limited streaming apps and no auto DV/HDR10 switching. You have to have a Roku, AppleTV or smart TV if you want a lot of streaming options. You have to manually turn off DV if you want to watch a movie in HDR10.

I bought this on sale for $239, and for that price it's amazing. I purchased the Sony because it supports SACD and DVD-Audio and I needed to 4K-UHD for BluRay. I also have an OPPO 4K BluRay that is not UHD and for the audio, this is just as good (I never use the discrete output of the OPPO - so it's all digital to digital comparison).

The Good
- I have watched already UHD movies and they ran perfectly fine. No Skipping or any problem.
- It is nice that the remote volume can be used for a Sony TV volume.
- Can be used for streaming.
The Bad
- The remote should have been much better. I also have a Sony TV which has a remote made of metal and feels luxurious. This remote seems like plastic and feels like a toy. A 30$ Fire TV Stick Remote feels better in the hand.

I've thrown over 150 dvds, blu-rays and 4K discs at this unit, and it's handled everything beautifully so far. The 4k HDR looks sharp, bright and colorful while avoiding the over-saturation many players suffer from. Regular blu-rays look better than on previous players (not 4k, but definitely sharper). Dvds are decent...the lower resolutions are definitely showing their age on 4k tvs, but this player does a good job of cleaning up the image, but don't expect miracles. The dvds and regular blu-rays play silently and load in under 5 seconds. Occassionally, you might hear the disc drive upon starting a 4K disc, but overall, the quietest disc player I have ever owned. Solid construction, pretty heavy, but runs very cool. The home screen is pretty basic, only 7 icons, just 3 streaming apps (Netflix, Prime Video, and YouTube.) I personally prefer the simplistic, uncluttered layout Sony chose for this device. While some people may like a player with more apps, between smart tvs, game consoles and streaming sticks, chances are you've already got a preferred streaming platform. (Though the 4K from the 3 apps on this unit is impressive...not quite as good as the 4K discs, but nearly!)

Touch to beat at this price. It is also very musical for a 4k player - SACD’s sound excellent. I hate the fact that the front plate has no display but it’s not a deal breaker. I also have the 700. If you are interested only in videos, that is a better deal. If you want to play CD’s and SACD’s the 800 is the way to go.

This is the first review I have written for any disc player, but this unit is the best I have seen. The Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray/DVD Player Playback speed is INCREDIBLE, even on busy action scenes (such as watching British Rugby fans 'argue' over victory)! No more blaming the TV refresh rate for being slow and making busy video choppy. Even busy 3D playback is smooth. When I first saw this thing on the Best Buy display shelf, I thought it was a multi-disc player for its width (17 inches), but it turns out to be full of tech and cooling space. Its size allows it to remain cooler than most units. Though energy-efficient, a 4K player is much busier than DVD or standard Blu-ray, and thus runs hotter, so staying cool is a must, and this unit does it (some older 4K units could almost warm a cup of coffee). Apart from the usual ethernet connection found in most newer players to connect to an internet router or home network, it also features Wi-Fi to connect to a Wi-Fi router (just 1-time select our router ID from a list and enter its password), which makes player software updates a breeze. It even has Bluetooth so I can connect my cushy Bluetooth noise-reduction headphones. It also features Netflix, Prime Video and even YouTube. A USB connector hidden behind a tethered slip-off panel below the power button lets us watch any-format video recorded on a thumb drive, external disc drive, digital camera/video, etc. The Setup menu is EXTENSIVELY detailed, allowing for Parental Control, enable Blu-ray Internet content, customized audio effects, flat display formats, 3D formats, 4p, Dolby Video, Deep Color, and this sleep-inducing list goes on, down to a Factory Reset option and personal information removal. But fortunately, there is an 'Easy Setup' option for the less tech-savvy among us, which does all the things us tech geeks normally pride ourselves on. We can even control it through the HDMI TV connection (I just like being able to turn the TV off and it shuts the player down). A second HDMI connector is available (plus an alternative Coaxial digital cable connector) for connecting sound bars or AV amplifiers. I am truly pleased with this player and have yet to encounter a problem. Being a retired A+ Certified Technician, I am normally hard to please.

My girlfriend has an extensive blu-ray collection. This unit provides decent picture and enough options to affect quality output without being excessive. It may be me, but has disc playback always been this slow? I recommend a streaming device as opposed to disc players, but it serves it's purpose.

The Sony X800M2 4k Bluray player is a very good player for less than $250 . It has has HDR10 and Dolby Vision. To get Dolby Vision you have to go back into settings but not a problem once you get used to doing this. The player also has streaming services for Netflix,
prime video and YouTube. This player looks to be made better than Sony's previous model. All in all a very good player for a decent price

I upgraded from the Sony x700 and I am so happy I did. The build quality is so much better for only $50 more. I'm shocked and how cheap the x700 seems. I notice a defiant difference in the picture as well. The x700 looked great but I see a slightly better black/contrast and color than I did on the x700 especially with Dolby Vision. Alot of people doing the fact that you have to change the dolby vision setting but for me the extra 10 seconds doesnt matter. We also only watch movies and maybe stream Netflix so the lack of apps doesnt matter to me either. I think this is a great blu ray player especially for the price.

I took the 4k plunge recently and I’m glad I did! Not only is it a great 4k player, it also will play SACD and DVD-A! No complaints about the player at all. The interface is simple, but easy to use and navigate and also very responsive. The remote is a simple Sony remote akin to the same type of remotes packaged with previous blu-ray players, but I use my same universal remote anyway so that didn’t matter to me. I haven’t honestly even tried the streaming features since I strictly use my Roku for that.

This is my second purchase for this particular Sony Model. Since I've had and been using the first unit for more than a year and a half, I will largely base my review on the first unit, since both units are the same.
Overall, this is a very nice machine with only a few very minor complaints. I'll state those later. When I removed the unit from the box, it was very noticed how well built it is due to its weight (8.4 lbs) This is a big contrast compared to the majority of disc players that may weigh a third or less of this unit. It's good to see that Sony took some time constructing this unit. Setting the unit up is fairly easy since there is only the hdmi cable to connect (in my setup). Depending on how others set the unit up more cables may be needed if a receiver, etc is used.
When the machine is first turned on there is an auto setup feature to go through for language network etc. before a disc can be played There are many different options under settings for picture, sound, etc. More on that later. While playing a disc, picture and sound quality are very good to excellent.
This unit does also have a few streaming apps.
As there are only 3 (Netflix, Prime Video, Youtube) I don't recommend streaming on this if your smart tv or other streaming device has better smart functionality. This unit has Dolby Vision, but it has to be turned on and off manually, since there's no "auto" setting. The remote control is not of the best design physically, but it works the way it should.
There is one thing that I do need to note. Some users have complained about this unit freezing or skipping while playing 4k discs. I haven't yet encountered this yet since most discs I have played were 1080P blurays and only a few 4ks. There is a youtube video that describes this issue and how to fix it. Under the picture settings, there is a setting for 4k upscale in this are three options: Auto 1, Auto 2 and Off. The video states to select Off. There is also another setting under picture called cinema conversion mode. This is supposed to be changed from "film" to "video". The youtube video states that changing these settings is supposed to help with the skipping/freezing issue. It's woth a try for those experiencing this problem.
The only 4k machine that I would rank better than this unit is the Panasonic DP-UB820 since it has a few more features such as front panel display, HDR10+ and better function of Dolby Vision. It also is much more costly. Otherwise this si a very nice unit that is a very solid performer with disc playback and very good picture and sound quality.

So far no complaints only praise. The only thing missing are the RCA out for older equipment. But hey.... It's almost 2021. Time for a a new Receiver or Amplifier. The 4k picture and enhancements are what I was looking for. The SACD and A audio were necessary for me. This package has it all. Including a Dolby picture.

I had the previous version and worked perfect until Dolby Vision came and had to upgrade to this one, same quality as the expensive 4k Players, I tried other players like the XBox X but quality is poor and have problems with some movies and audio sync, this player is worth the price, don’t get the 700 version that not as good as this one.

Bought this as an upgrade from the 4K Blu-Ray player in my PS5 and it is well worth the price. I can't speak on the streaming apps as I only use this for my physical 4K discs; but, this meets all of my needs and surpasses my expectations for what I use it for. It allows me to maximize the potential of my setup with the Dolby Vision and seamlessly passes through all of the audio details in my favorite films for my sound system. As others have stated, the only complaint I really have is the fact that it does not automatically detect if your disc is capable of Dolby Vision so you have to adjust that on your own from the settings for every movie; however, I knew this prior to purchasing so it doesn't bother me that much.

Easy to use. With the 4KHD TV, 18.1 HDMI cable, and this player, the 4K discs look and sound amazing. BluRay is amazing unto itself; it seems as if 4K has perhaps 2x the clarity of BR. Wasn't sure if the upgrade would be noticeable enough to warrant the effort and $, but it was definitely worth it.
