Disappointed

I had no idea there was a major firmware version upgrade until I saw it downloading in the app. I used the buds for only a little while with the shipping firmware (ver. 1.01) but it the new version seemed to adversely affect the ANC (but cannot say for certain). I was looking forward to the release of the XM5s since Sony has a track record of improving their headphones and earbuds with each generation. The XM5s are an unfortunate departure from this trend. Though not entirely without merit, the negatives far outweigh the positives. ============================== First the cons: * Like the XM4, Sony does not pack ear tips that properly seal for me (and I can't be the only one). It's nice they include extra small tips, but what about the other end - extra large tips. Try as I might, I could not get a proper seal, so sound and ANC with the included tips was a flat no-go. Hey Sony, for the same price as the XM5s, a competitor includes SEVEN(!!!) ear tip sizes. * Speaking of the ear tips, why have Sony stopped including silicone? The foam tips are nice enough, but they have a very limited life-time; silicone tips can last for years. * If you purchase or already have a preferred set of tips (that fit), be aware that the dirt/wax filter is now part of the included ear tips, not the buds themselves. So, you risk getting dirt/wax directly into the earbuds - especially since you WILL be dropping them (see design comments below) * Design - the XM5s are just begging to be dropped. Sony have decided to make the sides of the buds glossy which makes taking them out of the case difficult and removing them from your ears an adventure. Good luck if your finger tips are the least bit sweaty. I can guarantee these will find the sidewalk many times. * The revamped app STILL does not allow customization of taps. FOUR TAPS to change the volume??? C'mon Sony! * Beware wireless charging. The case gets VERY warm (as do the buds if they're in the case while wirelessly charging). Remember, that was one of the reported symptoms of the XM4 battery issues (at least according to the Sony support rep I dealt with when my original XM4 batteries decided to go belly-up). BTW - Sony replaced my XM4s even after the warranty ended, so kudos to Sony for that. * ANC - in a word, mediocre. As I compared the XM5s with my current XM4s, the older XM4's ANC performed noticeably better. I used the same ear tips for both and had a proper seal. ===================================== Now for the pros: * Audio is excellent and seems to have improved some over the the already excellent XM4s. Sound is well balanced (clean highs and solid lows) and the EQ included with the app is excellent. * The case is slimmer than the one for the XM4s ====================================== All in all, I could not have been more disappointed. These are going back to Best Buy and I will continue using my XM4s. If you currently own a set of the WF-1000XM4 earbuds, I'd recommend NOT upgrading. If you own the older XM3 earbuds, I'd say it's a toss up, due mostly to the size difference of the buds and the MUCH smaller case.

Noise cancellation too. I was in the market for earbuds I could use for working out at the gym (and for other purposes, but primarily workout). My main concerns were noise cancellation, water resistance, and fit. Unfortunately these did not fit well, no matter which size eartip I tried. They fell out constantly. Maybe it’s just my ears. They also started to feel uncomfortable after a while. I had to return. I’m now trying the Bose QuietComfort earbuds. So far, so good…

We regret to know that you're not having the best experience with your WF-1000XM5 and you've been running into some issues, particularly with the noise cancellation and fit of the unit. This is not the experience we want you to have. If the size of the earbud tips does not match the size of your ear canals or the headset is not worn properly in your ears, you may not obtain the correct sound qualities, noise canceling effects, or call performance.
To ensure optimal performance, as well as to obtain the best fit and prevent the headset from falling out, we recommend to change the earbud tips to ones that fit more snugly in your ears. If you feel earbud tips are difficult to put into your ears, change the size of earbud tips or squeeze earbud tips lightly before wearing the headset. When wearing them, gently pull up on the top of your ears, put the earbud tips in your ear canal, and then twist the earbuds into place. This makes sure the earbuds are firmly in the ear canal.
As for insufficient noise canceling effects, we recommend to make sure to turn off the Adaptive Sound Control, and try to turn on the noise canceling function manually when you need it. The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.
It's also unfortunate that the unit had to be returned. We could've walked you through with some troubleshooting and offer assistance with our product.
We hope you will consider Sony again in a future purchase. Thank you for the feedback.

Ambient mode is useless

I feel like both ambient mode and anc are weaker than the Linkbuds S. The only improvement I hear is better balance and over all sound quality with longer battery life. These fall out of my ears constantly and the glossy surface is slippery and oily feeling after wearing. They're not bad, but also not what they should have been. I'd probably rate them higher if not for my experience with the link buds s.

Great sound but not enough

I ended up returning because they were difficult for me to put in and remove. The shape is sort of rounded and the material had no grip.

Good earbuds

Is it worth it? in my opinion yes but for other people probably not but it up to you.

Overhyped but ok

Good sound but tend to have connectivity issues. Cons- slippers. Doesn’t recognize when its out of the case or in. Constantly having to fiddle with it to connect by taking them out of the case and putting them back in. I would recommed to finding alternative earphones.

Been using the 1000s since third gen and these don’t disappoint Noise cancellation feels a lot more isolated and the music is crisp and clear. I use them for the gym and everyday activities. They have not fallen out once.

XM5's are definitely better than the XM4's. Overall, a great device.
