Your feedback is extremely important to us and is very much appreciated. We recommended updating the firmware of the headphones (via the Sony Sound Connect app) for optimum performance. The software update improves the general performance of the unit and includes key features, applications, and bug fixes.
By using the Sony Sound Connect app, you can make few adjustments to your headphones settings to suit your needs. This will give you more control over your headphones and their performance. To ensure optimal performance, as well as to obtain the best fit and prevent the headset from falling out, change the earbud tips to ones that fit more snugly in your ears. If you feel earbud tips are difficult to put into your ears, change the size of earbud tips or squeeze earbud tips lightly before wearing the headset. When wearing them, gently pull up on the top of your ears, put the earbud tips in your ear canal, and then twist the earbuds into place. This makes sure the earbuds are firmly in the ear canal.

I understand that statement may come across as hyperbole, so let me explain... The day that these headphones came in the mail, I had a family member experience a significant medical event that necessitated me spending multiple nights in their hospital room with them as they recovered. The active noise cancelling (ANC) from these earbuds helped drown out the "hospital" noise at night and enabled me to get some good, quality sleep during a stressful time. You're probably not reading this review because you're about to spend multiple nights in a hospital room, but you probably are here because you're interested in some great ANC. And this is not just great ANC, it's fantastic. I'm not sure what exactly is happening, but when you put these earbuds in, there's a slight calibration to your ears. I hear it as a faint hum in the background for a few seconds, and then all background noise is gone. It happens automatically, and it is incredible. I'm excited to try these on an airplane for the first time because I'm pretty sure they will even block out that sound. Another great ANC feature is the ability of the earbuds to determine what you're doing and adjusting the levels based on that activity. There are settings for "staying," "walking," "running," and "riding in a vehicle." You can also program the headphones through the app to switch to the various modes based on your location. I have one setting for when I'm at my desk at work and another when I'm having lunch in a local park, for example. To get past the ANC, the audio quality is top notch as well. It's super rare to find some in-ear headphones that have quality bass and that's present here. There are also highly adjustable EQ settings in the app. Battery life has been amazing too. I mentioned earlier that I was able to have these in throughout the night while with my relative, and even with those lengthy sessions, I was able to go multiple days without needing to recharge. If you're looking for a set of headphones that sound great, last a long time, and have top-notch active noice cancelling, I doubt you can do better than these.

Our XM5 is equipped with 360 Reality Audio. 360 Reality Audio is a new music experience using Sony’s 360 three-dimensional audio technology. With the help or use of a music streaming service (charged) app that supports 360 Reality Audio on your smartphone or tablet equipped with iOS or Android. By optimizing the sound field and the acoustic feature of headset with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app, you can enjoy a more realistic sense of reality.
Also, our XM5 has two sound quality modes.
Priority on sound quality: Prioritizes the sound quality.

After trying many alternatives, the WF1000XM5 is the first one that really works for me. The WF1000XM5 uses a tip that is a little different than most earbuds. I would say it is a combination of standard silicon tips and spongy foam tips. Four sizes are included, so it should be easy to find ones that are a good fit for your ears. The sound from the earbuds is excellent. They have a good bass that is never too overpowering. With the EQ, you can really adjust how much treble or bass you get. The earbuds provide good separation and make individual instruments really stand out in the music. The Sony Headphones app is an integral part of using the earbuds. If you do purchase a pair of these earbuds, I would spend some time exploring all the settings you can customize for the earbuds. The Sound tab is where you configure Noise Canceling and Equalizer. I really like that they allow you to choose between a set of pre-configured EQs, create a custom EQ, and even have a beta feature to help you find your ideal EQ. The system tab has options to customize the touch buttons and the "Determines optimal Earbud Tips" brings you into a test to ensure the tips are appropriate for your ears. Note to Sony: it took me some exploring to find this, so I would recommend that it is easier to find. I used the earbuds for a few Zoom calls, and they seem to work well. I didn't hear myself speaking but the voice clarity from other participants was very good. It did take me a little experimenting on the proper orientations to insert the earbuds in my ears. The proper way to wear them is to have the dot at the bottom of the earbud. That seems to keep them the most stable and easiest way to get touch controls to work. One of my primary use cases with the earbuds is for use on my Peloton. With almost every other earbud from Bose, Apple, and Beats, the earbud would fall out after a few mins on the ride. These ones were the first one I could complete a full ride without them falling out.

We regret to learn the you've had experienced issues with the noise canceling not sufficient on these earbud headphones. The noise canceling effects may not be achieved depending on how the headset units are worn.
To make the most of the noise canceling function, we recommend to make sure that headphones are worn properly and also turn off the Adaptive Sound Control, and try to turn on the noise canceling function manually when you need it. The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.
It's also unfortunate that the unit had to be returned. We could've walked you through with some troubleshooting and offer assistance with our product.

Great TWS but may not be worth an upgrade

The smaller size is perfect for my ears and no longer causes my ears to hurt. The ear tips are hit or miss if you ask me and I am using an ear tip from the XM4s on one of the sides. The overall sound signature has been improved in my opinion. The soundstage is wider the highs sounds more crisp compared to the XM4s which I always thought sounded a little muffled. The bass is strong and clean though the XM4s bass may be softer if that makes sense. The noise canceling seems to be the same from my experience so far. Overall a decent upgrade though not sure it warrants one over the XM4s though for me the smaller size was worth it.

Starting with the external stuff, they come in a small case, so it's easy to pocket the earbuds and not worry about it. USB-C charging. Perfect. It's good to see companies dropping the micro-USB nonsense at this point. Speaking of charging, the earbuds case can also charge wirelessly (Qi). I tested this and it works great! Regard the form and feel, I find the earbuds to be very comfortable; although the smooth finish of the earbuds, themselves, resulted in some sliding around on my ear. Choosing the correct cushion size helped this just a little, but that's still an important feature - and the Sony software checks for this. How does it sound? With a proper fitting, the sound is incredibly clear. The earbuds can still deliver some very satisfying bass, but it's not distorted. Another feature that I really liked (and didn't realize I needed) is the ability to have the earbuds paired and connected to more than one device at a time. That means I can have them connected to both my tablet and phone simultaneously...and whichever device starts the sound will be the one that takes over. The accompanying Sony app is really needed to get the full capabilities of the headset - especially the equalizer. All in all, these earbuds function exactly the way I need earbuds to function; and the sound that comes out of them is fantastic.
