For optimum performance, make sure to install the latest software version of the headphones (via the Sony Headphones Connect app). You can also adjust the settings of the Ambient Sound Mode (via the Sony app) depending on your needs. Voice focus: Unwanted noise will be suppressed while announcements or people’s voices are picked up, allowing you to hear them as you listen to music.

Note: Depending on the ambient conditions and the type/volume of audio playback, ambient sounds may not be heard even when using the Ambient Sound Mode. Do not use the headset in places where it would be dangerous if you are unable to hear ambient sounds, such as on a road with car and bicycle traffic.

The WF-1000XM5 features cutting-edge technology to deliver premium sound quality and the best noise-canceling performance on the market. Noise reduction algorithms developed with AI machine learning suppress ambient noise and ensure the person on the other end of the phone can hear your voice clearly even in noisy situations. The effectiveness of ANC is heavily dependent on the "airtightness" of the seal in your ear canal. Since you mentioned they feel bulkier than your previous pair, it’s possible the earbud tips currently in use aren't providing the optimal seal for your ear shape.

- Try the "Determines Optimal Earbud Tips" Test: We recommend using the Sony | Sound Connect app to run a seal test. This function measures the air-tightness of your current tips and can tell you if you should try a different size to better block out cabin noise.

- The "Twist" Technique: When inserting the earbuds, gently pull up on the top of your ear, insert the tip, and twist the earbud into place. This helps the noise-isolating foam expand correctly within the canal.

Regarding your flight to the mainland, the WF-1000XM5 is rated for up to 8 hours with ANC on. However, certain high-intensity settings can drain the battery faster than expected (specifically if using high-resolution codecs like LDAC™ or features like "Speak-to-Chat").

- Check your Bluetooth Codec: If you are using LDAC™ (for Hi-Res audio) in a high-interference environment like an airplane, the battery life can drop to approximately 5 hours. Switching the Connection Quality to "Priority on Stable Connection" in the app can significantly extend playback time.

- Adjust Features: Features like DSEE Extreme™ (which upscales compressed music) and Speak-to-Chat consume additional power. Turning these off during long flights when they aren't needed can help you reach that 8-hour mark.
