Glad I kept my WF1000XM4s
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Any enthusiasm I had for these is pretty much gone, and very happy I didn’t sell off my WF1000XM4s. They sound excellent, they pair up right well with the iPhone; beyond that, the little annoyances start to add up. First, the fit. If you have larger ears, you’re going to experience a lot more outside noise than usual. Some odd reason, the fit isn’t as tight as the previous model. Switching to a larger tip makes it uncomfortable for me and then you have this issue where it doesn’t fit in the case perfectly. Hopefully a third party like Comply or SpinFit will update their catalog to maybe remedy this. Two, random dropouts during playback. Sometimes it’ll be the right bud, or both. This may or may not be linked to the “unknown accessory” tab that randomly pops up on my phone screen. This has never happened on the previous model or any of my other wireless ANC buds. It’s quite annoying. New tips, maybe a firmware update will correct these annoyances ? I haven’t used these for phone calls. As expected the battery life is excellent in both the buds, and case. In the right setting, music detail , experience are excellent.

iPhone users, If you lose it it’s gone
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I realized today how incredibly inconvenient it is to not be able to track these earpods because, well, you just can’t! I misplaced the case with one earpod in and was just looking and looking. I wish it was register-able with Apple’s find my, or even on sony sound connect but nope. No way to locate it but to dig deep in your own memory. It’s also too big. I wear it underneath a cloth head band when I’m at work and when i take it off it hurts like heck I could cry. Not as confortable as they say. And I’m wearing the xxs and still falls off. Only things i like about it is the sound quality and the color pink.

Great earbuds
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great earbuds. Prefer the fitment and noise cancellation over AirPod pros. However these are my second pair as the first pair was defective, it would cut off in one ear very randomly but the replacement hasn’t had any issues as of yet. Definitely recommend unless you get a bad pair..

Sound Issues at 299.99
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First off the design of the earbuds are amazing. The fit and feel way better than the "Sony WF-1000XM4." Sony also having their own app to help you customize your headphones/earbuds is quite a nice feature. Secondly an improvement from it's predecessor is that you can use either earbud how you want. With the "WF-1000XM4" the right earbud was the "main" so if you wanted to use the left, you had to have both. The Sony Wireless WF-1000XM5 allows you to use whichever you please which is preferable. The only issue I have is sound quality. Sony has come a long way, so should their products. Sometimes it sounds amazing, sometomes I to turn it all the way up just to hear it. The most frustrating issue is their are time's where it sounds like certain parts of the track is muffled or underwater. Some might try to say that "oh your listening to a posted version from an unreliable source" but I listen to it directly from the artist themselves. Overall the earbuds aren't bad, Sony is heading in the right direction. Just some small tune ups.

Almost great
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Headphones sound great, with great noise canceling, but just don't stay in my ears. As a contractor that's moving all day, I need something small that stays in place. Did some research to find a lot of people have this problem and end up returning or getting new ear tips. Not cool for how expensive they were.

Design Flaw = No ANC For Me
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sony WF1000 XM5 earbuds was the most anticipated product for me. I already had the Sony Connect app as I own other Sony headphones as well as other brands. So set up was easy for me. The Sony Connect app is excellent, easy to follow and loaded with customization and features. After fully charging the ear buds and completing the set up, I put them through the paces, listening to music and videos, making calls , etc. Everything seemed to work fine. The sound quality was excellent. But the one thing that didn’t seem to work was the ANC. I tried all of the ear piece sizes several times but couldn’t get the proper seal for noise cancellation. I tested each ear piece with the app, but the app indicated that none of them offered the proper seal for noise cancellation. At first I thought I had a defective pair of ear buds, but after 4 days I now realize that the stem that holds the ear piece is too short to go far enough into my ear canal to form a proper seal. If I take my finger and press it against that back of the ear bud as hard as I can pushing it toward my ear canal I can just barely get enough seal to get ANC. I have several other ear buds including the Bose QC and Google Pixel and I have never had this issue. I always use a medium size ear piece and get a perfect seal. This is the first time I have had this issue. A quick fix for Sony would be to make a foam ear piece that is about 1/8” longer. But without a fix these are headed for my drawer or for use only in my home when it is quiet. And this is a shame because the sound quality is fantastic, battery life is very good, and the app is excellent. The case is small and easy to carry in a pocket. The ear buds are light and comfortable in the ear. But they are shiny and slippery. In fact I often have to grab them a couple of times just to get them out of the case because they keep slipping. I hope Sony sees this and comes out with a simple fix (longer ear piece). But until then I cannot recommend these ear buds.

Just OKAY
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. They’re not the best ear buds I’ve used, but they’re not terrible. Sound quality is good, holds a charge well. I think they fit in my ears well, my husband says they hurt and don’t stay in. They do come with several tips to make them fit better. The controls on the buds are impossible to use and barely work. Connectivity to my iPhone is only okay, sometimes they connect sometimes they don’t. For the price, I’d probably get something else.

Quiet Enough to Hear My Own Letdown
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m a little disappointed in these earbuds, but not completely unsatisfied either. The noise cancelling is phenomenal—even while running my riding lawn mower or tractor, I can barely hear the engine. The sound quality is solid, and they fit comfortably. My biggest gripe is the volume. I get that Sony likely keeps it capped for liability and hearing protection reasons, but I paid a premium for these and I’m a grown adult capable of making my own choices. I don’t use headphones often, but when I do it’s usually while working outside or working out—and in those moments, I want loud music. These just don’t deliver the punch I was looking for. I’m not expecting over-ear headphone levels, but at full volume I could almost take a nap with them in. If you’re buying them for plane travel, phone calls, or casual listening, you’ll probably love them. Everything else—the noise cancellation, comfort, sound quality—is top-notch. But if, like me, you want your earbuds to crank up and push you through a workout or a day of yard work, you may find yourself wishing for more.

Posted .Hi MasterP,
Thank you for your detailed and honest review. We're truly sorry to hear that the WF-1000XM5 earbuds haven't been the right fit for you, and we appreciate you sharing your experience.
It's great to know that you're finding the noise canceling and sound quality to be top-notch—we're proud of those features, especially the impressive noise reduction that helps you focus even with loud machinery.
We understand your frustration with the volume, especially since you rely on your music for motivation during workouts and yard work. While we can’t change the volume limits, we do want to make sure you’re getting the most out of them.
Here are a few troubleshooting tips that may help increase the perceived volume and overall audio quality:
1- Check the Fit: Making sure you're using the right size earbud tips is crucial for both sound quality and volume. A perfect seal can significantly improve bass response and perceived volume. Try swapping the tips for a different size to see if it makes a difference. You may find that a different size, or even a different size for each ear, creates a better seal.
2- Adjust the volume on Your Device: While you may have already done this, always double-check the volume on the connected device. Sometimes different audio sources or apps can have their own separate volume setting that needs to be adjusted.
3- Reset the headset. This will delete settings and pairing information, including any temporary glitch that could be causing problems. You can initialize the reset by following the steps in the link below:
https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/2963/v1/en/contents/TP1000783924.html?search=reset%20
We hope these suggestions are helpful, and we truly appreciate your insights. Your feedback is valuable to us as we continue to develop our products.
Thank you for considering Sony products!

Good but not for me.
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have an iPhone 14 Pro with Airpods Pro 2nd gen and an Google Pixel 9 Pro XL with the Sony XM5 earbuds. The Sony XM5 are really good in sound quality and with the EQ you can make the your own. Great bass, good mid-range and great highs. All I'm missing is volume, I use them for work in a really noise environment and they couldn't keep up. Noise cancelling is good but I still prefer my Airpods Pro 2nd gen. Were the Sony XM5 disappointed me was on the transparency mode, I was expecting the same clarity and openness of the Airpods Pro but that never happened. Sony XM5 earbuds are great in sound, comfort, Noise cancelling and lots of features on the app.

Best Sound & Call Quality. Worst Controls & App
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Unlike most users, I maximize my earbuds for work, all-day use, focused on calls. Ever since Jabra left the US market, i had been on a hunt for a proper replacement. Unfortunately Sony doesn’t have a solution. Pros: Sound Quality, both for music and calls. Noise Cancellation, Hear-Through is world class. Battery Life, gets me through the day. Surrounding Noise Sensors are world class. Cons: Janky Sony App, feels like it was created by kids. Haptic Touch Buttons, rarely works. No Voice Confirmation for actions. No Mute for Calls (dealbreaker). Overall, if you want the best sound, clearest phone conversations, and best sensory technology, these are the best in the business. Just the cons outweigh the pros for me.

Amazing sound, audio cuts out a lot
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love the way these sound, they sound better than the nothing ears and my airpods pro 2 by a significant amount. The big problem with these are that they cut out badly, if I move around with them in my ears they start cutting ou sometimes losing audio for a few seconds at a time. This issue happens when they're connected to my apple watch, apple tv, MacBook and iphone. I go for a walk or really exercise with these because they cut out so badly. I understand that I can't adjust the ldac with iphone but this is ruining my experience with these. I also have it set to prioritize Bluetooth connection over sound quality on the app.

Posted .Thank you for your incredibly detailed and honest feedback, EastonP.
We are absolutely thrilled to hear that the WF-1000XM5 earbuds are providing a sound experience that significantly surpasses both your Nothing and AirPods Pro 2—that's a wonderful compliment to our audio engineering team!
We are sincerely sorry, however, that the severe audio cutting out is ruining your experience, especially during movement and exercise. We understand how frustrating it must be to have such incredible audio quality interrupted by connectivity issues across all your Apple devices.
You are correct that the setting to "prioritize Bluetooth connection over sound quality" should mitigate these issues, and the fact that it isn't suggests there may be a specific issue with the Bluetooth signal or a configuration that needs adjustment. Since the problem persists across multiple source devices, we want to help you troubleshoot and resolve this promptly.
We would like our technical support team to investigate this issue further, as it is crucial that you can rely on them for uninterrupted listening, especially while walking or exercising. They can walk you through some advanced steps, such as resetting the earbuds or checking for specific firmware updates, that often resolve chronic dropout problems.

Great sound trapped in a terrible package
||Posted . Owned for 7 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Let's start with the good; the sound quality on these is genuinely impressive. Clear, rich, and detailed. If that were the only thing that mattered, this would be a 5-star review. But then there's everything else. The foam tips that come included are basically decorative. They don't seal, they don't stay put, and I ended up buying aftermarket silicone tips just to get a proper fit. For earbuds at this price point, that shouldn't be necessary. The Sony companion app takes an impressive amount of time to connect. Half the time, you'll find yourself force-quitting the app and trying again. When it does finally decide to cooperate, there's a solid chance just ONE earbud will connect while the other just sits there doing nothing. The fix? Put them both back in the case and start the whole ritual over from scratch. It turns a 3-second task into a 1-minute exercise in patience. For the charging case. It feels like it belongs to a pair of $15 gas station earbuds. Flimsy, cheap-feeling plastic with a slick finish that begs to be dropped. And when you DO drop it (because you will) 9 times out of 10, the case explodes open and launches each earbud a good 5+ feet in random directions like escape pods. You'll be on your hands and knees searching under furniture. It's impressive how consistently it happens. At this price, Sony should be doing better on build quality and fit. The sound keeps me from giving it one star, but I can't recommend these without a serious asterisk.

Posted .Hi JTK78,
Thank you for sharing such a detailed review of your experience with the WF-1000XM5. While we are glad to hear that the clear, rich, and detailed sound quality impressed you, we sincerely appreciate your candid feedback regarding the fit, the companion app, and the build of the charging case. It is insights like yours that help us refine our designs and improve the experience for all our users.
To help ensure you get the most out of your earbuds, we have a few recommendations that might resolve some of the frustrations you mentioned:
1- Tip Fit & Seal: Please try the "Air-tightness Test" within the Sony Sound Connect app. It can help confirm if a different size (S, M, L) provides a better acoustic seal than the ones you currently use.
2- App & Connectivity: To resolve the "one bud connecting" issue, please ensure both the earbuds and the Sound Connect app are updated to the latest firmware version. We frequently release stability patches to improve the handshake between the app and the hardware.
We want you to enjoy your music without the added stress of technical hurdles. If the connectivity issues persist after updating your firmware, please contact our support team so we can provide further assistance.

Great headphones, dont work out with them
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First off, the sound is great and the noise cancellation is pretty good. The foam tip earbuds are very comfortable and seal pretty well. Battery life is top notch. Ive tried the “AI” features and gone through the accompanying app for them. Don’t really care for the voice assistant that comes with them. It tries to listen to every word ans interrupts the music every few seconds when turned on. I definitely wouldn’t recommend these forntge gym especially if you’re planning on breaking a sweat. They fall out or the sweat messes with the seal on the earbuds. When it senses that the seal in your ears is broken then it pauses. They are not water resistant by any means. Every time i break a sweat with them on they start to glitch and perform random actions. They’re grwat for just listening to music but dont use them if youre very active or have the “smart” functions turned on. Probably wouldn’t buy these again if I had to.

Great sound but ergonomically challenging
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pros: Sound reproduction is very good and I found a good fit with the cushions that were already on the buds when opening the charging holder, although this took a little effort to get a snug enough fit each time I tried using these earbuds. I tried using the other sized cushions, 3 different sizes, and none of them fit better. The Sony app was already installed on my phone as I already own the XM4 over-the-ear headphones, so it was no effort to add this device and choose settings. Cons: After wearing these for awhile, even with very comfortable cushions on the earbud tips, they began to hurt my ear canals. Same thing with wearing them to bed and trying to sleep on my side with them in which was mainly what I wanted to find out: Since I am a side sleeper, would these be comfortable enough to wear with my head turned either to the right or left on the pillow? They aren't. I could not find a comfortable position as, protruding out the ear, these are too bulky. (The Apple Air Pods 2 look like they might be better suited for this purpose and they'll be what I might try next.) Also, with these earbuds, the controls set up in both buds are difficult to master. I found myself having difficulty finding the exact right spot to tap and, of course, as one is adjusting them to fit better, you may be activating some of those controls inadvertently which I was doing often. The over-the-ear headphones are much more user-friendly as far as controls such as advancing to the next song or raising the volume. With these earbuds, however, it is much more of a challenge with their telling you to tap 1, 2, or 3 times. Of course, they allow you to custom control which earbud has which functions for people who are more right or left hand dominant but that mattered little to me when weighed against everything else.

Posted .Hi Chris423,
We apologize if our WF-1000XM5 didn't live up to your expectations. This is certainly not the news we'd like to hear from you. Depending on the headset unit you are wearing, some functions may not be available in the factory settings. In this case, you can change the function assignments to the touch sensors using the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app.
Note:
In the factory settings, the music playback function is assigned to the right headset unit. When listening to music with one ear, if only the right headset unit is worn in your ear, use the touch sensor on the right headset unit to play music. If only the left headset unit is worn in your ear, operate the connected device to play music.

Decent buds but know the shortfalls.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am coming from the previous XM4 earbuds and I have to say that I miss those more than ever. The redesign for XM5 has made the earbuds much more rounded and slightly smaller which means they are harder to get out of the case and get them in your ears. Battery life seems similar to the previous generation but I would recommend getting a protection plan in case Sony bricks this generation with another battery roasting software update. The case is smaller as well but doesn't feel like its lost much if any charge capacity. That said I would love to see Sony and other bud makers come out with a more rugged case as standard or offer their own reinforced outer case for sale right beside the buds. The Sony software is "Ok" plenty of settings to adjust EQ modes, controls, etc... however some bugs like the Speak-to-chat function unpausing music that you stopped yourself or just outright turning off by itself are still very much around. The controls are the same from the previous generation, it would seem that with the redesign the size of the touch zone has shrunk so you can expect to fight for a while to learn where EXACTLY you need to tap to get functions to work correctly. Calls are clear and no one has complained about my voice quality. Overall I am left wishing for the previous generation size and shape for ease of use but otherwise these sound great and have some of the best battery life I have seen in the segment. The software needs refinement and the user will need to practice to get accurate with the controls. Beyond that they are good buds in a market segment flooded with plenty of very bad low quality products.

Posted .Hi TheBlackSkull,
Thanks for commenting. We are thrilled to know about your satisfaction with the exceptional call quality, long-lasting battery life, and amazing sound of your WF-1000XM5. We truly appreciate your input with the design, touch control, and functions through the Sony Headphones Connect app. As for the Speak-to-Chat function, The Speak-to-Chat mode activates when the headset detects the speech of the person wearing the headset, but in rare cases it may activate in response to vibrations caused by devices such as electric toothbrushes, electric massagers, and electric shavers, or by activities such as brushing your teeth, coughing, or humming. In cases where the Speak-to-Chat mode frequently activates by accident, set Speak-to-Chat to “L Sensitivity”.

Not great for apple products IMO
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Sound quality is great, ease of use not so much. Also although they would stay in my ear even when sweating it felt like they would fall out any moment maybe due to the way the earphones go upside down. Maybe because i am biased to using AirPods for years now but just the connectivity with an iPhone for me it was a hassle. Sound quality and customizability was there though.

Posted .Hi OscarR, we're sorry to hear you've had a less-than-ideal experience with the ease of use and fit of your WF-1000XM5 earbuds. We understand that a comfortable and secure fit along with seamless connectivity, are crucial for an enjoyable listening experience.
We recommend trying the different sizes of earbud tips that came with your WF-1000XM5s. Experimenting with these can often significantly improve both the fit and the perceived stability of the earbuds, even when active.
Should you continue to experience any difficulties with connectivity or fit, or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact our technical support team at https://us.esupport.sony.com/support/s/support-contact?language=en_US&category=headphones
Thank you for being a valued Sony customer and for your feedback.

These are music earbuds.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you plan to listen to a lot of music with the XM5, you'll be largely pleased with the sound quality and noise canceling. I bought these after I got my XM4s and when I'm listening to music, I enjoy Sony's sound quality. When I'm at the gym, I'd say I only hear maybe 10-20% of the blaring gym music with noise canceling. The app is decent enough and it's easy to add other Sony hardware. Interestingly, it tracks the music you listen to by time of day but it would be MUCH COOLER if they did it like last.fm. I just wanna know which five albums I listened to the most last month, you know? If you're planning to use these earbuds to make a lot of phone calls, you might be a little frustrated with them. I certainly am. Despite being indoors in a quiet room, I am frequently told over the phone that I sound very distant to them and therefore they cannot hear me. It's even worse when I'm out on my routes with traffic and sirens going off. It's hit or miss. One annoying thing with the case is that the earbuds can still get loose despite being magnetically placed. So despite the case being secure, when I'm ready to use it at the gym, one or both buds have no charge. Now I check before I leave for the gym. Luckily for me, I hate talking on the phone, so I suppose as music earbuds, they're pretty good, but the app could be better and the case is showing some wear. Otherwise, you might be might be rating these as average or fair if you talk on the phone a lot.
