Bluetooth connection with multiple devices is unreliable at times. Audio doesn’t swap consistently when connected to laptops and my phone.

Update Software: Ensure that your headphones are updated to the latest firmware version. Updates often bring improvements and fixes for issues related to connectivity.
Reset Headphones: If connectivity issues persist, consider initializing and resetting your headphones. This operation will reset all device settings to the factory defaults and delete all pairing information. Instructions for initializing can be found in the model-specific Help Guide

Great, Connection takes longer than necessary

There's been a few awkward moments where I immediately play my music or podcast and they haven't actually connected.

We sincerely apologize for the brief but awkward delay between the "Bluetooth connected" voice prompt and the actual functional pairing. That moment where you immediately start your audio only to have nothing play is certainly frustrating, as we aim for a completely seamless experience.
This behavior can sometimes be related to how quickly the source device (phone/laptop) completes its handshake with the headphones. To potentially smooth this out, have you tried these two steps?
Please ensure your headphones are running the latest firmware via the Sony | Headphones Connect App. We frequently issue updates that improve connection reliability and speed.
Sometimes, temporarily removing the XM4s from your device's Bluetooth list ("Forget Device") and then re-pairing them can reset the connection profile for faster linking.

It is the best, and loud and the hardware functionality to stop play when you speak to someone and take it off your head is amazingly smart. The sound and hardware. And definitely a need to be able to connect to two devices. The previous only connected to one, and that was an angering inconvenience. Definitely an additional fix worth the upgrade.

Obviously, the sound is superb. The tap buttons on the side take some time to get used to but are convenient. The Headphones app provides great customizion. Lastly, the reason to go with this version rather than their latest ($399 headphones) is because these still fold and easily fit in your bag/backpack.

Cuts out all those kids while I work from home

My mom sleeps with the TV in the room. These headphones have saved me. I wish they came out in March like they said, so waiting until August was not cool. Only downside is how it handles calls/first device, by cutting off the second device. So if you are in a webinar and a spam call comes in, you are out of audio in your meeting. The noise canceling in great. Sound quality is great.

The first had lasted a long time despite a lot abuse that had occurred due to a lot of air travel. The first model served me well, as is this purchase. I am getting familiar with the new features on these new headphones.
