Great performance, not as comfortable as I'd like.

I used the Bose headsets for a long time, it was not too bad. The Bose headset lasted a long time, but they new Sony ones are way better in terms of performance. Why not give it 5 stars. For one the ear holes are small for my ears and the noise-cancelling could be better. The sound is awesome, but for long flights your ears will hurt a bit and the you will still hear people snoring next to you.

With the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app, check the setting of [Ambient Sound Control]. If it is set to [Wind Noise Reduction] or [Ambient Sound], the effect of noise canceling is reduced. Set it to the noise canceling mode. Please check this link for more details:

Only reason why I upgraded was because I had the protection plan, so doing a swap was no problem. Got these boys on and the sound is great, the new proximity sensor is an amazing add, the ANC is the best, Bluetooth 5.0 is a must nowadays, connecting to two devices is so handy, the Type-C charging is top tier, and having access to either Google Assistant or Alexa is beyond convenient. The reason why there's an asterisk in my title is because of comfort. Because of my weirdly shaped head and ears, these headphones are not comfortable. And I only had them on for the evening. I can't see myself using these guys from the morning until three in the morning. No way. It's a shame, too. I was extremely excited to own these but alas, they are not meant for me. Comfort aside, they're still stellar headphones. Nothing beats the ANC

Owned for 1 year when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Build and sound quality are up there with all of the Bose headsets I've purchased before this set, but I personally feel that these blow Bose and Beats out of the water, especially since I paid less for these than the comprable headphones from other brands. Also, the look of these headphones is a lot better than the others in my opinion. Only problem I've had is getting the built in mic to play nicely with discord on my laptop, whether it's in wired mode with an audio/mic splitter, or in wireless mode.

Mic noise cancelling jittery

However, if you are looking for a headphone that you can use to answer phone calls, these are not the headphones for you. Noise-cancelling seems to work well with receiving but not transmitting sound, so your voice will sound muffled or jittery from the distant end. I tried stability control and multiple configurations, still low-quality voice especially on phone calls. Need to reboot a few times, Bluetooth can also tend to have interference, signal is not as resilient as you would expect on a $380 headphones.

For this, if your smartphone or mobile phone supports both HFP and HSP, set it to HFP. This will provide a better experience while receiving phone calls using the WH-1000XM4s.

I've never worn or even tried any other noise-cancelling headphones so I don't know how they compare. However, I bought these for plane travel and have worn them on numerous flights, both short and very long, and they've fit the bill. They block out a lot of the annoying airplane engine noise as well as the ambient noise of other passengers on the plane. The sound quality is good and they are easy to set up and re-connect to my phone and tablet.

Recent purchase of Sony - WH1000XM4 is a nice upgrade. When the new headphones are on noise cancelling is impressive I barely hear surrounding environment. Audio is crisp and dynamic even when conversations are happening around me.
