Awesome headphones

The noise cancellation is great. While on a plane sitting on the in the emergency row the noise cancellation was impeccable.

Cutting edge ANC, absolutely tortuous design.

If the $400 price tag is worth only the good ANC and decent sound balance, then yes these are pretty good headphones. However, the build quality and the constant issues with the Bluetooth and software make these headphones some of the worst I've ever owned. I find myself continuously having to go back to my $100(now $60) JBL 660 NC headphones for so many use cases. The only benefit I have found with the XM5 headphones over the JBL is the microphone that is very decent at cutting out background talking. The ANC is impressive but most headphones have ANC and they all work pretty well within margin of each other. You should not wear these headphones to do any slight physical activity in as they are incredibly thermally insulated and are very susceptible to sweat and water damage as acknowledged by Sony themselves when they put a warning label in the box telling you to NOT SWEAT ON THEIR HEADPHONES, or they will be damaged. Appalling in this day and age. If you want to replace the horribly uncomfortable and hot ear pads, you will lose any edge of the decent ANC. The battery on these XM5 headphones is about half the performance of my JBL headphones. The headband is much more uncomfortable than any headset I've used. The padding is minimal and the band is made very narrow as a rounded tube making the pressure points very concentrated along the top of the head, very poor design choice. Most headphone bands are flat and wide to avoid these issues. I have to constantly use the app to switch back and forth from quality mode to stability mode for several different apps that will not play sound of on one mode or the other. This is a completely new issue I've never had on any headphones prior. There is a slew of issues with the useability of the app that I'm frankly uninterested in laying out here. All in all Sony apparently believes that it's decent out of the box equalizer settings and ANC is worth the abject torture it is to use these headphones that are somehow cutting edge and 30 years old in design. Pick a different headphone if you're in the market.

Good quality of materials. I like more my B&W PX7 S2, but I was pleasantly surprised when I tried this one. Because I am wasn't fun of Sony - WH-1000XM4 and Sony - WH-1000XM3.

It has great noise canceling feature. I think that Bose does a good job in that aspect, i jut don't think you should completely not hear the outside noise for safety reasons. So with that Sony does it just right with noise canceling.

AirPods work great for business calls and mobility, AirPod Pros are fantastic for audiophiles, noise cancellation. AirPod Max is where it changes for me - the sound is very tinny and artificially boosted. This, combined with the silly case needed for on/off function, the weight and less battery life had me looking elsewhere for a proper over-the-ear headphone. Enter the WH-1000XM5. The Sony App allows for endless customization of sound which lets me tailor my audio experience for the sound I am looking for. This makes me feel better about my experience and the sound is more accurate. Some of the "smart" gps options for sound and noise cancellation are gimmicky and I don't bother with them. Just a tip - the black has a very smooth black finish that shows greasy fingers. I exchanged them for this silver which has a grittier matte finish and doesn't show fingerprints.

My son enjoys useing them everyday when he works out and also the hand gestures that you can wave your hand over the right side of the headphone makes it lot real easy instead of clicking on your phone or pushing the button... I would definitely recommend to anybody that works out and wants noise cancellation to stay focused...

True noise canceling headphones

Too sensitive

However the sound quality was amazing and they were pretty comfortable!
