I have returned these for Airpod Maxes due to my personal hair putting so much oil on them.

I could not hear any background noise while on the plane. It’s definitely a good investment and my first set of ear muffs style headphones.

I had looked at and tested several different headphones and while some were nice, i didnt find any that came close.

The XM5 just feels a little higher in quality

Back is better

The noise cancellation seemed to be subpar and the headphones are huge and do not fold to a compact size like others Sony has released for years. Because they don't fold, the case is also unwieldly. The case is also a dirt magnet. The sound can easily be tailored using the stellar Sony Headphones app and the result sounds like I want it to. But it doesn't seem like an evolution in the WH-1000 train of revisions. Supposedly the XM5 has added more microphones but the extra hardware does not translate to better performance. The voice isolation and sound quality in phone calls is less, but I didn't choose these expensive headphones to make phone calls with. I then purchased the WH-1000MX4 and find that it's a much better headphone, especially in its noise cancellation and compactness. It also uses the Headphones app and I'mm thrilled to move back a version!
