I was incredibly torn betwern the XM5s and XM4s. The latter ate legendary headphones, and I questioned whether the higher price of the XM5s was worth it. I think the 5s justify their highe price for a few key reasons: stronger Acrive Noise Cancellation (ANC), better-than-advertised battery life, larger ear cups, and a noticeably lighter weight. I do still wish the 5s folded up into a more compact carrying size like the 4s, but the superior performance won me over. I also noticed the XM4s sit slightly on the ears. Despite being well padded, they could result in discomfort over time. The XM5s' cups sit fully around my grown man ears and were noticeably more comorrtable. I wore them on a few transatlantic flights and felt fine even after 8+ hours.

As a preface, the Sony WH-1000XM5 are my first set of ANC headphones. I would consider myself a mild audiophile (I have a DAC, AMP, and too many headphones). With that said, everyone's ears are different so take this with an extra pinch of salt. Out of the box experience: The packaging was quite nice. It included a hard-shell carrying case, USB-C to USB-A charging cable, 1.2m long 3.5mm cable, and the headphones. The connection process for new devices is wonky and leaves a bit to be desired. The initial pairing did not work until I installed the Sony Headphones Connect app from the appstore. After this, you have to power off the device then power on and hold the power button for 5 seconds to enter pairing mode (confirmed by a vocal "pairing" from the headphones). The sound signature left a lot to be desired. For a bit of background, my favourite type of headphone is flat/neutral with a balanced sound signature. I enjoy heavy bass in electronic music and am sensitive to loud highs/mids (I get listener fatigue quite fast from it). I enjoy a lot of variety when listening to music an will try most things out. In particular I regularly listen to Classical, Avant-garde, Experimental, Easy listening, Electronic, Contemporary folk, Latin, Jazz, Rock, and some Traditional folk. I don't tend to listen to much Blues, Rap, or Hip Hop. I occasionally listen to mainstream-Pop and Country. Without EQ, the sound signature is very very dark. The bass is very punchy and present, the mids are recessed, and the highs have their edge taken off. I was not a fan of it for anything but electronic tracks with no vocals and heavy bass. Even then, it wasn't particularly amazing. Anything with vocals will sound horrendous (again, with no EQ) as the bass frequencies in voices will be very pronounced. The ANC worked well for me out of the box. For the open mode, I set it to let near voices through and ambient noise out. I use them with eyeglasses but the ANC still seems to work well. They do a particularly good job of filtering out A/C noises, the electronic whine that appliances generate (not all people can hear this), and running water. The ANC tends to struggle with erratic high pitched noises (as I understand it, most ANC systems do). However, it will dull the noise a tad through both the closed back headphone and ANC component. Adaptations Since I was not a fan of the sound profile out of the box, I set up an EQ profile with these headphones. The Sony Headphones Connect app includes an EQ but I found it to be extremely limited in terms of customisability (I did not like any of the presets that were offered) and not very user friendly. Due to this, I set up my own external EQ using AutoEq (on github) as a starting point. After fine tuning it to my preferences, using the headphones became a much much better experience. They sound very good for Bluetooth headphones. For genres where I like more bass, I strongly prefer the Sony headphones over my Sennheiser and prefer the Sony to my Bose. In wired mode, the headphones definitely sound better but no where near as good as my other wired headphones. If I'm attached to a wire, I would rather just switch to another pair of headphones. With that said, they do sound better if you leave the headphones on while connected with a cable. The ANC works well for me. If I use them for noise canceling without music, it can get unsettlingly quiet in the mornings (which is a great thing). Around others, particularly in the kitchen, the headphones do a very good job of dulling and eliminating noises. The pass through function works well in the event of conversation. I am a very quiet eater but these headphones did a great job canceling out all noises while I ate. I don't use these headphones outside, so I do not know how well they perform with nature's noises. The gesture controls included are useful but a bit too involved to be my go to. If I have physical access to my device, I prefer to use that to control the music. However, the pause on take off feature is amazing! It consistently pauses my media any time I have to take my headphones off and resumes right where it left off and soon as I put it on. Simply magic is the only way I have to explain it (the function can be turned off if you don't like/want it).

I'm upgrading from the XM4 headphones. The redesign of the XM5 seems to strengthen the head band that cracked on my XM4s. Wore them on my first flights both on a long trip to the Middle East from LA and a shorter flight from LA to WA. No issues with battery and the noise cancellation is extremely good. Bluetooth connections are flawless. Minor quibble in that the indication for powering on and off are now tones instead of "words", but I think I can get used to that. Overall comfort is A-, I have a big head and sometimes have to adjust the top band after a while to find a different spot. These are GREAT headphones.

Superb sound quality and sumptuous comfort. I wear headphones all night and I love the light weight and generous padding, not to mention the 30-hour battery life. I also appreciate how much more comfortable they are than the Bose Ultras or 45s, which I also tried. I also appreciate that I can disable any type of auto-off or sleep features on these Sony cans, unlike the Bose Ultras that have a sleep mode that I cannot disable.

the mics for phone calls are great & the sound quality is really good, theyre super light it doesnt even feel like theyre on my head, the controls are super accurate and convenient, battery lasts forever, perfect for gym and sweating, the only thing i dont like is how big they look on my small head but still amazing

Major improvement over the XM-4. The Bass is much refined, though not lacking when compared to the XM-4. Noise cancelling is simple the BEST in the market right now. My AirPods Max can’t even compete to the XM-5 in the ANC arena. Form factor is appreciated though I much more appreciated the folding factor of the XM-4, hence the carrying case is considerable bigger than the XM-4. They are slightly lighter in weight than the already light XM-4, so usage for long periods of time has not been a problem; this plus the fact that the ear cushions are wider and the improved leatherette covering on the ear pads makes the XM-5 feel more much comfortable than the competition. Highly recommended!! You won’t be disappointed.

I love these headphones, the ANC is great along with the comfortability and weight. I was having connectivity issues at one point but Sony's firmware updates seem to keep the headphones working properly. The battery life is amazing, I find myself losing track of the last time I even plugged them in. Sound quality is at an all time high when Im listening to Spotify or Youtube content. I would recommend these to anyone willing to shell out a little extra for some TRUE quality.

I absolutely love these headphones! They're super comfy to wear, have amazing sound quality, and the battery life lasts forever. I also appreciate how easy they are to clean and maintain. The noise canceling is really impressive—though one small downside (maybe user error?) is that it sometimes activates when I move my head or bend down. Otherwise, they’re nearly perfect!

After reading tons of reviews on the Bose QuietComfort and the Sony XM5's, I decided to go to BestBuy to purchase the Bose. Fortunately, BestBuy allows you to try the headphones on! After trying both Sony & Bose, I fell in love with the Sony XM5! I love how lightweight and comfortable they are with my glasses. The sound is great and it's cool to be able to touch the right side to hear ambient sounds when you need to. I connect the XM5's to my Samsung TV set to watch TV at night while my husband goes to bed early. NO problems with the Bluetooth connection even on an older Samsung TV! It works seamlessly on my iPhone for AppleMusic too! I haven't taken the time to learn more about them yet, but the basics like volume control are so easy with touch! :) I encourage you to go to BestBuy and try them out if you're undecided! I've had mine a week and just charged them for the first time! Their charging is FAST! I bought the blue pair and they were on sale for $50 off! Watch for a sale on these and then go get them! I'm so happy I did. I love them so MUCH better than in ear buds that hurt my ears. These don't hurt my ears or my head; I wear them for hours without even feeling them! These are great for working and blocking out most all noises.

I believe the hype now. These honestly are the best pair of headphones I’ve used. To me it all comes down to fundamentals: the sound and noise canceling quality are unrivaled. The headphones were comfortable and surprisingly slim for this type of headphone. Given the press about the 1000X line I expected the quality to be great, but I also found some unexpected surprises in the touch interface, notably being able to “cover” your ear cup with your hand to pull in ambient sound and lower the volume so you can hear something or talk with someone for a second. Another surprise was how much customization is at your fingertips with the Headphones Connect app. Any complaints I have are generally pretty trivial: the included USB cable is laughably short and isn’t of much help, and the badges in the Headphones Connect app felt a bit egregious when you clear out a notification dot because you changed an EQ setting. I easily got past both of those knowing the fundamentals are rock solid. For anyone in the market for a pair of premium headphones, I can’t recommend these enough.

Found these to be the most comfortable Bluetooth headphones of the ones I tried. I have no complaints about the sound quality, and the battery lasts a really long time, especially if you don't use noise cancelling (ANC), which I tend not to use. I tried the ANC and it works quite well! It stays connected to my phone even if I'm quite a distance from it. They don't fold up to be as compact as the previous model. Not a problem for me, but it might be a consideration for some. It comes with a nice carrying case, with a compartment for the charging and audio cables. I'm very happy with my purchase!

bought this for work to eliminate noise. anc is really good. notice to less tech savvy people that the headphones has a default feature that it cuts off the music when someone is talking to you so you can hear them. it is a feature though i believe that it should not be on by default, i cannot penalize them for that. also i guess another downside is to turn off that feature, the app is required to be downloaded. for the pros, lighter than a bose qc35. not sure about the new ones. long battery life. comfortable to wear.
