    Sound quality is superb but the auto anc renders these headphones useless. This is especially noticeable in quiet environments and is just super annoying. I'd reccomend the Bose QC45 or the Sony XM4 over these.

      If the effect of noise canceling is not sufficient, please try the following:
      1. Make sure the noise canceling function is turned on.
      2. Adjust the headset into a comfortable position.
      3. The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.
      4. When the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app is turned on, the wearer's actions, like walking or running, are detected.

    Excellent headphones…but hurt the top of my head

    These headphones are everything they are hyped up to be and then some! I love them but after wearing them for long periods of time they end up hurting the top of my head wven after adjustment. They are a bit heavy so they have a decent amount of downward carry.

    Impressive, Next Generation Noise Cancellation

    The Sony WH-1000XM5 Noise Canceling Headphones are fantastic. It has been about 4 year since purchasing my last set of noise canceling headphones and these are lightyears ahead in technology. I was awestruck with the abilities of these headphones along with the wearability and comfort. The headphones are in a soft, yet sturdy case. The look of the headphones is sleek with minimal design features including a small connector between the ear pieces and the head piece. The connector is not only minimal but functional allowing for smooth glide for fit around the head. The whole headset has a soft, foam-like material making wear comfortable even for hours. Speaking of which one can easily get over 24 hours of use on one charge. The case also has a magnetic cover to house the charging cable along with an audio cable to make the headset wired. Setup of the headphones is quick. There is a QR code included as a link to the phone application. The headphones connect via Bluetooth. There is also an opportunity to use 360 Reality Audio with the headphones. 360 Reality Audio is enabled with certain music applications and further information is accessible via the application. During the setup of this feature, one's ears are actually analyzed which seems baffling that we can use this sort of information to enhance a listening experience. The sound quality of these headphones is intertwined with their largest boasting feature, noise cancellation. Overall the sound quality is crisp and clear, with deep, beautiful bass. I find it difficult to articulate sound quality, but simply put these are immersive and beautiful. There are 8 microphones throughout the headphones to enable unprecedented noise cancellation. I initially was unsure what benefit multiple microphones meant with noise cancelation; however, it enables the ability to not only provide proper noise cancellation but also ambient noise settings. There is a setting for full noise cancellation, which does a splendid job. With music playing at lower settings, the surrounding sound is minutely heard while still having clear audio. At medium volume, almost all noise is wonderfully canceled. I believe that these are absolutely fantastic for travel, relaxation, or studying. I would have loved to have these in the recent years while studying for exams. Instead of just different levels of noise cancellation the headphones allow for ambient settings. Where you may select for surrounding ambient noise to be allowed through. While traveling this allows for mild hearing of sounds around oneself that are vital to safety. Furthermore, you may activate a setting that allows for ambient voices to come through – probably the craziest feature (and coolest) in my opinion. With this activated, voices are still transmitted through the headphones while other ambient noise is filtered. For myself, I like to hear people around myself at times and this allows for it – or keeping an ear out for something my wife may say that otherwise would have been canceled out making a not happy wife! There is a setting that may be activated to turn off audio for 15sec upon hearing the listener's voice. This allows for communicating without removing the headphones, ultimately this is spectacular if on the go. The headphones also boast learning different ambient environments and automatically adjusting to the location as they learn the level of noise surrounding oneself. The other enjoyable aspect of the headphones is the hand control. The earpiece will accept commands. Two taps to start/pause music. A hand over the headphone will dampen audio sound and enhance ambient noise to allow for quickly hearing the surrounding world (fantastic for travel announcements). A swipe forward will skip a song, swipe back to repeat, swipe up to increase volume, and a swipe down to decrease. Enjoyable functionality with just the movement of one's hand. Two taps will also pick up a call, which has crisp clarity and per friend report on the other side of the call the 4 microphones for user voice work are spectacularly being easily heard even in busy environments. Truthfully, to the average user as myself it is a mystery as to how the multiple microphones with an integrated noise canceling processor works, but I know that this technology absolutely does work. Quite impressive overall. Fabulous sound quality of the headphones, including the 360 Reality Audio feature, while having impeccable noise cancellation.

    Do not purchase XM5 - Massive Design Flaw

    Massive design flaw, just with a normal use for 3 months of use, right hinge on the headphones was broken, when reached out to Sony, they do not cover it under warranty and the repair cost is almost the same price of the headset $300. I have XM4 for over couple of years and they work absolutely fine. These new ones are bad and sony customer service is even more bad.

    Do Not buy!!

    Bought a pair in December 23 2024 three months later the frame broke. Just taking them off and on. Under warranty you would think no warranty. They work great but are not meant to last poor craftsmanship.

      These lightweight headphones are beautifully finished in newly developed soft fit leather. This material fits snugly around the head with less pressure on the ears while keeping out external sounds. Our noiseless design with stepless slider, seamless swivel and hanger, and silent joints, makes WH-1000XM5 a pleasure to wear.

    Best Universal Over-The-Ear Headphones Yet

    First of all, this is my first review of any product, but I felt compelled to after using these headphones for three days now. Having owned a plethora of headphones ranging from the best of Skullcandy, to Beats by Dr. Dre, JBL, and now Sony, I can honestly say that Sony has them all beat at this price-point. Sound Quality: Relenting audio quality among all genres. I listen to various genres ranging from EDM/Trap/Future Bass to Hip-Hop, Country, Rock, and even choral pieces by Eric Whitacre. These headphones never fail to deliver. The highs are crisp, yet not unbearable. The mids aren't "muddied" as seen in many of the rivals, and with Sony's built in "True Bass" EQ, Bass heads will be very pleased. Overall, the quality and equalization of voice to music is pristine straight out of the box. Within the Sony App, there's a built-in application that has presets, but as always, you're free to find the sound that best suits you. Battery Life: The Battery life is remarkable for everything that you're getting. I played Hi-Fi music for almost 28 hours with full ANC on and it handled in wonderfully. Once I charged it, it took a remarkably short period of time before it was back to 100% and ready to go. If you're in an area where it's already quiet, there's an option to turn minimize or turn the ANC off entirely which prolongs the battery life even more. Connectivity: Seamless to all of my devices. Both of my phones showcased the option for LDAC and it truly does make a difference, especially in situations where the music is quiet. The distance I can travel from my headphones hasn't been put to the test truly as the host device is always right with the headphones. Sony App: As previously mentioned, these headphones come with the Sony App that allows you to update the headphones, manage devices, and setup the EQ to your personal preference, including the amount of bass that you like. It's intuitive, light, and extremely manageable. You can also toggle multiple functions, my favorite of which is "pause when removed". Whenever I take them off, the headphones automatically stop playing the music, to which they immediately start back up when put back on. Wearability: As previously mentioned, I wore these headphones for 28 hours straight and had absolutely no discomfort. Packaging is easy in the case supplied, and the headphones themselves are highly customizable for comfortability and total sound enhancement. It also seamlessly connects to google connect and to my amazement, has the ability to perform a multitude of tasks without ever touching your phone. Durability: I haven't had them for too long, and I'm not a paid reviewer, so I don't plan on intentionally trying to break these headphones. With that being said, the band is extremely flexible and the build feels solid enough while maintaining a reasonable level of weight. The only negative with these headphones is that you have to subscribe to particular music providers such as Tidal to experience the immersive 360-degree audio. They give you a quick trial of what it offers, but I have yet to fully evaluate the feature as I'm personally not a fan of the limited selections on the platforms given. I hope that they bring this feature to Spotify. Overall, for the $400 range, these headphones are extremely versatile for multiple styles and preferences. If you're looking to stay below $400 but don't want to get boxed in with the factory EQ settings and seemingly low-quality sound, these are the way to go for streaming, listening, or on the go audio. Hopefully this helps!

      It is true that when the headset is connected to an AC outlet or computer, all operations such as turning on the headset, registering or connecting to Bluetooth devices, and music playback cannot be performed. The WHXM5 works well with Mac, Windows 10, and Windows 8.1 computers.

    noise cancelling doesn't work well, even with the sony suggestions. Sound quality is okay. Material for ear pads are comfortable but are poor quality. Definitely not worth $400+.

    Not as good as the old

    I've been a Headphone enthusiast for upwards of 18 years now. I'm not one to believe I'm an expert by no means, but these just don't meet the bar set by their predecessor. I believe the sound quality is great however, unless the product I got was defective, these just don't cancel sound nearly as good. I would recommend the WH-1000XM4 over these any day. I'd say while the competition has been close for a couple years now, these headphones just don't compete. I'd recommend the older version or Bose's.

    I liked the noise canceling feature although when I’m getting a call it sounds like in far away. I tried to use this for team meetings with an application for calls. I was told i sound far asay. I checked the settings and jg was all correct with the audio and sound and mic all from headset and did not work. Have to use an ecternal mic. I was hoping i can hse while traveking without carrying external mic to work. Also for travel its bulky to travel unless they are around your neck in the airport

    Do NOT BUY Expensive pile of junk.

    First few weeks this headset was awesome but now after 3-4 weeks of use it is horrible. Recently it started disconnecting every 30 seconds. While watching a video on my iPhone or pc or laptop it disconnects every 30 seconds or a minute and pauses the video. I even fixed it with one device thinking that it was hunting between different devices but still no luck. Became an expensive pile of junk.

The communication between the devices will be poor if there is an obstruction between the unit and the connected device. Try the following:

Choosing the correct Sound Quality Mode improves communication between your headphones and your mobile device.     It's good for an AirPods Max alternative for price and features but wont be easy as the airpods with the seemles apple ecosystem

    Absolutely horrible. The headphones do not work easily and are bringing in amplified noise to the listener from outside too distracting.

      Hi MichaelA, we're sorry to hear that you have an issue with the noise canceling feature of your Sony unit. If you are hearing amplified noise from outside, Please turn off the Ambient Sound Control or turning on the Noise Canceling function. You can do this through the Sony Sound Connect app. Please make sure that the headphones are worn properly. If there is too much space between your ear and the headphone earbud, the Noise Canceling function may not work effectively. Please follow this link for more details:

    Would often crackle, loose connection, speak to chat was muffled. People who say these are the best, are probably only saying that because they are embarresed to admit they got ripped off. This review was left after owning two pairs with the same issue. I though perhaps it was just one pair that was off, but no. My biggest conplaint though is the lack of good bass. Would never recommend. I returned both.

This is definitely not the experience we'd like you to have. We'd love to help you troubleshoot your problem and turn your experience around.

      We do have troubleshooting steps to address the above issues. First, please ensure the software is updated to version 1.1.3. You can check and verify the software by launching the headphones connect app. You may also reset or initialize the headphones.

      Resetting:
      Connect the headset to an AC outlet
      Press the power button and the NC/AMB button simultaneously.
      The headset will be reset.
      The device registration (pairing) information and other settings are retained.
      If the headset does not operate correctly even after resetting, initialize the headset to restore factory settings.
