Read on... Background: I am a bit of an audiophile. Love my IEMs (Sennheiser IE600, Moondrop Variations, Fiio FH9), my DAP (Fiio M11 Plus ESS), and my music service (Tidal). Neat little transportable package, big & meticulous sound. Really wanted to complement that with nice Bluetooth OTE cans with strong noise cancellation, "good enough for me" sound quality, for flights and "Calgon, take me away" moments... My Experience: The first time I listened to the XM5s, my shoulders slumped. I had tried the XM4s a year ago but returned because the sound quality just wasn't there. Not close. Thought "here we go again" with the XM5s: River-mud thump-thump in the bass, recessed and murky mids, and no definition or clarity up top. Warm as a blanket, but unlistenable. So I started tinkering (OK, extensively) with the EQ in the App, trying to get the frequency curve to match my IEMs (all pivoting around the Harman Target). Ah hah! Try this, left to right in the Headphones App EQ: +1, +4, +6, +6, +8, Clear Bass @ 3 (season to taste). Then give yourself a couple of days for driver and brain burn-in. Now: Love these... love. Exactly the complement I wanted, sound beyond what I had hoped for. Turns out the XM5s are some awesome hardware, Sony just destroys the native tuning, and none of the stock EQ profiles come close to correcting that. In this case, EQ isn't a matter of tuning to personal preference rather undoing all the bad decisions. That done, these sound terrific, definitely keepers, and they will get A LOT of use. Connections to multiple devices comes up short

The convenience of auto play / pause when taking headphones off and on is a positive. Connecting to multiple devices is confusing, I have it connected to my Fold 5, ipad, and computer. Switching between devices can freeze the app. Need to turn the headphones off and on manually to get them to reconnect. Bose can connect to multiple devices at the same time much easier. I was hoping that the positives of the Bose and these Sony's would be combined in these.

These Completely Spoiled Me

I no longer want to listen to music in my car or with other headphones. That's because the sound quality of these is just that good. I feel immersed in the music like I'm in the studio with the artists. The music has much more depth and nuance to it, and I can hear parts of songs that I would have never noticed with cheaper headphones. I really like the software and how easy they make it to customize the audio to your preferences (bass, treble, etc) - even a complete newbie can use it. The one concern I had before buying these was the pressure you feel in your ears from active noise canceling. I felt that a lot when trying on Bose QuietComfort headphones, but that's never been an issue with these. And unlike Bose QC and other headphones, you can also turn off the active noise canceling if it bothers you. TL;DR I can't recommend these headphones enough. If you're on the fence, just send it.

Love these for everyday and workouts

I was previously using the beats which I also love but decided it was time for an upgrade. The sound quality is great, as well as the battery life. They don’t recommend you to use these while working out because of the sweat potentially being able damage the headphones but so far I’ve no issues and I don’t believe that my sweat would soak it that thoroughly. Really tempted to get the white ones as well.

The noise cancellation on them is absolutely superb! Sound quality is phenomenal, ease of use and functionality off the charts. It is susceptible to smudges if you have kind of oily hands. The XM5’s improve in every way that matters when it comes to sound and noise cancellation. The cups are deeper so they fit better. The connection is better than previous models, with seamless switches between devices working flawlessly. The accompanying app is great for nailing your specific sound settings. Oh and they work without having to be powered on via AUX.

Love These Headphones But Quirks Prevent 5/5 Stars

Owned for 3 months when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I absolutely love these headphones, they do exactly what I wanted; block out ~90% of the noise around me with a single button. I wear these primarily while I'm at work, which is a large warehouse with lots and lots of noise, and these have no problem blocking it all out. This is where some of the quirks begin however. The first quirk is the microphones in the earcups; they are very sensitive to loud, high-pitched sound, like a piece of tape being ripped from its roll for example. These high-pitch sounds have a tendency to cut through the noise-cancelling and cause some sound tearing in the headphones when that happens. Unfortunately, I often use tape at work, so every time I do, I have to rotate my head away from the tape as I'm pulling it to prevent hearing a loud sound tear while my headphones are on. I'm sure that this is just a quirk and not something that most people will experience, but it's worth pointing out. The other major quirk I have experienced is the material the ear cups are made from. It's a kind of rubbery-leather material that, quite frankly, I don't like. I find that even light physical activity causes the area around the ears to moisten up and run hot when I'm wearing these because of that material. A kind of cloth material would have been a better choice in my opinion, but I'm sure Sony had a reason to chose what they did use. Additionally, because this material has no grip to it, I find that my glasses routinely slide down my face because the headset press-fits to your head, which causes the glasses to be pushed forward because there's nothing for them to grab onto and stay in place. Again, likely something that most people will not experience, but it definitely is something to know about. Overall however, these are the best headphones I have ever owned, and I have owned many over the years. If you're on the fence about buying them, just do it. Worst comes to worst, you return them, but I bet you won't!

Connecting them were effortless. Sound quality is impeccable, I really enjoy the touch setting on the headphones to turn the volume up/down, skip, outside noise. I really enjoy these headphones. They are easy to clean. Above everything, they have an extremely great battery life and charge time. I would but over and over and over again. If you're on the fence, these are the ones!
