We are sorry to hear about your concern with the sound quality of your Sony wireless noise canceling headphones. We can isolate this issue by playing several different music and use different sources. When playing music, if the headset and the transmitting Bluetooth device are connected via an HFP or HSP Bluetooth connection, switch the Bluetooth connection to A2DP with the connected device. Despite your concern, it's good to hear that you still like them, especially the noise canceling feature. With our WH-1000XM5 headphones, you can enjoy magnificent sound quality which is engineered to perfection and have a battery life that can last up to 30 hours with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback). With 8 total microphones, these headphones are our biggest step forward in noise canceling technology. For everyday convenience, just Speak-to-Chat and Quick Attention mode stop your music and let in ambient sound.

Thank you for sharing your hones review of the WH-1000XM5. We are very sorry that the Noise Canceling (ANC) did not meet your high expectations, especially feeling that the older XM4 offered a better, more complete seal.

We completely understand your focus on achieving ultimate silence. If your priority is the absolute best noise-canceling performance, we would recommend looking into the WH-1000XM6, as it is our latest model and features a new QN3 processor and 12-microphone array. This hardware is designed to deliver a noticeable improvement in overall ANC and is specifically engineered to handle the mid-to-high frequency noises, like voices, that you mentioned.

Before upgrading, please ensure you have disabled Adaptive Sound Control in the Sony | Headphones Connect app. This feature often automatically lowers the ANC, which can create the "lax" muffling effect you described.

If the effect of noise canceling is not sufficient, please try the following:
Make sure the noise canceling function is turned on.
Adjust the headset into a comfortable position.
The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, offices, near air-conditioning, and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices.
When the Adaptive Sound Control on the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app is turned on, the wearer's actions, like walking or running, are detected. The noise canceling function is automatically adjusted and the Ambient Sound Mode may be activated according to these actions.
To make the most of the noise canceling function, turn off the Adaptive Sound Control, and try to turn on the noise canceling function manually when you need it.
