Sounds great, good battery and features

It sounds great, looks good, has great battery-life and a nice set of features. It pretty much has everything I was looking for. As for the design, I like it. Simple, clean, and it works. Everything is black, and they just kept the essential buttons on the front/top. While not really for me, there are also some nice LEDs on the sides that can be used. They are not something I will really use, but they are done very well, and, honestly, they look pretty nice. Not overbearing. The speaker is definitely built well, solid, and, if I have to say, pretty big. Perhaps a little big for my needs, though still very portable, but the extra size (and sound) will give me a little more flexibility. Lastly, I really appreciate the water and dust protection. I am not looking to abuse it, but it is nice to have a little piece of mind. The speaker just sounds great. Mids are clear, highs are crisp, and there is nice bass. It is all clean, not muddled, and I had no issues with distortion. It also has some power and can fill a space. That is “as is,” but you can also use Sony’s standard “Mega Bass” for a boost there, and dig a little deeper into sound modes if you use their Sony Music Center App. I think it is worth the time to dial it in. While sound, looks, and design are probably what first draws people to a product, me included, I am very impressed with the battery and the connectivity. Battery life is rated for 30 hours (which seems accurate to me so far) and it has “quick charge” which will get you 3 hours in 10 minutes. Both killer features (there is also a battery saver feature). Further, you also have to ability to charge a phone (or other device) from the speaker itself with a USB on the back. This would all just about be perfect for me IF they allowed the speaker itself to be charged via USB as well. It is not really a knock, but the standard DC power plug was a little disappointing. So close Sony, so close. Further, while I realize most people will simply use Bluetooth, and it works perfectly for me, I really appreciate all the connectivity they offer. The ability to plug a USB drive in and play is a great add, but for me the inclusion of a standard audio line in is the big winner. Just a lot of flexibility there, something that is getting harder and harder to find. Beyond that, there is a hookup for a mic, and you can hook up a guitar and use it as an amp. I have no clue how well these work, but, again, just more adds and options. Not a bad thing. Ultimately, there is a lot to like here, and I do. While my main use case is not “party speaker,” I can see how this would be absolutely perfect for that. Beyond that, though, it is just a real good speaker that sounds great and comes with a LOT of nice features.
