Customers are enthusiastic about the Xperia 10 Plus, particularly its camera, which takes great pictures. They also appreciate its affordable price, long battery life, and compact size. The phone's fast performance and attractive design are additional highlights. Now That's a Tall Phone

The Sony Xperia 10 Plus is a strangely tall, narrow phone that takes some getting used to.
But that size has a purpose. Sony has decided to distinguish itself from other phone manufacturers by focusing on the thing Sony does best - entertainment. The 21:9 screen on the Xperia, which matches the ratio of most commercial films, brings an uniquely immersive experience to watching movies and similar video on a phone. It's like IMAX on a phone.
The 10 Plus is Sony's new entrant in the world of mid-range phones. It slots well below the Xperia 1. The back is metal instead of glass. The resolution is "HD+" instead of 4k with HDR. The processor is a Qualcomm 636 instead of the 855. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 5 instead of 6. But most other things are about the same.
The phone looks and feels like a quality handset. It may be mid-range, but it does not come across as cheap.
In terms of OS, it ships with a current version of Android Pie (9) with a fairly unobtrusive skin by Sony. I appreciated that Sony let me decide which, if any, of their recommended apps to install. Coming from a Pixel, I also like to stay pretty close to stock Android, and the Xperia does that. The most immediately noticeable differences to me were what Sony calls Side Sense, which lets you easily access favorite apps with one hand, and some tweaks to the camera software. Note, you can take photos in the 21:9 format.
Image quality is pretty good, although I think it lags a little in low-light settings. The phone features dual rear cameras at 12MP and 8MP, so the popular Bokeh effect is there. The front camera offers 8MP. Video can record in 4k, but focus can be a little slow with motion. Everything about the cameras seems good enough. Again, it doesn't compete evenly with the premium phone cameras, but it holds up quite well.
Overall performance is better than I anticipated with the 636 processor. I presume that is due partly to the 4GB of RAM. Regardless, I haven't found anything that makes the phone stutter. It operates quickly and smoothly across the board.
Sound out of the dual speakers on the bottom is decent. It can get fairly loud. Of note, the phone does have a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The volume buttons are on the right side of the phone. They are small and not very tactile. I would have liked them to stand out a bit more. The power button is higher up on the right side, and likewise doesn't stand out much. While this makes for a trim profile, it is a bit annoying in terms of daily use.
The phone also has a fingerprint reader on the side. I thought this would be a poor placement, it feels natural and works very well. I have not had any issues with it recognizing my print.
I'm a 5'9" guy. With "normal" jeans, the phone fits in my front pocket - but just barely. The top is near the edge of the pocket. Sitting is also ok.
The phone has a larger bezel across the top rather than notch. This helps the phone look more sleek. It also makes the 21:9 aspect ratio a bit more intimidating. I'm not a fan of notches, but that might have been a better option this time. The bottom of the screen shows only the on-screen home button; there is no back button on the main screen, although it does pop up when you open something within an app or settings.
The phone comes with 64GB of onboard memory, but it accepts micro-SDXC cards up to 512GB. The access door is on the left side of the phone and is easy to remove. The SIM card slot is also accessed with the same side door.
BT 5.0 works well with various headphones. The phone also has the NFC feature. It charges with a USB-C cable, which I greatly appreciate.
At the end of the day, I like this phone. However, I'm still not a fan of the form factor. I'd much rather Sony cut half an inch off and go with more typical aspect ratio. Except for when I want to watch a movie. Then, I love it.
I think how much you love it will depend on how frequently you watch movies on a phone. If that's your thing, the Xperia series is for you. Even if not, this is a nice, smooth phone that takes a little time to get used to, but you do get used to it. And if you're tall, then it may even feel more natural than a typical phone.

I've had my Xperia10 for about 6 months. It is a good phone for some one that does not care for any flashy features or wanting to have the latest and greatest.
This is my first Sony phone I've owned and really like it. For it being on the lower mid grade side I give it a 4 star overall. I do have some Goods and Bads for this phone.
Processor: It is a little on the slow side compared to the flagships but after a while I got used to it. After a couple of updates it still not too bad on the speed. After a couple of updates the phone really didn't get affected on the speed, it did slow a little bit down but I am able to live with it.
The only thing is that it does freeze occasionally, maybe once or twice a week. I have to turn off the screen (put it to sleep) and turn it back on so that i can continue scrolling through the internet (sites, youtube, etc) and when I'm texting consistently (it freeze as if it can not keep up).
Also, I listen to Pandora (through bluetooth) all day at work (9-10hrs) and the volume sometimes does not work when the screen is asleep. I will need to wake it up and then adjust the volume. For the processor, I rate the processor a 3.5 out of 5.
Camera: The camera is really good. My previous phones where the Galaxy series (flagships not the watered down versions) and even after the updates it still takes really nice pictures. The self camera even takes better pictures than my wife's GS9. Also the rear main camera takes good pictures in low lighting. I really do not have any complaints in this area. I rate the camera a 4.5 out of 5.
Features: This phone really doesn't come with many features out of the box. It doesn't even have a calculator, but it is between basic and flagship. I really don't care for many features, especially ones that I won't ever use, but I really didn't have to download many apps to accommodate the features it was missing. This phone really can do what you want it to do, within in limits, and will impress you. I rate the features a 4 out of 5.
Memory: The phone I bought has 64gb internal memory, which maybe 12gb's of it was already used with what the phone has stored in stock for. The only thing I don't like (or don't know if I figured out how to) is transferring internal storage to external storage. I liked how, on my Galaxy, I was able to transfer miscellaneous things from the internal memory into the external memory to free up some internal space. I currently have 30gb used up and that is with a 32gb external sd card. According to the menu they are items that are mainly downloads. IDK if I am able to transfer them to the sd card. I rate the memory a 4 out of 5.
Exterior looks and Screen quality: I always buy cases for all my phones, but the feel of this phone without a case is great. It has an eloquent look and feel to where it looses its great looks with a phone case. I personally think it looks and feels better than then most flagship phones. Slim "squared" design is what attracted me to this phone and the fact that it does not have a chin is great. the top "forehead" is not too bad but could be a bit smaller. the 21:1 ratio is awesome and looks really, really nice. I definitely do not have any complaints on the quality and design of this phone. I rate this a 5!
Overall I will rate this phone a 4.5 out of 5. This phone is great for anyone not wanting to spend $1,000 on a phone and wants something that's less pricey and still be able to hold its own.
SONY, PLEASE USE THIS PHONES DESIGN AS A TEMPOLATE FOR ALL YOUR CELLPHONES, INCLUDING YOUR FLAGSHIP!.

This is sony's larger midrange smartphone. First things first, make sure you download the latest updates before you start using the phone as that might make your experience better. This is a tall phone, 6.5" with 21:9 wide display. This does come in handy with the split screen multitasking as well as for cinematic video viewing. It comes with 12MP and 8MP dual back camera with 2x optical zoom, supporting 4K video recording, while the selfie camera is 8MP. The phone does have headphone jack and the audio resolution is great, given Sony has this experience. 4GB of RAM and Snapdragon 635 helps with good performance of this phone. It comes with 3000mAh battery with great optimization, plus Sony provides 2 Stamina modes to help with the extended battery life. There is a fingerprint scanner to the right of the device for fast unlocking, but this might not be convenient for left handed use. The build quality is great. Other notable features include the NFC pairing, USB C port for charging and data transfers, FM radio, and the standard micro SD slot. This phone also supports streaming games from your PS4. I haven't had any issues with the phone being tall and fitting in the jeans and sitting, it seems to be ok. Overall, this is one of the best midrange smartphone for people who are on budget but want all the bells and whistles for everyday use and I would defintely recommend it.

The first phone I've loved in years!

A tiny bit of context so you can decide if you should listen to me. I don't like smartphones. I think they are poorly designed, made of inappropriate materials for their purpose, lack basic features, put form way over function, etc. I consider almost all flagship phones from around 2016-onward to be poorly designed junk that are produced to look good in marketing photos and appeal to trend obsessed writers rather than be useful for regular people in real life. So when I buy a phone I shop midrange in the $300 bracket, unlocked, and buy it outright. I buy Android because it is slightly less terrible than iOS, but I wouldn't say I like it. I have to spend 30 minutes when I get it getting rid of all the Google bloat and turning off all the spyware - and I always have keep my eye out for them reinstalling their garbage like Photos, Drive, Chrome, etc or reenabling Spy Assistant during updates. Because I hate phones so much when I buy a phone it is a purely utilitarian act. I shop based on price and features. Nothing more.
It was time for a new phone and I decided on the Xperia 10. I was interested in the aspect ratio and the HiRes music features. To my surprise I don't just tolerate this phone, I actually like it. I don't think I've liked a phone since maybe 2009 or 2010. It feels like Sony actually put some work into trying to make something for people to use and I really appreciate that.
The first thing I love is the screen. Phones are often too wide. iPhones are the worst about that. This phone is actually the right size and I can fit my whole hand around it. Not only that it actually shows more vertical content with its height - that's something I've never seen. Phones usually just scale up linearly, or change the aspect ratio only conservatively and then scale the UI up with the phone hardware resulting in a bigger phone that shows the same amount of stuff. Because the phone is thin but tall you actually see more on the screen than you would with a phone at the same height but a standard ratio. So not only does it fit better in your hand, you get more vertical scrolling space, which is what phones are used for. This is called design - thinking about people using your product. I hadn't seen it in so long I was actually shocked.
Next up are the materials. The back of the phone is plastic and the plastic wraps around the sides. This is how a phone should be designed because contrary to what people in California might think people actually carry their phones around out in the world. The plastic - which is an attractive soft touch matte finish - feels like you could knock it around a bit without no ill effects. It feels like it would flex rather than dent or shatter. This is called design.
The phone has hardware support for HiRes auto including FLAC and DSD and a headphone port. I listen to a lot of music and have my collection as FLACs ripped from CD and some HiRes FLACs and DSDs purchased online. This phone plays all of my music, regardless of the bitrate or format, and it all sounds amazing. This is the absolute best sounding consumer device I have ever used for playing music. Apple and Google both ship phones with some HiRes support and then only support Bluetooth which uses lossless compression. Sony anticipated that people who might purchase a phone with HiRes music support might also want to be able to use headphones capable of reproducing that quality. This is called design.
The finger print reader is on the side,*exactly* where your thumb or index finger are when you pick up the phone. You never have to think about it, or do some finger gymnastics, or wait for some gimmicky face ID stuff. You pick up the phone and it securely unlocks. This is called design.
I could go on and on. The dual cameras are great and capture really stunning bokeh photos. Its not all roses - the lowlight performance is the worst I've had in a while. But in decent light it is the best I've ever used (remember - I only buy midrange.) And the camera app Sony ships is very good. It is chock full of useful features and actually has a tutorial and documentation to teach you how to use it. The phone can take pictures based on your smile or a gesture which is an extremely useful feature. And the 21:9 size photos are able to capture almost panorama-sized pictures which is very cool. I was able to get a full length picture of my christmas tree without having to stand across the street. The music app is *excellent* and great for playing my 250+ album collection. And speaking of that collection, the phone has a MicroSD card slot or else I wouldn't be able to carry that collection with me.
Overall everything about the phone Sony could control is pretty great and much better than I expected. Of course I had to spend 30 minutes de-googling it when I got it and triple checking my privacy settings and had to disable some of their apps 2 or 3 times. But once I had everything set its all been smooth sailing. My one missing star is not because of the phone but because of Android. If the phone had an option to opt-out of the Google ecosystem on start and if I could rely on it to keep the things I've disabled disabled I would give it 5 stars. I like what Sony did, Google is of course totally scummy.
If you need a phone and if you are a music or photo lover and want something that you can purchase outright this is the way to go. Friends don't let friends go into debt to the tune of $800-$1000 to buy an overpriced piece of junk that will be outdated in a year, will break if you don't sheath it in a laughably ugly case, and you can't even plug headphones or an SD card into. Do yourself a favor and if you haven't yet get off the flagship phone treadmill - its a fool's game. Get this phone instead. I heartily recommend it.

I’m always open to trying out new phones so I was excited to try this one out. I’m not as into the nitty gritty tech specs that may be important to others so I base my opinions on what fits my needs. I need a great camera, decent battery life, easy to use OS with beneficial features meant to make my busy life a little bit easier. This phone comes close to or meets my needs. Battery life so far has been great (meaning I don’t have to stress out if I can’t recharge during the day). Watching videos on the screen more than meets my needs. The picture looks crisp and the colors are as I’ve come to expect from pricier options. The camera falls a little short of what I’m used to. It’s not terrible but it’s definitely not one of my favorite features of this device. If the camera is important to you this phone may make you rethink your purchase so it’s definitely something to consider. The fingerprint sensor works well but it took a little getting used to it being on the side. No real issues with it recognizing my fingerprint though so that’s always a great thing. Ultimately this is an adequate option for budget conscious buyers wanting some great features without breaking the bank.

To make a long story short, unless you're a gamer, you'll never notice the difference between this phone and top-shelf phone. Performance is fantastic for the price and the display is extremely sharp! Construction is solid and doesn't feel like a toy like a lot of 2nd-tier phones do!
Sony opted to go with a new form factor - 21:9 as the 18:9 and 16:9 phones were getting too wide to handle in one hand - the only other direction to go for a larger screen is up!
In case you're wondering what 21:9 is - it's the same ratio that most widescreen movies are shot in. If you watch movies on your phone , this is a welcome change!
The only thing missing that I would have liked to have seen on this phone is wifi-calling. At work the signal in my office is abysmal , so I typically use WiFi calling to ensure that I get all calls that come through. I won't be able to do that on this phone, but so far every call I've gotta has come through.
I'm going to use this phone a bit more before making it my daily driver, but at this point I think it has earned a spot in my collection to be used on a regular basis!

The Xperia 10 Plus is a large long phone but is easily manageable due to the narrow design. It has a one-handed mode that can be activated to assist with single handed operation but I prefer the standard screen. The LCD screen quality is pretty good. Although it's no comparison to OLED, contrast is good and the display is sharp and crisp. Quality is pretty nice with displaying photos and video. Screen responsiveness is good but sometimes touches do not register, especially if any part of my hand is making contact with other areas of the screen. Sometimes, this is unavoidable during one hand use due to the narrow design. There is no raise to wake feature and waking the phone requires a button press.
Sound is pretty good from the speakers and there is a 3.5mm earphone jack available. The fingerprint scanner works flawlessly and always unlocks the phone on the first try. Voice quality during calls is pretty good on both ends. Battery life is so-so. I can get a full day of use per charge but that’s about it. I can’t stretch it to multi-day use. The included charger is standard, not fast charge. Overall build quality of the Xperia 10 Plus feels reliable although a bit on the lower end.
Like most aspects of the phone, performance is good but not great. It's sufficient enough for most day to day tasks but can get laggy at times. I had to remind myself this is a mid-tier phone. Comparing it to phones like my S10+ are unfair. Comparison to another mid-tier phone, the iPhone XR, is also unfair. The XR has exceptional performance and hardware by comparison but the XR also costs several hundred more than this phone. The XR may be considered “mid-tier” by Apple standards but not in the Android world. Phones like the Moto G7 or Z3 are a better and more fair comparison for the Xperia 10 Plus.
Camera quality is generally good but exposure on the rear-facing camera can be hit or miss at times. This is more noticeable in bright light or heavily contrasty scenes. The front camera is good during direct use but not quite as sharp or clear in third-party apps like Instagram or Facebook as some competing models. I don't know if the apps are optimized for use on certain phones but it's a noticeable difference in quality. Instagram also seems to have an issue with the unique ratio of this phone which sometimes causes photos to appear abnormally large and content to cut off at times.
I have the latest system updates applied but I’m experiencing an ongoing issue with bluetooth connectivity. My music frequently clips out during use with both car audio and wireless ear buds. I initially thought the issue may have been limited to the car audio system until the same occurred with the wireless buds. I’ve tried some initial generic troubleshooting but can’t eliminate the issue so far.
Overall, this is an okay mid-tier phone but it has a few flaws. Performance is about what I expected at the price point and is acceptable for the most part. Sound, camera and extras are good enough but don't have any wow factor. The problem is that the competition is so fierce, even among older offerings like the S8+ which can be found similarly priced but offer so much more. It's really hard to recommend this over some of similarly priced phones available. The bluetooth is currently my biggest issue and I'm hopeful it's software related and can be resolved rather quickly. Otherwise, it would be a major dealbreaker.
