People raved about how great this was, entirely neglecting to point out that it was a game that largely focused on shooter-like mechanics. On a console. No thank you? PC master race.

I got the game because of the really great reviews, unfortunately it is primarily an online game and pvp is really not my thing. Controls take some adjustment.

Kids liked this game but it's not a contender for a favorite. Kind of pricey for an average game. Lost interest in playing this pretty quickly.

    Fantastic Shooter for Everyone

From the get go, you're thrown into a very different realm from your average run of the mill shooter. It is a Third Person shooter, with a very Fresh vibe. There are a variety of different weapons available and the list gets constantly updated. From your Standard Shooter style weapons, to more extreme weapons, such as Paint Buckets, Rollers and Paint Brushes. There's always something new to work out and get into. The main Story mode is a Great Glorified tutorial, plays along the lines of a 3D Platforming Mario Game (Think Mario Galaxy) but with a Shattershot. It gives you a good feel for the mechanics and strategies in the real meat of the game, the Multiplayer. The Multiplayer mode offers various different modes. From the more casual friendly Turf Wars (Cover the most amount of the field with your color ink before time runs out) to the Ranked modes, like Splat Zones, Tower Control and so on. The stages and modes go on rotation every few hours, so its not as hectic as the voting process you'd see on other online games. There are even regional competitions every other week called Splatfests, which splits the country to compete over whose tastes reign supreme. Cats vs Dogs, Rollercoasters vs Waterslides, Rock vs Pop. The game has received a number of Downloadable content, but it's all free and truly enhance the gameplay. Nintendo's doing DLC right with their games. Did I mention that you can customize your Squidling in fresh gear? Well you can. Honestly the only downfall is really just the lack of a voice chat option. If it had that, it would be THE Game. Would recommend it to ANYONE with a Wii U. The Game is just PURE FUN.

To be clear, I may not be a part of this game's target demographic, but I find it immensely enjoyable. The single player portion is really fun, but the meat of the game is in its online multiplayer. Matchmaking is super fast and each one lasts like 3 minutes, so they don't go on too long. No matter who you are, I think you'll love it.

Unique Game; Easy to Learn; Deep Strategies

In our household, both me and my son play (I'm in my 40s, he's 8#. My son played Splatoon during the Global Testfire demo. It's the only online game he has ever played, so I was worried about whether he would like it. He really enjoyed it and loved it ever since. We got the game on Day 1 and he has played it since. 6 months later it's still the game he plays the most on the Wii U, although he has been playing it less than during the first 3 months. I don't usually play video games for lack of time. But that's one thing I like about Splatoon - the rounds are only 3 mins. long #5 mins. for ranked#, so you can play it as little or as much as you want. The other thing about Splatoon is that it's very different from other games I've tried. With other games, they're all just rehashed versions of older games, with nicer graphics. Mario is still Mario. Shooters are still shooters, etc. Splatoon, on the other hand, is a new concept. Although superficially it is a 3rd person shooter, the ink mechanism turns the shooter concept upside down and adds a totally new dimension to gameplay. It makes it both easy to learn yet so deep in strategy that it is impossible to be "perfect" or unbeatable at it. So, ironically, I've played around 125 hrs thus far in 2 mos that I have played it, more than any other game in recent memory. This, even though I had zero interest in shooters and no prior experience playing online. In fact, I still have no interest playing other games. In fact, it's due to the depth of the strategy that I think my son is playing less now because these days there are so many skilled players that it can actually be quite challenging to play beyond the early levels when you're still matched with other beginners. If you're new to shooters like I was, you might be wondering how you can even play it. That's part of the unique appeal of Splatoon - while shooting skills are great, strategy plays just as important - if not a more important - role. Choosing the right location to fight, outwitting your opponents, and them doing the same to you! I think Sun-Tzu would have loved this game. :) Simply put this is an amazing game, one of the best, if not the best, I have ever played since the days of Atari 2600.

One of my favorite games so far of 2015!

Splatoon is an addictive third person shooter with a twist. In the main multiplayer mode Turf War instead of just trying to shoot other players you need to carefully balance that with covering turf with ink. This creates a whole new dynamic to TPS's. The game also has a great singleplayer mode and 3 ranked battle modes. My only issues with it are that the maps are only available 2 at a time and that you are unable to change gear and weapons in lobby. Despite these two issues the game is still amazing.

    Stays Fresh!

An accessible game that doesn't require precision or instant reflexes to have a good time. Even if you flee from any and all conflict you'll be able to contribute to your team's score and advance in level and gear rankings. By keeping maps on a rotation it keeps any one or two maps from being overplayed or prevents players from sticking to just the maps they're most comfortable in. The game is constantly releasing new content, ensuring players are all exposed to new maps and gear at the same time. The Splatfests are also monthly, giving players plenty of reason to keep coming back. Even the single player is one of the most incredible and unique experiences this year. Focusing on stealth and platforming strategies, it's like Mario Galaxy with guns in philosophy. Simple at first, but with increasingly interesting challenges right up to the very end. The only downside is that, with a more experienced and steady population so long after release, the unranked matches are filled to the gills with experienced players with more advanced equipment. Newbies will have a rough time of it, unable to enjoy the slow learning curve the rest of the day one adopters got to enjoy. Nintendo needs to release a patch that keeps players of same-level playing against each other, even in unranked, to make sure new players aren't wiped so easily.

Actual fun for the whole family

As a family friendly game on a Nintendo console, most people would see Splatoon and immediately walk past it. Those people are unfortunate to miss out on a unique shooter opportunity. I'll get the negative out of the way first. There is no real map selection, it's all based on a two map rotation. These maps are pre-determined by the server systems set and are chosen for each of the two game modes in place. The single player is more of a glorified training as it can be blown through in under 4 hours. The motion based shooting can be finicky, but can be turned off. The good is the multiplayer. From the inclusion of miiverse posts being attached to the players loitering, the graffiti, the pop punk, to the rapid fire multiplayer, there is much to be experienced online. The versus mechanic does not put emphasis on individual murder skills but cooperative territory coverage. Each map can be covered entirely by each teams inky color. Scoring streaks, outfit bonuses, and varying aquatic themed weapons are available to all without additional cash purchases, with the exception of the amiibos related to the game. However, those do not provide unfair advantages over anyone who didn't. Fast and addictive in the most charming way, it's very hard to pass up.

I had gotten tired of the shooter type of game over the past few years but this game caught my attention when I saw it. I love that there's a game mode where the focus isn't primarily to kill your opponent but rather to cover as much ground as you can with your ink gun, kind of like paint ball guns. Wonderful game, can't wait for a sequel!

This game is awesome! Whether you're a casual gamer or a hard core competitor, you will find plenty of content to work with on this game. Now with 300% more stages, 5 times the amount of weapons, and more content to follow thanks to its free updates, it will keep you busy for a long time! Rated (and recommended by to) E for EVERYONE!

    Fun, different, repetitive content

First the cons, get the bad out of the way. I feel like the game is lacking content. There is a short little story mode and online multiplayer. That's it! The multiplayer gets boring and repetitive quickly because there are only two maps at a time! I would much prefer more maps that can be randomly chosen from at the same time, and the ability to choose your own map. I think Nintendo missed out on a chance of making some puzzle levels. With all the different abilities weapons have and bomb types, that could have been an amazing feature! Overall, this is a fun game. It mixes in FPS aspects to the game in a way that most who would never play first person shooters would enjoy. I dislike most FPS games, but immediately got pulled into Splatoon. The controls are easy and intuitive, however take time and practice to perfect. Splatoon is a deceivingly simple game, which makes it a great choice for all ages. The story mode is interesting and quirky and helps the player learn and practice different skills in a less adrenaline fueled, fast paced way. The online play is well done and I noticed little to no lag which can be a huge problem in any kind of online competitive way. The little jump minigame you have while waiting was a great addition! I just wish you had the ability to play it outside of the waiting time. I have yet to play ranked games or with a friend next to me so I am unable to review those aspects of the game. I am worried about the game being able to support a group of say 3-4 friends playing couch co-op. If this isn't supported I will be disappointed.

Such a unique spin on the shooter genre. I've been having a blast playing with friends since they updated the game. Matches are fast paced and cray. The music is addicting. And the guns are a blast to use. If you like shooters that are competitive and quirky, this is for you.

A breath of fresh air for multiplayer gaming. Splatting the enemy and painting your surroundings can be loads of fun. It's also nice having an enjoyable single player campaign in case the multiplayer proves unsatisfying.
