Fun, however controls were a bit frustrating.

Let me start by saying I did play the game, got used to the controls, and beat it. However my initial reaction and opinion to the game still stands. Through out the first portion of the game, I found myself keeping my hands perfectly still so that I wouldn't move the game pad control. Trying to capture the Star Fox 64 game play/flawless control that we all loved so much. However, I accepted that motion controls were a must and learned to play with them. -Game Play:- The game in itself is actually really fun. Lot's of challenges, great level lay outs. Great shoot em up rails game. If you've played previous Star Fox's, you'll be no stranger in how you advanced in the game. -Graphics/Visuals:- They were "decent", however I know Nintendo could have done a much better job. However, I am a firm believer in graphics isn't what makes a game fun. So while the graphics were a bit... meh, game play > graphics. -Sound:- This was a huge disappointment for me. Everything pretty much comes out of the game-pad which has a pretty poor speaker quality to begin with. There should have been an option to allow it to come out on both TV and game pad. -Controls:- Now this is where Nintendo really dropped the ball for me. Yes, I know this is a divided subject, but I'm giving my opinion. I've pretty much "mastered" the controls. However, I still do not like them and the fact that it's required to use motion control. Barrel Rolls I'm used to using with the L and R button, which has now changed to the Right joy stick. Having to mash on the right stick constantly ( which some times doesn't even work very well, resulting in a hit when I actually meant to roll ) while trying to boost, etc does not provide a smooth flow on game play. It feels very awkward. This is where GCN//Pro Controller support should have shined. And then there are the motion controls. There has been enough criticism regarding this, so I'll keep mine short. This Star Fox by far is one of the hardest to control and have fun with due to the motion controls itself. The fact that there is no support for any classic controls is an opportunity Nintendo missed. That being said, I did see the motion controls work REALLY well for stages like the Gyropter, and maybe even the Submarine/LandMaster. For the Arwing though, they should have let us have classic controls. It just feels right. Star Fox typically has a high reply value for me ( I've must;'ve beaten Star Fox 64 over 200+ times ), however due the frustrating controls ( especially at Andross ), this game will sadly collect dust on my shelf as a collect piece. No multi-player support or anything really to make me re-play this with friends. So in short, Game was fun! It's not terrible. But the controls just aren't for me. I like the old fly and shoot method with my controller. :)

Controls have a definite learning curve, still fun

Ok so I am a HUGE Nintendo fan and I absolutely love StarFox but this game is a bit hard to get into. I don't mind that it's a reimagining of StarFox 64 because the cinematics and voice acting is superb. Also the Arwing transformations offer a fun alternative way to deal with situations overall the game is solid in its execution and offers a great 7-10 hour experience encouraging you to revisit stages to improve your score and get medals you missed the 1st time around. Now onto the not so great the new control scheme it is definitely not friendly to you initially it took me a few hours to get a solid grasp of it. Why Nintendo is trying to force Wii U Gamepad integration when it doesn't need it I'll never know. TO MAKE IT EASIER ON YOURSELF I HIGHLY RECOMMEND CHANGING THE SETTINGS SO THAT MOTION IS ONLY ON WHILE AIMING INSTEAD OF "ALWAYS ON" AND CHANGING THE STICK CONTROLS SO THAT ASCEND IS UP AND DESCEND IS DOWN INSTEAD OF THE DEFAULT! But ultimately it's up to you and you can mess around with it to see what works best. Another minor gripe I have is there's no way to get the game sounds and the dialogue all on the game pad or all on the TV. It's always dialogue on Gamepad, music and game sounds on TV so if you do off TV play with the Gamepad PLAY WITH HEADPHONES TO GET THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE as that's the only way around it. If you go into this game expecting for it to basically be StarFox 64 2 then your going to be disappointed because it feels nothing like what you remember. But if your patient with the learning curve of the controls and treat this as a reboot then this game is a lot of fun!

"Innovation for the sake of Innovation"

Star Fox Zero is a game that is not without it's charms, and overall is an enjoyable experience for fans of the series... If you can learn and make use of the needlessly frustrating controls. The visuals, music, and voice acting are all delightful, but the use of motion controls and the Wii U Gamepad's screen (which are required, the game cannot be played without them) often become irritating to use and tear away from everything this game has to offer. It is possible to get used to the controls, and once you do, the game is a very entertaining return to form for the Star Fox series. However, this game feels like one huge case of Nintendo trying to innovate in a series that doesn't need it, instead of focusing on what made Star Fox 64 so great, and improving on it. If the motion controls were optional, this alright game could have been sooo much better. Whether or not I would recommend this game to a friend depends on what the freind is willing to put up with. If they are a person who wants to dive right in and expect to easily get a handle of the controls... I would not. However, if the friend was willing to go thorugh an hour's worth of tutorials to learn how to play, I would recommend Star Fox Zero.

Classic Star Fox style with a motion control twist. If you can take the time to get used to the controls, this becomes a really great game. Switching between screens can be daunting, but you can act like you're playing Splatoon at times. I took off one star for the lack of online or multiplayer (other than the 2 player control division)

Star Fox for Wii U is a great game and just what the Wii U needs. Although it would have been nice to have this come out earlier it is a better game because they delayed it. Graphics are amazing on Wii U and the gameplay is very smooth and fast paced. The controls feel very weird at the beginning and it takes some time to adjust but when you finally figure it all out after an hour or two it is a much better game with the control style they have. There isn't a true 2 player mode, but it does let 2 people play at once. 1 person flies the ship while the other is doing all the aiming and it's surprisingly fun with a friend. Overall while the game isn't perfect, I did thoroughly enjoy it. It is something I will want to go back and beat a few times. Just like the old Star Fox on the N64.

Very Fun, but Difficult To Master Controls

    Posted .

This definitely has a lot more in common with the Nintendo 64 version than other Star Fox games that were released after that particular one. It does have alternate routes for missions and much of it 'feels' familiar. The missions and Boss Battles are definitely challenging and fun. The one major issue that keeps this Star Fox from being 'great' however is the controls. They are difficult to master, but once you get a hang of it, you'll be taking on Star Wolf's team with practiced ease, which feels good, but getting the hang of it is far more of a chore than the past titles in this series. I would still recommend it since there is a good amount to do in the game to keep you occupied if you intend to "100%" it and for others wanting to add to your collection, go for it.

Depending on if you can get used to motion controls will determine if you like this game. For me, I eventually got the hang of it and found a enjoyable game. Star Fox Guard is a nice bonus but may not be for everybody.

I will say this about the game's criticisms. Yes, it does take a while to get used to the controls. But after a few hours you get used to it. the looking up and down at the game pad to shoot isnt ideal but its still fun. Playing two player however breaks up the action with one player piloting and the other looking at the gamepad to shoot. This is actually a lot of fun. As far as star fox guard goes it too is a lot of fun. Fun take on using security cameras as a gameplay element. I havent tried the online functionality yet but im sure it works fine.

    Immersive Game, with "Different" controls

First off, I really enjoy this game. I feel this game does Star Fox justice. I would rate this higher than Starfox assault, but not much higher due to the controls. Yes I know it is a rehashing of the previous incarnations, but it is still a great game. Now on to the controls, this is where I have a small complaint. I will say, I do see where Nintendo was going with these controls, but I do miss being able to use a regular controller. Think Rodea the sky soldier's wiimote control, not terrible at all, but there are times where you just wished you had a regular controller. If you are a fan of Starfox, get this game, and do you best to learn the controllers. It is a worthwhile experience.

I was really hesitant about getting this game because of all the reviews saying how hard the controls can be to master. But now I am very glad that I went for it and believed in Nintendo again. The game is dripping with nostalgia and is very challenging (in a good way). The Starfox universe is full of great characters with great voice acting. Very happy with this game.

I've read reviews for this game and many are rating it as mediocre. That's far from the truth in my opinion. If you've played starfox 64 on the N64 then comparisons will be inevitable. Starfox zero is essentially a retelling of starfox 64 and its a great one at that. In this age of spoilers and game secrets being revealed before games are even released its hard to fully enjoy the games. Discovering things on your own is what made the n64 classic so great. This game introduces new mechanics that separates from its predecessor. Definitely worth a purchase in my opinion.

I was hoping for a star fox 64 feel but the game relies heavily on staring at the gamepad and motion controls and honestly it feels quite annoying when all I wanted to do was dive right in and be star fox and his team and save the galaxy but there was so many different components in store for me that it threw me off quite a bit. I will hang in there and try again soon. It was the initial playthrough that was a letdown but I've heard good things from people.

Ahh, Star Fox in HD. We've waited long enough! The gameplay is very addictive and and easy to learn and get into. Flight controls are simple and intuitive and they made good use of the Wii U Gamepad. Plus, my copy came with an extra little game, so that was pretty sweet.

Star fox is back with a brand new game. In some ways its a retelling of Star fox 64 but it still manages to be its own thing. The only real complaint I have is the motion controls. I've gotten used to them but I wouldn't say I'm a fan of them.

Wrapping your head around the controls will take some getting used to, but if you are a fan of the series, stick with it and you'll have some of that classic shooting sci-fi fun. The controls did click with me after a few tries, but YMMV.
