A different kind of Star Wars score

Star Wars: The Clone Wars has a score unique among the Star Wars movies. While the two trilogies have grand symphonic scores, Kevin Kiner (the composer) gives us a nice blend of different styles of music. This CD contains themes inspired by Middle Eastern and Japanese music, as well as some nice rock-and-roll style peices. All of these styles work well together and, while this is not a John Williams score, it is still appropriate for Star Wars, particularly for the Clone Wars movie. I loved the use of Middle Eastern instruments and vocals in the jungle battles and in Jabba's palace. And the use of shakuhaci (Japanese flute) and erhu (a Chinese instrument similar to a violin but with just two strings) worked very well for the scenes in the Tatooine desert. The familiar Star Wars theme is used, but more percussion heavy than in the live-action movies. There are also some great symphonic compositions, the feel of these is more like the live-action movies but they still have their own style. This CD is a worthy addition to the music of Star Wars. Kevin Kiner made a very wise move in not trying to just copy John Williams (there's only one John Williams). Give it a listen yourself. May the force be with you!
