I love the RGB on it even though that’s not why I got it at all. The keys are amazing. And the brand is on point.

Excellent mechanical keyboard update from SS

As a mechkeyboard enthusiast, this is my full critical appraisal of the Apex 7 TKL.
PROS:
- solid, sturdy, and (perceived to be) durable, aluminum frame with hard plastic back cover
- <5% frame flex
- not too heavy, not too light; has a good weight to it with a premium finish and detailing all around
- keyboard profiles / configs can be loaded onto the keyboard and accessed without the need for the SS Engine software to be running always
- top right corner OLED and function keys makes it easy to switch profiles / configs
- volume control knob is the perfect minimalist replacement for keyboard volume shortcuts / dedicated larger volume control buttons
- minimal branding that doesn't stand out horribly / isn't an eyesore
- compact layout and design providing for a very stylish looking TKL keyboard
- QX2 red switches (aka Gateron reds feat. SteelSeries) are incredibly smooth with (imo) <10% total scratchiness, feeling better than Cherry MX Reds I have used with other keyboards -- subjective note: SS QX2 & Gateron Reds might just be my favorite reds overall
- very appropriate red switch key-noise levels, not very loud -- will update if keys break-in even more
- smooth top keycaps that offer wonderful fingertip-feels
- fantastic LED brightness and quality; beautiful colors and no flickering
- USB cable passthrough & illuminated usb passthrough port
- clean, non-gamery font that works with many aesthetics
- quality rubber feet with one adjustable height preference
- comes with a matte, smooth feel rubber wrist rest that remains well attached to keyboard via magnets
- 5/5 for gaming, 4/5 for typists (but you'd also have to be a typist that enjoys red switches) --- I wrote this whole review on my Apex 7 TKL and I gotta say, I love typing on it.
CONS:
- $130 is a little up there. Maybe $110 would be more reasonable, but this is truly a great keyboard and I have no buyers remorse -- (personal disclaimer: I am frugal, but I find this keyboard worth it)
- only comes with ABS keycaps, so key shine will eventually set in after a very long period of use
- illuminated white USB passthrough port creates mild amounts of light that I wish I could get rid of while playing at night -- can't find any way to turn off white LED USB port illuminator??
- LED backlight bleed from top row of function keys will mildly illuminate the back half of your desk when using high brightness levels
- (subjective) OLED screen with configs selector very minorly throws off the aesthetics of the TKL keyboard
- USB cable is durable and thick, but it doesn't have a lot of bend/give to it, so bends tend to hold and it creeps up over the edge of the back of my desk because of its lack of flexibility
- software is <10% of the time glitchy / has limited lighting controls -- NOTE: this keyboard is less than 1 month old, currently, and SteelSeries is already updating lighting controls. This point should be nulled within a couple weeks
I tried to be as objective as I can with this review, and from a detached view, I'd say it hits a minimum of 4 to 4.5 stars for the overall population of keyboard shoppers. For my preferences and what I look for in a keyboard, I think it's a solid 4.5 to 5 stars. I have some minor gripes about this keyboard, but then again, any product in this world can technically always "be better" than what it is. The ONLY thing that actually bothers me a bit is the white LED illuminated USB port on the back left because it makes my desk a little less dark when writing or gaming in the dark. However, for what this keyboard is, I think it's a great step up from their M750 TKL and an EXCELLENT TKL keyboard overall.

Steel Series Never Disappoints

Steel series keyboards have yet to disappoint me. I upgraded from the Apex 3 to the Apex 7 TKL so I could have a mechanical keyboard as well as a smaller keyboard without the number pad. The red switches are clicky and responsive but not obnoxiously loud and clacky. I use this keyboard primarily for FPS games as well as some typing for different work purposes. Super responsive for gaming and pleasant to type on if you’re a fan of mechanical keyboards. The RGB software is super easy to use and has tons of pre set animation, color profiles, etc. Single key illumination is cool so you can program specific keys to specific colors. Really sturdy and quality made. I personally like the rubbery, harder, wrist wrest but I know some people don’t like that it’s not soft. But it’s super easy to put on and take off thanks to being magnetic so I love it as a feature. Honestly don’t think you can go wrong with this keyboard, I have loved it since I bought it!

I was like Goldy Locks trying to find the perfect keyboard, and this one is it! I love the size and comfort of the keys and wrist rest. The customizable OLED screen is a cool feature as well. The key clicks are much quieter than my previous Razer huntsman mini. I found myself needing to use arrow keys for editing etc so this keyboard is perfect in size since I would never have a need for the full number keys on the side.
The built in software is easy to use and has the coolest color customization options.

There's a reason why most e-sports players use SteelSeries products, they're extremely well built, nicely laid out, and just look good. This keyboard has durable aluminum construction, individually lit keys, and comes with a nice wrist rest. Not to mention, there is an accompanying software which is easy to use and the keyboard has a clever wire management method built in, allowing you to route the cable anywhere you need. The LEDs are nice and bright too. It's a wonderful keyboard.

Honestly, this is a nice look keyboard that is of a good build quality. It has a nice added feature with a tiny screen on the keyboard and comes with a nice wrist pad. The only issue I had is that keyboard is on the more expensive side.
Note that this keyboard utilizes red switches, so you will not be receiving any tactile feedback and will lack a clicky sound (in case that is something you are looking for).

The color is perfect - I am a huge fan of SteelSeries products, and I prefer the white colors over black. The keyboard fits in so well with my current aesthetic. It's also very clicky and more mechanical than my previous Alienware one, which I prefer the SteelSeries for! I do miss having a numberpad on the right hand side though which is my only issue with it. The OLED screen is awesome, and I love the magnetic wrist rest. Honestly, this is very much worth the price for me!

This keyboard is packed full of great features, except one and that's not even close to being a deal breaker for me.
The good:
- The red switches give just the right feedback and tactile response
- The software used to configure the lights and macros is extremely easy to use
- The magnetic wrist rest is great because there are no more connector pieces to break. and the rubberized texture feels great
- The size and form factor are perfect for saving space. Unlike other TKL keyboards, there is no unnecessary space on the housing. The keys go right up the edge.
The bad: (and not really even that bad)
- stiff plastic covered USB cord. I would have like seen a softer paracord wrapped cable, especially at this price point.

I'm not a gamer. I am an avid typist: grad student, business owner, and corporate exec, and now homeschool mommy-teacher. IOW- I live at my desk.
Due to this, I have become a keyboard enthusiast. I had a wireless logitech before this one that I used for years before it started acting up on me (a lot), then I had a Havit membrane that was great and dependable, but too big for my desk and fingers (spacing). After 2 weeks of research - I bought this one since it was the only RGB TKL at Best Buy that wasn't Logitech. Turns out- it's slim pickings no matter what store you go to (as of 2020).
What's AWESOME:
1. Volume Roller - I just found out I cannot live without this
2. TKL - extra space increases workflow, focus, and productivity
3. Customizable RGB effects - don't require bloatware installation
What's NOT:
-Keycaps feel cheap since they are ABS instead of PBT.
-MX red switches are too easy to accidentally push - as a typist, I need blues (Not carried at Best Buy)
Overall:
The SS APEX TKL is the best keyboard on the market imo. They're superior in experience, simplicity and elegance.
The screen is a little gimicky but the features and how it allows you to change settings with the wheel or put in your name is neat. I kind of wish it had dedicated macros (preferably on the left) since I have carpal tunnel and don't like using the fn + keys.
I Tried:
Razer huntsmen red linear: horrible experience - decent switches but bad repetitive, possessed-like software and it slowed down my computer even after uninstalling!
Logitech G Pro blue clicky: painful and annoying mx switches and there are no lights on the secondary keys (#$%^&...) which is useful when typing in the dark.
Apex TKL 7 RED - (noted above)
Apex TKL 7 BROWN - annoying hollow sound
APEX TKL 7 BLUE - as good as it gets (perfect after I modify the keycaps)
Final Outcome:
I ordered the SS MX Blue Apex 7 TKL and green Razer Blackwidow TE (for the amazing fluffy soft wrist rest)

Amazing quality, great size, quality keys and plenty of RGB settings

This is a new Steel Series keyboard. It wasn't on sale but I bought it anyways for my teenage son, an avid PC gamer. He absolutely loves it. He's been through 3 very good gaming keyboards in the last 10 months and he says this one is the best by far! It even has a mini OLED screen with a mini scroller so you can toggle through a few presets very quickly while playing. The keyboard is of course full RGB and made of aluminium and has pretty good weight to it which means a solid, quality built product. So I would say buy it at regular price or maybe wait for a sale but it is worth every penny at regular price.

Love this keyboard. No problems with it other than the spacebar which is louder and clacks more than the other keys. The wrist rest is a piece of plastic with a soft touch rubber coating on it. The screen and volume wheel are a nice touch. It comes with flip out feet and they seem nice even though I don’t use them. For 130$ dollars the keyboard is pretty expensive but it is better than my Apex 3 that I upgraded from. The RGB lighting is very customizable with the engine software and looks very nice. Overall it is a great keyboard with almost no issues. 9/10 would recommend

What's not to love? Red switches? Perfect size and feel wrist rest? (Razer wrist rest is too tall and making key press needing extra effort). Rgb is fun and beautiful.

I just bought this keyboard and set it up immediately. The software is easy to use and the RGB lighting is fantastic. The switches are a little inconsistent, but for gaming, you can't even notice it. The magnetic wrist rest is perfect for me and it is super comfortable. What an amazing asset! The owners manual is easy to understand and the OLED display is super fun. I love the volume scroll wheel and although there was that one tiny mistake, all of the pros cancel out the cons and therefore, I am giving it a 5 star review.

While I do not advise trying to use this as a normal typing keyboard, for gaming it works great. Typing is tough only because the way the keys are while trying to move your fingers to different keys. BUT, it has great features, you can customize the RGB on the keyboard or with the SteelSeries app, and the magnetic rest on the front is great (could be just a tish longer but won't hold it against them) I love SteelSeries products and would recommend them to anyone.

pros-
the frame feels sturdy
The wrist rest, although it can be at a bit of a weird angle, it feels nice, and definitely is something I prefer
the red switches actually feel better than cherry mx reds to me
cons-
the software is a bit finicky at times
the ABS keycaps it comes with arent the best, but I swapped them out for some hyperx pudding keycaps, and that fixed it
the price is a bit high (130)

One of the best keyboards I’ve ever used. From the look, to the feel, to the sound of the keys, and the customizing options as well. I absolutely love every bit of it.
