    My Favorite Game, Subnautica

I have been playing video games for as long as I can remember. One day I saw one of my favorite youtubers playing the early release version of the game Subnautica. The early release version of games is basically the unfinished game. It's meant to give people an early look of what the game is and how it functions, while also helping developers fund the game while making it. The early release version of subnautica was released in december of 2014, while the full completed game was released in 2018. I bought the full version when it came out because I thought the game looked fun. In subnautica, you play as a systems maintenance chief for the Alterra corporation named rylie robinson. The game starts with you, ryley, in an awesome cutscene entering an escape pod of the giant spaceship, the Aurora. The Aurora is flying over an ocean planet called 4546B . The ship crashes as you eject out of it, leaving you as the sole survivor of the crash. After the dust settles, you wake up and exit your lifepod, looking at the wide empty ocean. After this, the objective of the game is just to survive, you swim around the ocean floor looking for food and supplies to help aid you in your survival, and build awesome futuristic tools for building bases, building underwater vehicles, and much more. At first, it seems to be just another survival game and can be a little boring, but you slowly learn that there's more than meets the eye. As you go on, more and more story and plot is revealed to you, giving you more of a real objective other than pure survival. Subnautica is a game with many strengths. It’s a very unique game, from all the alien sea creatures, to the landscape and structures, it has a unique art style. Another strength it has, in my opinion, is the horror elements. The game starts very bright and vibrant making the player get comfortable, but as you explore and progress the game throws terrifying creatures and situations at you, giving the game an unexpected horror side to it. One of the game's most important elements is the story. I won't spoil it for anybody who hasn't played, but the story is very engaging and unique. It gives the lore to you in multiple ways, including PDA’s you can read, voice logs to listen to, and environmental storytelling. The ending is quite satisfying and honestly beautiful, making you look at not just yourself, but the bigger picture of the world around you. No game is perfect, and subnautica is no exception. There aren't many faults in this game but these are the ones I could think of. The game is glitchy and full of bugs. Though they fixed a lot of these issues in early release, there are still times where I will find myself falling or swimming through solid objects like the ground or walls. Some equipment you use can even send you flying through the air for no reason, which is admittedly pretty funny, but still inconvenient. Another fallback is in the gameplay. There are a lot of times where you go to the other side of the map to get materials, and when you get back you realize you have to go all the way back because you didn't get everything. There are times when you reach a new area, and as you're exploring you realize you need something you didn't bring with you to continue making some parts of the game very tedious. Overall, subnautica is a great game with an amazing story, awesome art, and is just plain fun. If i were to give it a rating i would say a 9/10. I would say 10/10, but there are some things wrong with it, like the bugging issues. This is by far my favorite game of all time. I would 100% recommend this game to anyone who is into gaming.

    Beautiful but Broken Mess

When Subnautica works, it's an awesome, underwater survival game. When it doesn't work, it either freezes, or the frame rate is so low it's a slide show. The game starts with your space ship crashing onto an alien world. You will need to find materials for food, water, tools, and eventually shelter beneath the surface of a vast ocean. Managing your air supply is critical, and you can dive deeper as you unlock new upgrades. The different biomes are well-designed, and they offer many different resources and creatures. You can eat some of them, and some of them will eat you. There is a great sense of exploration and discovery that pushes to find one more thing, venture into a dark cave, or pursue a distress call from another lifeboat. As I mentioned, what would otherwise be an amazing game is absolutely ruined by pathetic performance. It's not just visual hitches that make it hard to see, you will be chasing fish to eat or trying to reach the surface. The jumps between where you were and where you are when (or if) the game catches up to you is huge and can make this a frustrating experience. As of this review, I am playing on the latest patch. I appreciate the developers are supporting the game, but I wish they would stop trying to put out a new game and fix the one I just bought. I am playing on a PS4 Pro. There is no excuse for this game to perform so very poorly. After a few more patches (coming, but developer has not given a timeframe), this is a game that I would unreservedly recommend. As it is now, I would wait for it to be deeply discounted, something I wouldn't expect to take very long when people realize the current state of the game's performance.

The game is overall good to mess around and explore with. Controls are a little weird at first but you'll be able to get used to it.

PS5 version plagued with crashes in last half of game. Frequent saving required. Then at one point, you get warning that saving failed. On the next crash you discover your only save file is gone. Options are walk away or start over. Game breaking bug. Don't waste your money or time.
