HOWEVER, it would be really great to be able to mount it somewhere other than the windshield as the device and hanging cord is a driving distraction.

Posted .You should try cleaning the suction cup and the mounting area of the windshield with rubbing alcohol, drying both surfaces with a lint-free cloth and applying moisture to the suction cup before placing it on the windshield, this creates a better seal and helps the device stay in place.
