Best open world Mario since Mario 64...

Not very challenging or groundbreaking IMO, but nintendo put together an open world Mario game that is fun to play for all ages, without becoming too redundant. Being able to "possess" different enemies/creatures/objects in each area, and make use of their unique abilities, helps keep the game fresh and makes exploring each area more enjoyable. My only real complaints would be that much of the control mechanics appear to be built around the motion controls, while the traditional control alternatives seem to have been implemented as an afterthought, making some of the new "cap" mechanics impractical... so, playing in handheld mode can be a little bit limiting, unless you don't mind shaking your system all around. Overall, a solid game.

It feels a touch ridiculous to even bother reviewing this game, since it has received nothing but adoration from the press. Still, I think it's worth adding my 2 cents: if you enjoy the simple act of moving a character through a 3D space, this game will be perfect for you. It surprises with new, inherently fun and tightly designed challenges at every opportunity. It avoids being off-putting for newcomers by teaching the basic well and permitting a player to proceed through the main game by obtaining only a small number of collectibles in each area; more 'hardcore' players will find quite a bit of depth, though, as they keep coming back for the harder goals. The game even has a hidden 'achievement' system that tracks when the player has accomplished specific tasks. All in all, it's one of the best entries in one of the game medium's most reliable franchises.

This is a wonderful return to open world Mario games. It's absolutely gorgeous and while the storyline itself is short, there's a ton of stuff to do. There are also clever references from Mario games past that really add a feel of nostalgia to the game.

I’ve been a huge fan of Mario ever since my sister’s boyfriend lent me his NES, back in 1996. Then not too long after I got an N64 for Christmas, along with a copy of “Super Mario 64”. That particular moment was when fandom crossed the line into obsession. That being said, I have yet to have that same experience with another Mario game... until “Odyssey” came along, that is. I actually saved up and bought the Nintendo Switch just for this game and I have not regretted that decision for a second. Every single second I play the game, I am transported back to my 5-year-old self, experiencing the world of Super Mario for the first time. Plus, the game isn’t just for kids either. The entirety of the gameplay is just the right mixture of fun, varying, and challenging to also appeal to the adult crowd. I should know, I happen to be one myself.

Love this game, great graphics and levels. Great story line, the only reason I cannot give it a 5 stars is because I feel a bit letdown on the supposed 2 player capability. Let's face it I do not want to be the hat, I want to be Mario. I was expecting it to br like Super Mario World or at least super Mario Bros in terms of multiplayers but here you get to be Mario or the Hat. Supposedly once you unlock certain levels there is a co-op/multiplayer challenge level. Have not gotten that far. So know it is super fun to play but it is not a true 2 player game.

I purchased the game for myself for Christmas. It is sooo much fun. My favorite part is so much of the original Mario context is included. Brings back all my childhood memories. I truly enjoy playing this game. So worth the purchase!!!

    Best Mario game since Sunshine

I grew up with Super Mario Sunshine and that game has always had a special place in my heart. The charming world building, challenging puzzles, and variety of easter eggs kept it interesting and provided tons of replayability. Odyssey follows the same structure, but has many more features and charms of its own. The puzzles are fun, and the ability to possess other creatures constantly adds new methods of reaching places. The game makes you work for it if you're a completionist and that makes it all the more satisfying when you discover another moon hidden away, but it also doesn't force you to track down every single item in the game. If you're more interested in the storyline, you can easily bypass the more difficult challenges and move on. It's a great partnership of a platformer and an open world RPG, and I think anybody would have a blast playing it.

Above all else, this game is built to be fun to play. It's pretty, but not flashy with graphics. It's tough at times, but not exceedingly difficult. It's what you expect from Mario, with great new game play elements. I would recommend it for anyone.

We bought this for our kids for Christmas (11 years old and 15 years old). The husband and I ended up playing it more than they did. It was so much fun! We love that the game incorporates all past Mario elements. It was a throwback to the past. This game is SUPER LONG. Even after you beat it, the game is not over. So much more to do, but honestly that's what you get with Super Mario games. They are always so much fun, and give you your money's worth! I highly recommend this for families and for children ages 8 and up. You have to read a lot in this game in order to know what to do. I also think this game is fun just for adults. We are a family that loves the Xbox one but we like to go back to our roots where it all began for us, which is the Nintendo. We still have our original SNES and N64 hooked up, and this game was not a disappointment!

Hard to say which is the best game on switch this or Zelda but this is the best Mario game since Super Mario World on SNES and this plays very much like the 64 version. Open world concept with tons to explore so don't plan on flying through this one.

This game is going to go down in history as one of the greatest games ever made. The graphics are great, the controls are smooth and is classic Mario. I have no complaints about this game, and I think Nintendo hit it out of the park with this game.
