After so many years and so many Super Mario games the possibility of the game becoming stale is a real possibility. Once again though Nintendo manages to deliver another great game with the latest outing for Mario. It is great new adventure and technical improvements with elements of older Mario games throughout that bring back great memories and feelings from the past. From the soundtrack to the game play old emotions will bubble to the surface. Even some of the frustration you hated. Thankfully they have included a mode to help get past some of the more difficult parts because i know my reflexes aren't getting better with age. A great game and necessary addition to the growing Switch library.

My daughter and I have loved playing this. For her it has tons to explore, even in the earlier levels which are easier. So even if she gets frustrated by the hard levels there's still tons to do in the easy ones. For me it reminds me of my days playing Mario 64 but much much bigger.

Visually, this is the best the series has ever looked, while the gameplay feels like it's based off of the best parts of Mario 64. While each level has a clearly marked main goal, they're made to lure you off course, letting you go after whatever catches your eye. The main story is designed to be fun for people of any skill level (there is a very helpful Assist Mode that you can use at any time if you're not sure what to do), but the later challenges push you to learn all of Mario's abilities. In particular, if you can learn to use the triple-jump-and-dive-bounce then you can leap across massive gaps or scale almost any wall. If you have a Switch, get this game.

I have always been a huge Nintendo fan when it comes to gaming. Super Mario games are usually among my favorites, from SMB3 on NES, SM64, SMGalaxy, etc. Odyssey has met and probably exceeded my expectations. The game play and mechanics are flawless (imo) and there are plenty of kingdoms/levels to play through with tons of hidden extras to keep you busy. Yesterday I became nervous when I thought that I was getting close to beating the game and that my fun would be cut short, but I checked online and realized that I was only about half way through! I will definitely be replaying this game multiple times in the future. Thank you NINTENDO!

I bought this game remembering how great Mario 64 was, and oh boy did it not disappoint. This game is so much fun I haven't stopped playing every time I have a chance. The new hat mechanics are really fun and add something fresh and new to the Mario series without it feeling weird or out of place. This game as more stars (or power moons as they call it) than you can imagine, with more puzzles and hidden passages and mysteries than you can solve in one play through. I'm almost done with the main story, but I can already tell it will be really fun to go back to all the levels and finding every single power moon. I highly recommend it!

This game is beautifully detailed. The aesthetics to how Mario interacts with the worlds is nothing short of amazing. Story is again very simple where Peach needs rescuing but I don't really play Mario platformer games for their story anyway. Gameplay however is too good. Mario has a more diverse set of moves to traverse around the world with Cappy this time around and it is a blast trying to speedrun or reach areas that seem impossible. The main game is a little on the easy side but I hear that post-game ramps it up quite a bit so I am looking forward to that for sure. I definitely recommend this to anyone who has a Switch!

Super Mario Odyssey is a great game. The various kingdoms and their novel themes are some of the funnest and most aesthetically amazing environments in a Mario game to date. Pros: - Great Pacing: So much to do and you're never stuck doing the same thing long enough to get bored. - HUGE amounts of nostalgia throwbacks: There are a lot of nods to classic Super Mario Bros. & Donkey Kong games. - The new hat mechanic is a blast! - If you have enjoyed Mario 64/Mario Galaxy, there are a lot of familiar and welcomed returns to this series. - Pauline: Peach has friend-zoned Mario for far too long. Time to go back to the hot redhead instead (there's an awesome scenario in New Donk City that's well worth completing). Cons: - Enforcing motion controls to pull off some of the more advanced moves is a bad decision on Nintendo's part. - The lack of depth perception, 8-point directional controls, and weird slow-to-acceleration controls can often become frustrating as they may cause you to fail scenarios, miss jumps, or aim your hat throws improperly. - The cosmetic costumes, although great looking, don't offer any mechanical value (buying a snorkle/swimsuit doesn't make you be able to hold your breath under water longer or swim faster, the winter coat doesn't stave off the chilling effects of the cold any better than the boxer shorts, etc.). It makes pursuing these costumes kind of shallow and moot. - The main game is incredibly short: I thought I took the scenic route and yet won the main portion of the game in 2-3 days. Players ignoring the peripheral content could probably win the game in half that time. There's a huge collect-a-thon after the main game is won so at least you're able to keep playing but the story structure is crafted considerably worse. All in all, this is one of the best Super Mario games I've played and if you're a fan of 3D platforming, games the whole family can enjoy, and/or are thinking of taking the Switch plunge and are still wondering if there are enough good games on it yet - this will definitely be for you (see also: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, etc.).

Super Mario Odyssey is a throw back to Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. It is a true to form throw back to 3d open world Mario games. There is a good difficulty ranges making it easy for kids to enjoy, while still as keep it interesting for adults. I was a little disappointed by the length, but the game really opens up after completion. The main story is around 15 hours long if you go straight through, but after completing the main story, the remaining content is massive. The "kingdoms" you travel to are gorgeous, well design, and full of secrets and easter eggs to find. The main story is the usual, bowser kidnaps Princess Peach, and Mario sets out to save her. Sunshine introduced us to F.LU.D.D., the water shooting backpack companion. Like Sunshine, Odyssey teams you up with Cappy. Cappy provides the main game play mechanics for Odyssey, with the main one being capture. Capture mixes up the game play, and lets you play as different characters/enemies, each with their own unique skills and weakness. These skills are designed to help you traverse the terrain and solve puzzles relative to the kingdom you're in. Each kingdom has enemies specific to it, with only some cross over. There is a huge variety of "baddies" in Odyssey, some new interesting one, and even more being recognizable from previous 2d Mario titles. Outside of Bowser, the majority of bosses in the game are the Brodals, a gang of giant miscreant Bunnies. You encounter these guys regularly, and are my main gripe with the game. They are boring, and IMO just a distraction. Thankfully, though these battles are over quickly. Odyssey also includes 8bit 2d mario mini levels in each kingdom. These are mostly used as a door to progress to another area of the map, or contain some collectible to find. The main collectible in the game are Power Moons. Odyssey has a lot of power moons, somewhere over 800, with most of which not being obtainable until you replay each kingdom, after completing the main story. Another collectible are coins specific to each kingdom, 100 in each. These are used to buy collectibles, and outfits. Outfits, while not adding any skills or stats, often are required to get access to specific moons. Standard coins, also used to be used to purchase items and outfits, are found in all kingdoms and act as your lives. Each time you die you lose 10 coins. This, however, isn't ever a problem, because there are just so many to be found. I really loved playing this game.
