Possibly the best Mario game yet!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For me, this game is up there with Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, and Super Mario Galaxy. The controls are sharp and intuitive and there's tons of content in the game. The only potential downside is that it's not a very challenging game. I wouldn't have minded having some more difficult portions for late game moon collecting but the game is so fun as it is, and it's not overly easy, that I don't mind moving to another game if I want a real challenge.

Truly an Odyssey in every sense
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Man, what a game- this is easily one of my favorite Mario titles since the Galaxy game’s, and may even be one of my fav games of the year- gorgeous graphics, great music, plenty of charm and character, super-tight controls, and tons of interesting gameplay mechanics! This game is for any Jumpman-fan (ooh, that’s catchy- don’t let me forget that) who feels that the series has lost its creativity in recent years- the game takes an extremely nonlinear, open-ended approach similar to Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine, and it pays off because this is one of the most fresh and inventive Mario games to come out in a while, largely thanks to a slew of creative mechanics like Mario’s hat, capturing enemies and of course the utterly fab outfits that you can wear- work that sombrero, Mario!! There’s a heck of a lot to do in this game- over 800 power moons in the game (which are basically power stars/shines). Only 100 are needed to complete the main story, and 500 in order for other stuff (an alter net ending I think? I honestly have no idea, haven’t beat the game yet), but that doesn’t matter because the game is so dang fun you’ll want to go hunting for every single moon and every single outfit. If I have any gripes, it’s that some moves can only be performed with the Joy Con’s motion controls, but that’s a pretty minor gripe at least for me- they really aren’t that intolerable and even a bit intuitive. Just wish I could climb poles faster without shaking my left hand like a maniac in the middle of public, though. Even despite this gripe, Mario Odyssey is a must-play for ANY Switch owner- definitely one of the killer apps for the system thus far along with Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Snipperclips. Get it ASAP!! -Tristan

Another Reason to Switch
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Mario Odyssey, despite being a title I mistype 90% of the time, is the true successor to Mario 64. Personally, I've always been in that fringe of people who weren't huge fans of the Galaxy games. I found them a bit too linear, and bit too cumbersome to play as a result of the Wii being the Wii. On the other hand, I loved Sunshine. I loved 64. Because these games had great movement, jumping, spinning, going fast, going high, all of it felt great and they're still replayable to this day in a way the Galaxy games or even 3D World aren't. There always seemed to be something new to figure out or something that I thought maybe no one else had discovered (of course they had, this is the internet). A special sense of exploration that's been missing until Odyssey. Finally, Nintendo has brought back movement being an art form in Mario. Varied kingdoms and an ocean of moons to collect. Odyssey is probably the beefiest Mario there's ever been. It isn't perfect, the difficulty curve is a bit too flat until some end game stuff, which in all honesty makes the main story pretty short. Around 8 hours or so. The overabundance of moons sort of detracts from the value of doing hard challenges for them. Of course, that won't stop people like me from making a challenge of the game via speedrunning, or self-imposed challenges of some variety. The game is just fun to move around in, so making my own fun is least the challenging thing in the game. Even without those challenges, there's at least 30 hours of content to truly get 100%. Odyssey deserves it's spot on the shockingly long list of Game of the Year 2017 contenders. Nintendo continues to make Switch's first year incredible. Keep up the momentum.

Platforming Perfection
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There's a lot to love about Super Mario Odyssey. The gameplay, controls, challenges, and visuals are top notch. The story is typical for a modern Mario game, but that's not why we play them. From the moment the opening cutscene ended and I had control of Mario, instinct took over. Running, jumping, triple jumps, wall jumps, slides. All the moves were there, and I didn't even need to think about them. But as is standard for Mario games, quick tutorials abound. By the time you work your way through the "tutorial" stage, you've been introduced to all the basic moves. In addition to the classic moves, Mario gets several new tricks in this game, including the ability to take control of certain enemies to get around the stages. As you encounter new challenges, tips pop up. Speaking of challenges, there is a nice mix. Some of them are super easy, some of them are head scratchers, and some are only accessible once the story has been completed. There has been a complaint that some of the "challenges" were just giveaways for taking the logical path. I don't have a problem with this at all. Perhaps the game is a bit generous with the rewards, but it is great for people who just want to complete the main game and don't really have the interest (or the time) to find every secret. It's not overly complicated to get enough "moons" to unlock the next world or stage. Additionally, because of the mobile nature of the switch, having a lot of quick challenges is great for when you only have a few minutes of play time. It's possible to complete a challenge during a 15 minute bus or train ride. This also is great for someone like myself, who might only have 30 minutes of game time between other family responsibilities. I feel like I am making real progress even in short gaming sessions. If you're a fan of Mario games or haven't played one since the N64, Super Mario Odyssey won't disappoint.

A must for all Switch Owner
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game is by far the best Super Mario game that I have ever played. As in previous Super Mario games, your goal is to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. Though that is probably where similarity ends. In this installment, the stages (or world) are relatively open and encourage exploration. Each world also have its unique "coin" that you can use to buy different outfit for Mario. The game is also very forgiving in terms of difficulty. Online previous games where you have limited lives (and you gain extra one by collecting 100 coins or green mushroom), in this game you only lose 10 coins each time you die. Another interesting thing about Odyssey is the fact that you can also play with your friend in two player mode where you each will take control of Mario and Cappy. Though, the player playing as Cappy will have limited movement. I think that it is a little bit more difficult to play than single player because of the camera angle. The game will keep you occupied for months. There are a lot of things to collect even after you finish the main story. Much like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey is a must buy for all Nintendo Switch owners.

A rare complete family entertainer!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Super Mario Odyssey is one of those rare games that somehow works for everyone in our house. Our 10-year-old absolutely loves it and can play it for hours, just running around, exploring, and finding new things. What surprised me the most, though, is how much my wife enjoys it too. That almost never happens with video games, but Odyssey just has this easygoing, fun vibe that pulls you in without feeling complicated or stressful. Another thing that really hits home is how the game brings back the classic 2D Mario sections. Those moments instantly take you back to the old side-scrolling Mario games many of us grew up with. Seeing that blend of old-school Mario mixed into a modern 3D game is genuinely fun, and it adds a layer of nostalgia without feeling forced. It ends up being something we can all enjoy together — not just playing, but watching, laughing, and talking about — and that’s what makes it special for us.

Very charming and fun
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a 40-something year old that hasn't played any Super Mario game since the SNES era, I must say that I am really enjoying this game. In my youth, these games were usually harder to beat, as they had many levels which required lots of practice (very repetitive). Super Mario Odyssey is completely different (at least to me, and maybe this is the new norm now); the game has an excellent story line, it's got the Nintendo charm, beautiful graphics, and most importantly it's not incredibly difficult (it's not discouraging and makes you want to keep playing). I had read great things about this game, and I'm glad I was able to get it finally. I highly recommend this to anyone, whether you are a child or a guy in your 40's that still enjoys these types of games.

A Must-Play Gem on Nintendo Switch
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. From the moment you boot it up, this game proves why it deserves a spot among the best on the Nintendo Switch. Visually, it’s one of the most stunning titles available on the system. The attention to detail, vibrant colors, and smooth animation push the Switch hardware to impressive limits, offering a truly beautiful and immersive experience whether you're playing docked or handheld. The soundtrack is equally stellar, each track perfectly complements the mood of the gameplay, from high-energy action sequences to quiet, reflective moments. It's the kind of music that sticks with you long after you’ve put the controller down. Speaking of controllers, the game plays like a dream. The controls are tight, responsive, and intuitive, making it accessible for newcomers while still offering enough depth for seasoned players. Every movement and action feels fluid and satisfying, creating a gameplay loop that’s hard to put down. What really makes this game shine, though, is just how fun it is. Whether you're playing solo or sharing the experience with others (there is a simple 2 player mode), there's a genuine joy in exploring, discovering, and progressing through its world. It strikes a perfect balance of challenge and accessibility, making it an ideal pick for players of all ages. In short, this is a top-tier Switch title that checks every box: breathtaking visuals, an unforgettable soundtrack, polished controls, and gameplay that keeps you coming back. If you’re looking for a game that showcases the very best of what the Switch has to offer, look no further.

Mario Looks More Dapper Than Ever
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Why do I say that? Because he has the biggest wardrobe in Mario history with this game! Customize your outfits and explore a vast open world...wait this is only a level? Each level is so huge and filled with so many neat little things to explore, you'll really have lots of fun digging deep for hidden moons. Moons now replace the stars and sprites of old, and it's okay because Cappy, Mario's sidekick, need them to fly Mario to his next destination! The characters are all wonderful and if you have a friend or sibling or anyone who wants to join in, they can help out as Cappy in Assist mode. This game is definitely one of the best titles on the Switch for a reason, but for me, it just had SO MUCH replay value. I can never get bored! Get this game and enjoy it for the long haul :D

A must-play Mario adventure
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Super Mario Odyssey is one of the best Mario games I’ve ever played. The worlds are creative and full of surprises, and exploring each level never feels repetitive. The controls are smooth and intuitive, making the game fun for both new players and longtime fans. The mix of platforming, exploration, and clever puzzles keeps the experience fresh from start to finish. This is a classic Nintendo game that’s absolutely worth owning.

Mario Par Excellence
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Mario Odyssey continues Nintendo's win streak of amazing 3D Mario games while artfully innovating on a formula they've used so successfully over so many games. The controls in Odyssey work a lot like the other Mario 3D games like Galaxy, but with the capture dynamic you effectively get to play as a whole host of different characters, depending on what you capture. You still get that delightful feeling of discovery that you get with most Mario games, but it's even more fun to play as some of the iconic Mario enemies like a Bullet Bill or Cheep Cheep. Odyssey isn't particularly hard so it's really about enjoying the ride and exploring, but that is more than enough to make it a 5/5.

So Many Power Moons... OMG!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a must own for anyone with a Nintendo Switch. Great platforming, story, gameplay, etc. Lots of collectables to find and buy. I have 35 hours into this game and found almost 3/4 of the power moons but still have more to go plus the bonus kingdoms to complete. The 2D sections are some of my favorite areas to find. I would say this game is good for both casual gamer and a more advanced gamer. For casual gamer the main story line is not too difficult to complete and you will have fun exploring the many kingdoms. The advanced gamer will be doing the very difficult platforming sections so they can collect all the moons for a 100% completion.

Great successor to the open-world Mario games!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game is beautifully detailed. The aesthetics to how Mario interacts with the worlds is nothing short of amazing. Story is again very simple where Peach needs rescuing but I don't really play Mario platformer games for their story anyway. Gameplay however is too good. Mario has a more diverse set of moves to traverse around the world with Cappy this time around and it is a blast trying to speedrun or reach areas that seem impossible. The main game is a little on the easy side but I hear that post-game ramps it up quite a bit so I am looking forward to that for sure. I definitely recommend this to anyone who has a Switch!

Absolutely Wonderful
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Super Mario Odyssey is a throw back to Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. It is a true to form throw back to 3d open world Mario games. There is a good difficulty ranges making it easy for kids to enjoy, while still as keep it interesting for adults. I was a little disappointed by the length, but the game really opens up after completion. The main story is around 15 hours long if you go straight through, but after completing the main story, the remaining content is massive. The "kingdoms" you travel to are gorgeous, well design, and full of secrets and easter eggs to find. The main story is the usual, bowser kidnaps Princess Peach, and Mario sets out to save her. Sunshine introduced us to F.LU.D.D., the water shooting backpack companion. Like Sunshine, Odyssey teams you up with Cappy. Cappy provides the main game play mechanics for Odyssey, with the main one being capture. Capture mixes up the game play, and lets you play as different characters/enemies, each with their own unique skills and weakness. These skills are designed to help you traverse the terrain and solve puzzles relative to the kingdom you're in. Each kingdom has enemies specific to it, with only some cross over. There is a huge variety of "baddies" in Odyssey, some new interesting one, and even more being recognizable from previous 2d Mario titles. Outside of Bowser, the majority of bosses in the game are the Brodals, a gang of giant miscreant Bunnies. You encounter these guys regularly, and are my main gripe with the game. They are boring, and IMO just a distraction. Thankfully, though these battles are over quickly. Odyssey also includes 8bit 2d mario mini levels in each kingdom. These are mostly used as a door to progress to another area of the map, or contain some collectible to find. The main collectible in the game are Power Moons. Odyssey has a lot of power moons, somewhere over 800, with most of which not being obtainable until you replay each kingdom, after completing the main story. Another collectible are coins specific to each kingdom, 100 in each. These are used to buy collectibles, and outfits. Outfits, while not adding any skills or stats, often are required to get access to specific moons. Standard coins, also used to be used to purchase items and outfits, are found in all kingdoms and act as your lives. Each time you die you lose 10 coins. This, however, isn't ever a problem, because there are just so many to be found. I really loved playing this game.

Captivating Adventure!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been a long time fan of the Mario games. From the original Donkey Kong arcade game to this gem, I've played and beat them all. Mario Odyssey feels like the true successor to Mario 64 we've been waiting all these years to play. The controls are smooth as butter, the graphics are pretty, the story is charming, and the bits a nostalgia Nintendo graciously baked in will have you teary eyes right after the credits roll. If you're even slightly considering buying the game, stop sitting on the fence and bite the bullet bill. You'll be glad you did. After all, the princess needs you now more than ever!

Amazing Game, Filled with Content
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game is probably the Switch's first must-own game, there is content here not just for avid Nintendo fans but also, people of all ages, certain Power Moons are much easier to get than others, and some extremely difficult so while certain parts of the game are a cake walk for those with more experience, there are parts that are far more difficult for those looking for a challenge. without spoiling too much about the game, the gameplay is simply fantastic, easy to use controls, fun story and probably one of the most innovative features ever added to a Mario Game, Cap-turing!

Mario at his finest
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game has it all - gorgeous graphics, great music, tight controls and, most importantly - fun! There have been some reviews saying that the game is too easy. That's only if you're going for the bare minimum to beat the game. The harder to locate moons are where the real challenge lies. And while you only need a couple hundred to finish the game, there are close to 1,000 of them in the game! This game is fun for everyone but the most jaded gamer. Kids, adults, casual and hardcore gamers will all find something to love about this game. Stop reading! Buy this now!
