Playing through the first few levels of Super Mario Odyssey really shows how far this series has come through its nearly 40 years of existence.
Its subtle (and not so subtle) references to Mario games of the past, particularly the original Super Mario Bros, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy and the recent Super Mario 3D World combine to create an awesome mix of all that you loved about the Marios of the past.
The inclusion of Cappy is a literal game changer. He's the most useful sidekick Mario's had since Yoshi. The inventive ways you can use him to get around levels and take control of enemies gives you a sense of freedom not seen since the groundbreaking Super Mario 64.
Odyssey's level of detail is tremendous. It really shows off the potential of the Switch. From the fabric and stitching of Mario's cap to the soot that builds up on our hero if he stands near a chimney, the incredible amount of care and attention to detail is truly deserving of such an iconic franchise. It more than holds its own against champions of minutia such as Grand Theft Auto.
For as much love as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild gets, it's plain to see that Super Mario Odyssey is the Switch's true "killer app". VERY highly recommended.

I've never played the N64/GameCube-era games like Mario Sunshine, but did have Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 on Wii. Of course, I'm old enough that I played the original Mario games when they first came out in the 80s, so it's really nice to see all of my memories blended together in Odyssey! It has tons of charm, challenge, and color to enjoy for a long time.

If I could give this game 10 stars, I would. You can be anyone in this game, and do so much. It's a combination of all Marios put together. And playing on the go is so much fun. The Pro controller is better for game play, but aside from the campaign, there's a lot to do. Every Switch owner needs to buy this, and it's a great reason to buy a Switch.

An incredible Mario journey that looks amazing. The game appeals to both younger players, and older players looking for a challenge. The challenge is more collecting all Power Moons on every level, but the game's "campaign" difficulty is what you can expect from a Mario game.

After not playing or even being interested in a Mario game since Mario Galaxy, I can say with confidence that Mario Odyssey renewed my love for Mario games. Such a wonderful, delightful game to play. So many moons to collect, and the figuring out how to string together the different movement types can make anybody feel like a pro. Would buy again!

My favorite mario has always been Mario 64. The Mario sunshine and the galaxy’s just didn’t itch the scratch I had for a true 64 sequel. Odyssey is as close to a sequel as you’re going to get. I really enjoyed it and still have plenty of hours left in the game. The main story is a little short, and easy for my taste, but it’s truly a masterpiece.

If you like Super Mario 64, this is basically that game but on a much, much larger scale. Mario controls great and there are tons and tons of secrets to find and objectives to complete. The game is incredibly fun, although it is also quite easy. Capturing enemies is fun and their powers make the game feel fresh constantly. Would highly recommend!
