This game is the reason I got a Nintendo Switch, very fun and takes advantage of the joycon's ability to split. I've only played with 4 people on the same console, but it supports up to eight players. Controls are easy enough for my 4 year old to play, but timing, balancing, items, and levels, create a challenge for even seasoned players. Story mode is not as good as the wii's version, but the story's challenges are interesting, but lack the co-op. Unlocking characters while doing just casual fights felt rewarding, since it allowed for you to try out a new fighter, and a couple fights later another challenger appeared and you get to try that new character. There is a co-op online quick match which is a plus, but no co-op vs online friends. I purchased this game mostly for party play at home, so the online features are not as important to me. Overall 10/10

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lives up to its name. The level of care, attention to detail, and the unrivaled quantity of content in this game is astounding. For anyone who grew up as a gamer, there is something to love about this game. Its soundtrack alone is so expansive that it accounts for nearly 30 consecutive hours of music. The core hook of the game's single player content is World of Light, an adventure mode that features a large overworld map replete with battles to fight under unique conditions. As you win battles, you gain the game's equivalent of experience points to level up your team, as well as "Spirits." Spirits are still images of more than 1,200 characters from numerous games. Each grants a modifier, such as immunity to stage-specific hazards like fire, and they can be freely swapped out. Like Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: Breath of the Wild before it, Smash Bros. is a quick pick-up-and-play experience. You can jump into Spirits mode, do a battle or two, and get a sense of accomplishment. It's intelligently designed to work with the play anywhere mentality around which the Switch as a console is focused. In addition to World of Light, there are traditional modes like Classic and All Stars. Some of the characters' classic mode quests will end with a unique boss battle; others end with Smash series bosses Master Hand and Crazy Hand. It isn't strong enough to encourage 74 playthroughs, but it is fun to do a few times through to experience the different end bosses. Multiplayer is frantic and chaotic, allowing players to play together with one console or against each other online. The online, unfortunately, isn't great. Low connection speeds can really hinder the experience, and there are not enough options to limit your online choices to simple 1v1 battles. Recognizing online's shortcomings, Smash Ultimate is really an incredible game. I've long believed that after the single player content well has dried up in a Smash game, it's the couch multiplayer that keeps people coming back. Smash Ultimate is a fast, frantic party-style fighting game. It is fun to play and is strongly recommended for every Switch owner.

My 7 year old son loves to replay this game repeatedly. He has 100% cleared the main story mode several times. He begged me to purchase all the expansion pass content from the Nintendo Switch eShop so I obliged. The 80 or so selectable fighters total with expansion pass doubled or tripled the replay value for my son’s enjoyment. This is a 10/10 game for my son and I to play together anytime anywhere. This game is a love letter to Nintendo players and video game history too with all of the easter eggs to discover. Highly recommend it for any Switch owner.

I've played Smash since the original came out on the N64. I've always loved it and ultimate is no exception. The only thing I don't like is how many characters there are now. Variety is great and all, but at a certain point I think it gets to be too much. I'd still recommend it to anyone who loves fightng games and wants a way to entertain people at a party or game night

70+ characters. 100+ levels. this a great 2D fighting game in the mold of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, etc. The difference is that this one is very family-friendly where the object is to Smash your opponent off of the screen. You can do anything from 1v1 to 4v4. Another great party game on the Switch.

This was my son’s Christmas gift along with the switch. All my nieces and nephews were glued to the TV playing the game on the big screen. They were able to fight each other all at the same time without the screen being split! It was great seeing them all laughing while playing this game!

Honestly this truly is the "ultimate" Smash Bros. The menus and options are vastly improved from previous titles, making it much easier to navigate around and set up matches with specific rulesets. The classic mode has a unique experience for each fighter. Not everyone gets a great one, but there are a handful that honor the game of that fighter perfectly. Adventure Mode/Spirits is really pretty fun. It's similar to event matches from previous titles, with unique scenarios and rules for each match. Adventure has you do these fights along a set path. There are all sorts of directions and ways to go but they all end up having the same result in the end. By defeating these matches you receive a spirit, which can boost stats and provide buffs when equipped. The spirits board allows you to just pick from a list of 8 that are on a set refresh timer. In this mode, however, you cannot retry without using a consumable and you must 'play' a short timing game to unlock them. Now, if spirits and classic mode are the side dishes, it makes the gameplay a perfect steak. Hands down it is the best smash has felt since melee (probably even better). It finds the perfect balance of speed, damage, knock back, and insanity. Because of the gameplay changes, it's so easy for anyone from a first timer to a competitive player to pick up and go. And although at a competitive level it's impossible to balance a 70+ character roster perfectly, casually and even most more serious players have a chance to win the match no matter who they choose. I hope they add more fighters, stages, modes, and whatever else Sakurai thinks up in the years to come. This is my favorite game of all time bar none. Nintendo managed to create the most beautiful painting I've ever seen, and they've only just finished the frame. Go buy it

This game is so fun to play with the family. I find my son doesn’t get bored with it as theres a lot going on. He’s learning about so many of the older Nintendo characters which is fun for us too.

Timeless game! This is my favorite game out of all the switch games. The story mode has enough battles to keep you playing for weeks. My four year can even play the brawl mode with me. All ages will love.

Smash Ultimate is definitely the ultimate super smash bros game with over 70 characters, tons of stages, and lots more. It plays faster than Smash Bros for Wii U and I already like it better. Looks and plays great, and it's fun to play with friends or online.
