You can play on TV, you can play handheld, and you can even play a very limited VR with the Nintendo Labo kit. You can play games where your movement controls the player, you can play with a pro controller (recommended), you can play with joy-cons (attached or detached but be careful with the joystick). You can play alone or you can play with friends. There are great titles for all ages too, like Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros, Witcher 3, and Luigi's Mansion 3.

switch from handheld to tv
