I switched from an older Android model to the 521 because I was tired of smartphones being smart and good as mini computer but failing too often as phone, its primary purpose. This phone works great, has stable software, just enough apps to survive but overall it is a great buy. I can recommend it

Purchased this phone with $70. As a smartphone, you cannot beat the price. Microsoft still needs to work on its app market. Make sure the app you want are available before switching to this phone.

    Limited windows phone

Not sure why so many rave reviews. The Nokia Lumia 521 is lacking in many different departments. The camera is average with no flash either, so good luck taking pictures in dim lit places. After a month or so, the battery needs to be charged sometimes twice a day with no real apps running nor games. Worst of all are the live tiles (homescreen). Apps such as Whatsapp and Skype don't show any notifications on the homescreen. The programs must be manually opened to see any notifications. Overall the windows OS is very limited as it provides very few customizations.

Broke my original phone and I needed a cheap replacement. For $49, it gets the job done without breaking the bank.

This phone is great for just for calls (WiFI calling is very useful), texts (WiFi calling works for text, too), and email. Windows 8 is very disappointing, not only it lacks apps. Simple features like rotation lock, or volume control for ringer, media, alarm, etc isn't available. Not enough memory on the phone, apps crash all the time.

A great leap backwards in real mobile usability

Imagine everything terrible about the Microsoft/Windows way on your phone. It is just a regression. My first cell phone, way back in 2000 had a MUCH more intuitive and USEFUL user interface. Everything is difficult, and it seems like no real person ever tested this phone. The apps are junk. I can't find a good music playback app, and I shouldn't have to look. User interface is a technology like any other, and advances have been made. It's 2014, and Microsoft is BAFFLED about how to make a simple, useable music player. But this is one example. Everything about this phone is stupid. The dialer is not linked to the address book, so you can't just start dialing a number or name and get that pulled up. So you have to go into the address book, and you end up hitting 4 BUTTONS, plus the characters you want to search to call a contact. EVERY TIME! The end button on the touch screen is right next to other buttons, with all of this white space above it. So they set the matches next to the dynamite, on half the screen. IT IS VERY VERY HARD TO MAKE A PHONE CALL. I am sorry to yell, but why?? Why Microsoft?!? Why?????? I think there are two address books. I develop web apps, and I was the guy you could call if you forgot how to do something in MS-DOS, and I am not sure (what I means is that I know my way around some user interfaces. I THINK there are two address books. It is not like I am expecting the world here. I bought this as a bridge between more expensive phones. It is not that the phone doesn't 'work.' It does stuff, and it has features. But they are all terrible. This phone is the result of a legion of soon-to-be-unemployed programmers at Microsoft trying to reinvent the phone/app/user interface FROM SCRATCH, and crashing into the side of a mountain where orphans are having a picnic. I could go on.

WP 8 only major browser supported is IE and it's HORRIBLE. Do not buy this phone if you need even basic web browser function. You cannot customize the phone's sounds other than a few basics. The functions are cumbersome and years behind in technology of Android or Apple.

The error says: we can't connect at this moment please try later ! So I googled it and I found that it is a common promblem for Nokia users. I am going to return this phone . I have no idea !!!!
