    good but issues

lets start off by saying the picture quality is good. Eye catching colors and smooth motion. the interface is snappy and plays well with all apps. That being said lets move on to the deal breakers. The screen has trouble detecting HDR and Dolby Vision when playing the right content. Most of the time it works but then goes for a spell where it does not work or detect HDR content. The other main issue is the poor remote. You have to be in direct line of sight for it to work, and thats if it works then. I have a to press the buttons on the remote 2 to 4 times before it connects and works. to me this not acceptable. I should knock off another star for that alone, but the picture is what makes this tv. my advise is to go with another brand or the 6 series.

      Hi tmac,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. In addition to the remote that comes with your TV, you can download the free Roku mobile app on your Smartphone or tablet to use as a remote. Through the Roku mobile app, you gain access to power toggle, volume toggle, private listening, voice search, and more. Additionally, the problem you have described with the TV having trouble detecting Dolby and HDR content sounds rather odd. We would be more than happy to look into this to see what we can do to try to help you. In order for us to assist we first need to gather more information. Please reach out to us at [email protected] with your contact information and reference this review, and someone will get back to you right away.

    49 inch Roku TCL Television

The color is superb! I purchased a Sony first, brought it back due to too smaller size.. Bought Samsung, and the color was terrible, picture quality blurred. I was ready to spend 1000 on a set which would give me what I felt was excellent quality. A friend recommended this, and at 399.00 I thought, "No way .. too cheap! And WHO ARE THEY anyway?" I went to her house to view hers. I was on my way to the local BEST BUY immediately.. I LOVE this set! And recommend that people do NOT pay attention to the price on one hand and "Too inexpensive to be of excellent quality, and DO on the other for LOW price is deceiving, it is the BEST!. Thank you! I bought the 49 inch version of this television for my basement and it looks really nice. I bought a way more expensive Vizio three years ago and I'd say it rivals it nicely. The built in Roku is awesome and the menus navigate nicely- no clunky smart tv menus. The ability to connect to the Roku app is nice because you can control the television and volume anywhere in the house. I'm sure more expensive televisions have this and that, but don't hesitate with this TV if you're looking for a nice budget TV. I don't use the feature, but if you plug a USB stick into the tv and use the antenna, you can pause live television.

    TCL 49” 5 Series TV

Since I already own 2 Roku Stream Sticks, I already knew and loved the Roku Smart platform. After much research, I landed on this TV. It’s in a back room, so I didn’t want something too large. This is perfect! Great picture, which I adjusted easily the settings menu. Clear, sharp, nice color. Responsive smart platform, and once I logged in, all my favorites showed right up. Very bargain price (on sale, too). Major win! Very happy with this purchase. Only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is the mediocre sound quality, which is still ok but not amazing. I will explore some speaker options next, but it’s not an emergency. Worth the extra $50 over the 4 series.

    Frustrating

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have heard a lot of great things about TCL TVs and when I heard about this new 5 series and everything that comes built into this TV, I wanted to jump on it. Unfortunately, it’s been frustrating. The good: -I primarily got this for gaming. And for that, it’s pretty darn impressive. XBOX One and PS4 4K and HDR content looks great (after some basic setting adjustments.) If I were only using the TV for that, this would be a five star review. -Roku OS is very well thought out. You do have to deal with annoying ads and it seems like you have fewer picture customization options than other similar TVs, but overall it’s still a highlight. The bad and frustrating: -I’ll cut right to it – Dolby Vision is terrible on this TV. I have Dolby Vision on another TV and it looks awesome. Here it’s so distracting, I can’t watch any content that supports Dolby Vision. When I play a UHD movie from Vudu, which supports Dolby Vision or UHD content from Netflix, which has both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, the issue happens every single time. It may be happening with HDR10, but it’s not nearly as noticeable. It is however, painfully noticeable with Dolby Vision. The movie/show being streamed constantly adjusts its brightness/content. If a scene gets a little darker, the brightness/contrast seems to jump up and wash everything out. When the scene gets brighter or there’s mixed lighting within a scene, the brightness/contrast drops down. This can sometimes happen numerous times within the same scene… sometimes a character movement within a scene triggers it. If you press the * button on the remote to bring up picture settings, you can see the white font on the menu constantly increase and decrease its brightness alongside the movie. I tried to find options to turn this off, but nothing works. There are some settings that you can’t adjust because Dolby Vision controls those settings while enabled. It’s one of the most distracting features I’ve ever seen – it makes enjoying a movie/show near impossible. I’d be shocked to find out this was an actual built-in feature. I went to my local Best Buy to talk to employees to gain some insight, but they didn’t have any experience with this TV. I called TCL customer support and they just kept insisting this was due to my poor internet connection. My other TV is downstairs and streams 4K content without an issue (at 100mbs). This TV is in the same room as the router. I’ve tested wireless and wired and get the same results. TCL support didn’t seem very interested in this – just kept insisting this happens when you have a poor internet connection (which I don’t.) Based on the fact that support claims the problem is my end and I know that’s just not the case, I’ll be returning this TV. And I’m not very happy about that. Like I said, gaming is fantastic. But since all the Dolby Vision content is unwatchable, I can’t justify keeping this.

Sorry for the frustration you’re having with your TV. One setting you might want to try turning off if it’s not too late, is dynamic contrast in advanced picture settings. If that doesn’t help you can contact my customer advocacy team in Corona California for more help. What you’re describing is definitely not normal. You can reach them at [email protected], and provide them with your contact information. Someone will get back to you right away to help. Thanks, TCL Support

Read many reviews from "Experts" who were concerned with black levels, edge lighting vs full-array panels, and other aspects of the 5-series vs sets costing hundreds more. I've spent a couple days over the weekend watching 4K HDR content, HD content and SD content. I am so glad I wasn't influenced by the ney-sayers! This TV is awesome. Dolby Vision makes for an awesome viewing experience. I got this for a bedroom and was also convinced after expert reviews that I'd need a sound bar. I might add one eventually, but for a bedroom it is completely fine. If you're a regular sort, and not a techno-wizard, I'd jump on a 5-series before they are gone.

Great 4K HDR TV for the price

This TV is a great purchase for the price. I got it the other day for $400 and I don't regret it at all. I have not watched any Dolby Vision content yet, but I have watched multiple episodes of Altered Carbon, which has HDR support. Roku TV is a plus as well since I don't have to turn on my PS4 Pro if I want to watch Hulu or Netflix. I also have a 4K non-HDR TV, and it makes a difference having HDR. I also played a few HDR games; including Horizon Zero Dawn and Final Fantasy XV. HDR seemed to have a decent impact on both games, with Horizon being slightly more noticeable. If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive 4K HDR TV, then this is a great purchase.

I have had this TV for a few months now, and it is an amazing value for the TV you get. The Roku integration is fantastic, the picture is fantastic. I've only watched a few things in full 4K, but even watching 1080 is fantastic. My only real complaint is the Dolby controlled brightness, I have a very slight deadspot compared to the rest of the tv in one spot, but it's not bad enough to detract my feelings on this TV.

Love this tv. Great picture and am very happy to have the pause /rewind feature with a 16 Gbara thumbdrive. Was bummed by no on timer but it is not a problem if you have Alexa. I linked the Roku app to the Alexa skill and now have custom schedules to turn it on and off depending on Weekday or weekend. Much better than a timer. Replaces a 43 xbr800d Sony that had the always rebooting Android tv. This is much better. Sound is fine for the bedroom.

Great tv and picture AFTER calibration. Remember you're buying a budget 4k set. Best buy sells the 515 version versus the 517 version, which lacks voice control and any motion settings within the tv (auto motion, that soap opera picture movement). I was unaware upon purchasing as it isn't stated anywhere and very few reviews state it either. Overall it looks great and it's an amazing set for the price. Major step up from the 405 due to peak brightness.

Great 4K HDR, very impressed with the build quality, exceptional visual display, beautiful game play with an Xbox One X. Movies look stunning in 4K and 1080P. Roku menu is easy to use and quick on inputs. My only complaint is after 90 days of use, already developed green stuck or dead pixels. A little frustrating to spend $450 and already showing defects. Didn’t get the extended warranty, I doubt TCL will replace or fix over a handful of dead or stuck pixels within the 12 month manufacturing warranty. Unfortunately I won’t be purchasing any TCL tv products in the future. This is the second TCL in less than 6 months to develop dead or stuck pixels. Luckily the last TCL series 4 49” I bought from Best Buy I was able to return it after a few days of use for a different brand 4K tv.

I just warned a friend about Sling TV. They also bought a Roku TCL a month after me. The TV is superb and so simple to use. No regrets other than using Sling. It has a crude interface and requires an antenna for local programming. Explore other options for streaming. SLING will automatically charge you for the succeeding month. Best of luck , my friends!

    Almost perfect

I wish I could give this tv 5 stars but i can't, like the title says, this TV is almost perfect. I love how it has Roku built inside of it and offers all the streaming services I need, but there is one big problem and that is the Panel itself. It looks good for the most part, but off to the top right of the screen there is a...dark area, its not noticeable at all when you're watching something in widescreen but its totally noticeable in full screen formats and also in bright scenes, Its really noticeable when i'm gaming. I've tried adjusting the brightness and everything to make it go away but nothing works, you can't really see it when you are standing right infront of the screen but you can notice it at normal viewing distance. it wouldn't be a bother all that much if it was in the corner a bit or something like that but it is close to the middle of the screen. I think i paid good money for this TV and i expect the panel quality to be a bit better. I am thinking about returning it in exchange for a different brand. Such a shame, everything else about this TV is great, i guess i just got a bad one.

Seemed like an okay TV. The remote doesn't have numbers to select channels, but would scroll quickly and in time I think I would get used to it. Lots of internet options if you are a cord cutter. My problem was that stations that broadcast with a "Secondary Audio Program (SAP)" would be broadcast in the secondary language and it couldn't be changed to English. My Spanish wasn't good enough to understand the football announcers. TCL support couldn't help but said that ROKU might have a software update later that will solve the problem. Rather than wait, I am returning the TV. The Styrofoam packing pieces were marked, making it easy to repack th TV.
