    Tv has great picture but.....

I bought this tv about 1 month ago. It is excellent for gaming and has amazing picture quality for the money. When i first bought it, i was thinking about upgrading all my tv’s to TCL’s. The roku portion is extremely easy to use and it is very user friendly. So why the two star rating.....the reason is that the HDMI ARC port does not work. I bought a Vizio 5.1 surround system with it, and it worked for three days. Now there is no sound coming from the system. It does not even recognize that it is connected. I first thought it was the soundbar, so i disconnected it and plugged it in to my upstairs Sony. It worked perfectly fine. So than i bought a new HDMI cable, and connected it back to the TCL tv. It still didnt work. I quickly contacted TCL support and troubleshooted with them. They couldnt figure out the problem, so they very graciously sent a brand new TV with a technician. The technician arrived and hooked up the tv and tested it with me. Amazingly the HDMI ARC was working and producing sound. I turned off the TV and came back the next night, and again there is no sound at all coming from the soundbar and the tv isnt recognizing that there is something in the HDMI ARC port. I know that it is not the soundbar because it was working on another tv and i can use the optical port and sound does come out with the roku tv. What I am not happy about is upon emailing them again with the same case number, i have gotten barely any response from them. It has been a week and a half and all conversation has stopped. This is ridiculous, i bought a tv for it to work like a new tv, not to have defective software or not work like it is intended. Buy at your own risk!!!

DO NOT confuse this model with 49S517

I thought all Series 5 (and 6) TCLs had remotes with voice controls. However, this set (49S515) does not have remote with voice control (nor does the 65R615). For some reason Best Buy does not stock (and did not suggest they could order) the S517 model. I love the TCL sets, but to switch input modes with voice controls between streaming, antenna and other over the air antenna, you need the S517 (or S617 for 65 inch).

No web - no PC connection-no voice remote

I should have read the specs more carefully. This isn't really a smart TV like my Sony. It does not connect to the web - no surfing or reading emails. That wasn't so bad, but I did want to connect to my PC media server so that I could stream video and audio from my PC no way. I will have keep using my DVD player to do this. I was hoping to avoid this and just use the TV like I can with my pretty old Sony TV. Lastly, I thought this was the same model that was being sold on Amazon, but this is an S515 not an S517. This two digit difference means that you get a downgraded remote with no voice control. My old Harmony remote also does not work with this model. I guess I just need to be satisfied having Amazon video and Roku.

I've had this tv since Feb 2019. The picture and sound is fine. Since day one the television would randomly NOT turn on (the power light illuminates yet no picture shows). The remedy is to unplug the tv. So, over the last 2 years I've unplugged this tv so often that I can now do it with my eyes closed. I wish I'd returned it years ago.

I returned a 55" vizio P 2018 as it had some problems but the picture was fantastic. This tcl 49" is much easier to use but the picture is no where as good as the vizio, maybe the 6 series is a big jump. It's a great buy for the price but missing the stunning clarity of the vizio.

Bought the tv last year (and a week ago to be exact) and what do you know! The tv screen stops working though you can hear sounds of remote working. Called tcl support only for them to tell me that they don’t know what’s wrong and I have to cover the repair (to which there is no physical damage) myself. What a rip off. This tv just so happens to have technical issues a week after the warranty is up. Don’t waste your money

I bought this TV on 7/1/19 for a room where we occasionally watch TV. We did enjoy portions of HBO's Chernobyl on this set; but alas, the set now just shows a black screen after 3 short months... I had read that TCL quality was questionable, but was taken in by the price and built-in Roku.

    Disappointed

I was so excited to purchase a new TV after my 11 year old TV needed replacing. I looked at reviews and websites and narrrowed my choice down and finally chose TCL 49" 5 Series. The excitement died as I continue to watch liveTV via cable, antenna and streaming service. The picture is no better than our cheap 32" 1080 store brand TV in the bed room. The blacks in background is horrible--so splotchy and blotchy if that is a word. You see the little box like shapes of different shades of blacks and it is especially poor when there is light or white in the picture the black areas around are extremely spotty. The other issue is finding the right settings. I looked and many calibrations online and tried several but something would always be off---cloudiness, reds super brite, dim looking, or overcompensated brightness. I shouldn't have to spend so much time figuring out how to set up the thing. For those reasons I am returning it. I am even questioning whether the 4K HDR stuff is even worth purchasing maybe just stick with highend 1080 HD.

The Roku TCL TV is fine until a moth or bug decides to get in between the outer glass and the screen. They are there forever. This happened the first few days I had my new tv. Best Buy Warranty will not cover it, manufacture will not cover it and basically said to bad, nothing they could do and they probably enter through the speakers. Today there are sever knats and small moths stuck inside the screen. So, if you live where there are insects I would not buy as you end up with black polka-dots between the glass and screen and it's annoying as can be. Terrible customer service.

      Hello Desert Diva,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We're sorry to hear about your TV and your experience thus far. Our TVs are designed to give our customers years of entertainment and enjoyment. You can visit https://www.tclusa.com/support/warranty to find more information on our warranty requirements and limitations. Regrettably, insect infestation is not covered by the manufacture's warranty. If you purchased an extended warranty, you may want to reach out to see if they cover this and see if you can file a warranty claim through the extended warranty. Best of luck!

    Will not access the internet.

This tv will only access the preloaded TCL chosen sites such as Netflix or Amazon prime. There are a number of sites but it you want to go to a site such as google or anyplace else this TV will not do it. I spoke with support and they confirmed it. So if you want to go on the web do not buy this. I believe TVL willfully chose not to note this in their descriptions and the Best Buy salesmen did not mention this - a major omission on his part. I am off to Best Buy to see what recourse I have with two of these

      Hi canceleer,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. This TV has access to thousands of streaming channels, and over 500,000 movies and TV episodes to fulfill almost any streaming need. You can go to www.Roku.com/whats-on to see what streaming channels and apps are offered through the Roku Channel Store. To search for a specific channel you would simply want to enter that information into the search section. Furthermore, while our TVs do not feature a web browser, you can screen mirror compatible Android and Windows phones to the TV. This way you can search on your phone, but view on the TV. Hope this helps! Thank you, TCL Customer Support

Tv was used a few times a week for just over 12 months (when the warranty expired of course) and got its first vertical line of dead pixels down the entire screen. 2 months after that, there are 2 more vertical lines of dead pixels. Waste of money in the long run. Avoid!!!
