Good Idea On Paper - In Real Life? Not So Much
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I recently moved to a new inner-loop apartment complex in Houston. The walls are pretty thick and there are two small windows in my particular unit. I had used an RCA amplified antenna at my last complex but for this new apartment I needed something stronger. I saw this flat, flexible unit at a Best Buy store and thought I'd give it a try. You attach it to your window and it has a built-in amplifier. Sounds good, right? The membrane, in theory, is closest to the outside of the building being mounted to the window. The trouble is, I couldn't get all the channels I wanted reliably, all of the time. The two weakest channels were 13 (KTRK) and 57 (KUBE). Channel 11 (KHOU) came in, but was uneven. Channel 2 (KPRC) came in reasonably well, and all the channels above 20 (20, 26, 39) and their subchannels (Antenna TV, etc.) were fine. Houston, though, is a HUGE city. At over 600 square miles, there's lots of ground to cover. Nearly all the TV stations' transmitters are near Missouri City, which is southwest of the city's center. I am about 16 miles from Missouri City, and Houston/Harris County has flat terrain. If you live in a smaller city or closer to your market's transmitters, you may have better luck than me. Check the web site Antenna Web . org for helpful information. I wound up returning the Terk unit and exchanged it for a Clearstream 2V unit, which runs about $30 more at $100. The Clearstream is much larger and bulkier but it works better, especially with a separate external amplifier which I had used previously.
