Hypnotically Beautiful
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is by Damon Albarn and his new group. Overall,it is quite different from Demon Days by the Gorillaz and, for fans of Paul Simonon, it sounds nothing like the Clash. In fact, it sounds like no other group I can think of. Clearly the work of seasoned veterans of the music scene, it is a beautifully crafted concept album. It is definitely not a singles album but rather a series of songs that flow together. The lyrics are simple and spare but suit the mood of the music, especially on "Northern Whale" where the electronic background makes it sound like the song of a whale joining in. Because of the quality of the musicians and the way electronic flourishes are worked into the songs, it is not at all boring (as one listener on Amazon had put it who was apparently expecting something similar to other works) but almost hypnotic to listen to, even on many repeated listenings.
