To be blunt, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is arguably the best Zelda game ever made and it's definitely the most ambitious. Nintendo has outdone themselves, you have to hand it to them. There is very little negative to say about this game. Let's do a break down of the pros and cons.
Pros:
+Best Zelda story to date. Yes, it may be the same premise, but there is much more depth this time around. There are other things going on, not just Link rescuing Zelda. All of the side quests add so much to the main story. The depth is what makes the game succeed.
+Voice acting adds a lot to some of the characters we already know and love, including Zelda herself. It makes for a richer and more interesting story.
+Gameplay is king in Zelda games. We all know this. BOTW is no different. There is a ton of gameplay variety, more than there has ever been. Everything from fighting, exploring, cooking, transportation, it's all been either improved or newly introduced.
+Open World and Exploration are front and center in BOTW. The open world design allows you take whatever path you choose. While most Zelda games in the past were linear, this is not the same. Whatever approach you prefer is completely fine. The freedom really shines through in BOTW.
+The beautiful art style makes up for anything lacking in the graphics department. The Wii U and Switch are not on par with the PS4 and Xbox One, so don't expect that type of beauty, but the art style truly does make a big difference. Nintendo has always been king when it comes to gorgeous art and design. Exploration is one of the game's biggest draws. Conquering the 100+ shrines is amazing!
+Wii U and Switch versions offer choice for the gamer. You don't have to upgrade to the Switch to experience BOTW. The Wii U version is every bit as great as the Switch one. In fact, I owned the Switch version but got rid of it in favor of the Wii U version. I did not see the point in upgrading since the only other Switch game I care about is Mario Odyssey and that doesn't come out for almost another year.
+More than 100 hours of gameplay offers major value (in your wallet) and replay value. There is always something to see and do!
+The game world is absolutely huge. This lends itself to many hours of fun, whether you are doing side quests, the main quests, shrines, or goofing off.
+Challenging and thought provoking puzzles are a standout in BOTW. Every shrine has a challenging puzzle, while most boss battles require you to solve a puzzle as well.
+Cooking is really fun. Doing recipes is a blast, just experimenting with food can be an interesting distraction.
+Great A.I., from the main characters, townsfolk and enemies.
+Use the Wii U Pro controller for the best experience. It is more tight and comfortable than the GamePad. I don't have experience with the Switch Pro Controller (probably because it's $70!) but I am sure it's superior to the Joy-Cons and Grip.
Cons:
-Weapons break a lot, maybe too much. I found that a lot of my time was devoted to changing weapons, whether in a battle or not. It's not a game-breaker but it is an annoyance.
Overall, Zelda BOTW is an all time great. It's a game you must experience and have in your collection. I bought the Wii U version, but the choice is yours. Go out and buy it to experience something you will never forget!

BUY IT!
Let's just start right there.... don't think twice, don't hesitate, buy the game. It is absolutely the best game of the series ever.( yeah traditional list will still say Ocarina is...it's not, not anymore. But that's an argument for other forums )
Breath of the Wild is an absolute breath of fresh air. It keeps so many of the ZELDA traditions, reframing them in a new manner, all while adding so much to the series. i could go on and on in long paragraphs about the brilliance of this ame, but let me make the review easier to read for those of you on the fence.
Pros
100%open world...seriously after the intro that serves as a tutorial you could head strait for the final boss if you wanted, but the difficulty makes him almost impossible to beat.
Massive world. It's huge. Maybe the biggest open world we have ever seen.
Go anyplace. See a mountain? Head for it and climb to the peak...follow the river, tromp through the woods, explore ruins, search for shrines. Seriously do whatever you want.
The shrines ....think of them as 120 brain teasing mind bending puzzles that reward you at the end if your skilled enough to get through them.
The Devine beast- think classic dungeon exploring in ZELDA.
Graphics- the game has a beautiful animated style.
Do what you want... climb a mountain glide down. Swim. see a horse, deer, or even bear, sneak up on it hop on its back and ride it.
The variety of gear-so much gear...and you'll need it weapons break, shields break. Your outfits won't, but you'll need different armor to help protect from the cold, and heat.
Hours of game play- if your like me you can play this game for well over 100hours if you explore for everything hidden in this game.
Difficulty- game will challenge even long time gamers. You will die...a lot!
Cons
Cooking....the part I hate the most in this game is cooking. It's not so much that it's in the game..it's cool to take the stuff you find and cook it up to restore health and give you various stat boosts. No my hatred for it is in how they implemented it! The added steps of having to open inventory, select hold on items, then back out, then cook is annoying and time consuming. The inability to cook multiple dishes at a time is also annoying. This mechanics needed streamlined.
Difficulty - you will die...A LOT! If your a novice gamer expect to die a lot. heck, if your a long time amer expect to die a lot. There are some extremely challenging enemies at times and the game may be too hard for younger players at times.
Rain- I live that it can effect you while playing...makings climbing way harder, almost impossible at times..and lightning, don't get me started...you can get struck by it. My problem with it though is that it almost rains too much...and it always happens when I have something huge to climb! Ugghhh!
That's it really. I can't think of anything else that is a negative.
This game is easily the best I've played in 2017 so far. And while I have played some great games in the past this game immediately jumps to all time great stays..maybe the best game of all time. I can't suggest this game enough. And if my review isn't enough just do a quick internet search and see all the perfect scores it has received. It's a brilliant games in every aspect.
BUY IT NOW!!!

Fantastic Open World Game; Best Game for Switch

This game is amazing. It's beautiful, has a good story, is challenging, fun, sometimes quirky (in a good way), and has garnered my attention almost every day since the day I bought it. I have an XBox, Playstation, and Switch and the XBox dominated my game playing for years. I played the other consoles from time to time, but I never focused on the others for a specific period of time without going back to the XBox. Since buying this game I haven't touched the XBox or Playstation.
I knew this game was good from reviews, but I was not prepared for how much I would enjoy playing it. In the beginning there was a lot of frustration with weapons breaking, learning the combat system (dodges and parries are everything in this game), and not having the right clothes for the right environment. Once you learn these, the game becomes much more fun.
Also, there is a lot of flexibility with the environment. It can be used in combat situations quite effectively and certain environmental items collected from fallen enemies can have interesting effects. The game itself lets you go where you want, when you want. It's not linear at all. That may be daunting if your used to going from point A to point B and being told what to do.
This game will easily soak up hours of your life and keep you coming back. I highly recommend it. My favorite open world game is Assassin's Creed Odyssey, however this game has quickly become my second favorite and in time, might exceed my current favorite. I am still just over a couple weeks into playing the game.

I really wasnt into Zelda games till Skyward Sword and BOTW. I adore most open worlds. This game did not fail my expectations. Beautiful game. Great story. Indepth look into Zelda herself. Ganon can be as hard or easy as you desire. The one sub boss was quit challenging... Compared to the other 3. Fun little side quests. The one power Link acquires, stasis, is annoying to get used to. And yes, all weapons but one breaks. But, I am very pleased.

Being a huge Zelda fan since playing the very first one, going in I was very skeptical about all the changes they made and how different BoTW is...but this game is amazing. The open world is inviting with a ton of different side quests and exploring to do (I'm about 50 hours in and really haven't done any of the main quests yet), the graphics are beautiful, and the music is refreshing. The only thing I currently have against this game is how quickly the weapons break. It's annoying but it really does force you to use more strategy when fighting any enemy instead of just hacking away. I haven't experienced any of the frame rate issues other reviews I've read mentioned, nor have I experienced any issues with the left JoyCon (but I could just be lucky so far). Overall this is one of the few games I would say is without a doubt worth the $60.

Background - As a lifetime fan of the LoZ franchise I knew I would be purchasing this game one way or another, the only question being at which end of the spectrum would this game fall. Would it be one of the greats, like Wind Waker or Twilight Princess, would it under perform like Skyward Sword or PH/ST, or possibly, could we see another triumphant masterpiece to the tune of Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, or ALttP?
To be honest, it's very hard to place this game. Stand it up to the vast array of triple A titles on the Switch today and it's a masterpiece, there's no contest. But when you hold it up to the other games within their storied library, it's harder to find the right place for it. If you're reading this you've already been doing your homework and there's honestly not any gripes I can mention that you haven't already read. For a franchise steeped in story telling and lore, it really takes a backseat in this game. Not that that's a bad thing in my opinion, especially considering just how much game play this thing packs. I'll admit this is the second time I've purchased this game, first time being on WiiU. On that note I can attest this game does run better on the Switch. (Only issues on WiiU being fps drops within villages/towns.)
The Good - You can literally climb any mountain/building/surface (provided it's not raining), there're endless combinations of ingredients you can slap together to cook up a glorious adventuring meal, a vast open world that acts more like a physics playground than a typical rpg open world. A wide arsenal of weaponry, plenty of treasure to hunt and bosses to fight, wild horses to tame, puzzles to solve, and quests to accomplish. There's a lot of game here and it keeps you invested. A solid play-through can run you anywhere from 2-6 weeks or more, or you could be a complete sadist and charge at the final boss 20 minutes after starting a new game. Just the sheer variety in ways to dispatch foes or traverse the landscape alone open this game up to near infinite possibilities and alot of replay-ability.
The Bad - This is where you've heard it all before. There are alot of complaints when it comes to the destructible weapons, and while it can be annoying, especially when you find one you really like, I prefer it than in most RPG's when you have chests full of weapons you never even use. This feature keeps you constantly on the hunt for sharp pointy things. There does feel like a lack of npcs, but considering this story is almost post apocalyptic, I am easier to forgive this as well.
However, there is a lack of story, especially for a Zelda game. Much of the games plot or character development takes place within flashbacks, or "memories". While this is a unique concept for the franchise, it definitely creates a disconnection between us as the players and these very vibrant characters that were obviously well thought out and designed. It seems like an odd choice to put so much effort into these individuals then lock them behind 3-5 minute cut scenes sprinkled across the map.
Lastly, the worst contender for me is the severe lack in enemy variety. You have about 4-5 different flesh and blood enemy types with different color variants for difficulties, and a couple synthetic enemy types. For such a large game it gets old slaying the same type of foe over and over.
All in all though I still score this game very highly. I had a full play through on WiiU when the game released, completely replayed the whole thing when Master Mode came out,and am now on my 3rd play through on Master Mode on Switch. The replay ability and constant freshness really keeps this game alive. If you have the opportunity to check this game out and were on the fence ffs give it a chance!

I've been a fan, no fanatic, of the series since first getting that golden cartridge for the NES. And, I haven't been this excited about a new Zelda since 1998!
Straight forward gameplay and controls, of which I highly recommend getting the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to play Zelda, way more comfortable then the Joy-Con.
The visuals are excellent. I am very much relieved that this anime style is not that of Wind Waker, not a fan.
My only complaint so for is in the beginning of the game weapons and shields are very fragile. You will go through a lot of your melee weapons and bows to start, and although it does get better, a meter or even a status bar for the condition of your weapon or shield would have been very helpful. It's a minor gripe, I know.
Fun open world adventure!
Get it, you won't regret it!

I dont like most open world games, they become boring quickly to me. The only exception up until now was skyrim, which i still enjoy. The breath of the wild makes the player want to explore the world. Even when on a direct mission i found myself giving in to the irresistible urge to check out every aspect of the landscape. The play mechanics are pretty much what you expect if you're a zelda veteran and, for the most part, are spot-on. The story is a shade or two darker than past games, which i enjoy. The big down side is that the weapons break regularly and have to constantly be replaced, although this does ease up a bit as you go. Overall i like the game immensely and believe most zelda fans will, as well.

Breath of the Wild was a long time coming and luckily it was worth the wait. I have always enjoyed Zelda games but I have never been a diehard fan. I have finished a handful of the games and owned most in the series. This is the best Zelda game I have ever played. It is also the most fun I've had with a game in some time. There is so much to do and see and if you have an imagination you can really pull off some cool stuff with your tools and the game's physics.
The game does have a few flaws. The frame rate can dip from time to time. Most of the time it is steady so the drops really stand out. In a couple of places it seems to chug a bit worse. Luckily I have found that I rarely need to venture to those areas and there is no combat involved either. The game's art style looks great but there is no doubt you are playing on the least powerful current gen system. Finally, the weapon breakage is a con for me. I don't like it in any game, but here weapons break constantly. It is annoying and I wish they at least doubled maybe even tripled their current durability.
Even with the flaws, I find the game to be spectacular. For me, the shear size of the world, the endless things to see and do and the tons of enemies to engage make the game rise so far beyond it's faults and even beyond its peers. That's not even taking into account the wonderful new dungeon system. I love that they have broken up the old dungeons (where you couple spend a couple of hours) into bite sized chunks. I would bet there are at least as many puzzles in this game as in the past. Likely, there are many more. I will have a hard time going back to the older games that had you following a narrow path and didn't open up much until the end of the game.
In the end, I would say believe the reviews. This game is something special. It is not perfect, but it is the direction I hope to see the series go in the future. I haven't been hooked on a game like this in years. If you can take the opportunity to sit down and try this out do it. I'd be shocked if the exploration alone didn't hook you.

The very first Nintendo game I ever owned was The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for the Game Boy. It was the first adventure game I had ever played. No game before had challenged me with its puzzles, and gripped me with a story that served as more than a thin plot to build gameplay around. It was the first time I had ever cared about the characters in a game and what happened to them.
The Zelda game, Breath of the Wild, is the first one since then that has made me feel that way. It’s billed as an “open world” game, but more than other games that claim the same, the world in this game truly feels like a real place. Birds nest in trees, wolves hunt in packs, and there are no artificial barriers keeping you from going straight to the final boss - or anywhere else. The attention to detail in every corner of this game amazes me.
The world this game takes place in is thousands of years after any other Zelda game, and a hundred years after a near-apocalypse when the series’ antagonist, Ganon, almost destroyed the world. For the past century, the princess Zelda has been holding him captive with magic, waiting for the hero to wake up from a long, restorative slumber. Your goal, as always, is to defeat Ganon and save the world.
There is so much more to do, though. Scattered all around are short dungeons with one or two puzzles. Every 4 that you clear gives you additional health, which you’ll need to defeat Ganon. They’re also a deft way to teach you how to play the game - they get progressively more difficult, and add on to concepts you learn in previous puzzles.
I’ve played the game for 20 hours, and I’m barely a quarter through it (so far as I can tell). The open-world is a new idea for a Zelda game, but it fits the series so well, you’d think it was always this way. When I’m playing this game, it makes me feel the same awe and wonder that the Game Boy game did when I was a kid - and that’s a special kind of magic.

This is my first Zelda game and man I'm impressed. It's open world with lots of puzzles, climbing, horse riding and monster battles. I've spent about 50 Hrs in the game and I only defeated 1 out of 4 divine beasts (Bosses).
The only problems about this game if I nitpick is the occasional frame rate drop when connected to a TV and that weapons break too fast after a little but of use.
Stop hesitating and get this game already. Also get a Switch while you're at it too :D !!!!

Warning (A few spoilers ahead)
I won’t talk about gameplay or depth of the game, those are perfect as other reviews have said. Easily one of the best open world exploration games in years!
For me it was the story that was the most interesting, a minimalist and bleak story about the aftermath and destruction of Hyrule when link failed to defeat Ganon. Link awakes a thousand years later to piece together forgotten memories and to find a way to defeat Ganon. It’s similar to when you leave the vault in Fallout only to find a few struggling villages and a landscape of monsters in a once beautiful world.
I haven’t played a Zelda game since the N64 so this was a unexpected way to be introduced back to the series...almost feels like it’s been a thousand years since I’ve visited Hyrule :-)
I was hoping to help rebuild Hyrule after defeating Ganon but I guess that’s what a sequel would be for. There is one town you get to help build and a home you can buy and upgrade, but it would have been fun to help even more places grow. That’s a minor complaint and just shows how much I want to stay in that amazing world.
Only downside for me was the lack of music. You will wander for hours exploring and finding shrines and hidden treasures with not much more than the occasional piano chord or trill...then more silence. I get it, totally fits the theme of a place laid to waste, Fallout also has very little music unless you use your in-game radio. Music is only used when an enemy approaches and dramatic once it does begin. My favorite part was finally exploring Hyrule castle and hearing the familiar Zelda theme after waiting for so long.
A game I won’t ever forget, and worth the price of a switch!

I've been following the development and news of this game ever since they first unveiled it via trailer. I was skeptical at first at how they would pull this game off. They claimed that you would be able to travel anywhere at anytime. Any place that you can see, can be visited. And when they said that you could go straight to the final boss from the beginning and bypass the entire game, I was blown away.
Well, those expectations haven't failed me. This game is simply amazing.
From the freedom of exploration to the combat system, everything feels so polished. The visuals in this game are stunning. I am very impressed with the sheer amount of detail that Nintendo put into this game.
There are 120 shrines to visit in the game. These shrines are basically mini-dungeons with puzzles and rewards. I finally finished all 120 shrines today after over 100 hours of game time. And I still find new things in this game every day. The map is just THAT big. Even bigger than that of The Witcher 3 and Skyrim.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this game. The only faults I have found with this game is the areas which drop a bit in frame rate. Also, the weapons system which allows weapons to break. Though, this is a minor gripe since you find SO many weapons to easily replace the ones that break.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys free-roaming titles such as Witcher and Skyrim. And of course, those who are fans of the Zelda series.
This game surpassed my expectations two-fold. It's THAT good. I'm honestly worried about the future of the Zelda series. How can Nintendo top this masterpiece of a game?...

The Legend of Zelda is the one video game series I've followed since it began with the NES. In fact, it's often what leads me to buy a new Nintendo console and thanks to Breath of the Wild I now have a Switch ;)
Breath of the Wild takes some of the best parts of Zelda (the story, characters, weapons, temples, side quests) and adds in some amazing new features (using stealth, enormous open world without restrictions, shrines, 'ancient' technology and enemies, runes [i.e. special powers], and new puzzles). The graphics are amazing and exploring the world of Hyrule never gets boring. There's always something new to find! The main story line is very compelling as well, leading you to many interesting places and challenges around Hyrule. Plus this game is seriously difficult. There are enemies that actually scare me when I see them, and fighting them is no small task. If you're unprepared you will not make it! Many of the shrines offer unique challenges as well, thanks to the features of the Switch and Link's new abilities like moving any metal object, or stopping time.
About three weeks in now, and I still have much to do in this game. I'll reach 100 hours of gameplay fairly soon and I don't think I'll be finished by then.
This is an amazing title and surely a new classic Zelda. It's addictive, it's gorgeous, and most of all it's really, really fun. It's well worth buying a Switch to enjoy this game.

Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild retains some of the most treasured features of a Legend of Zelda game while taking you on a whole new adventure in this epic, open world game. The story is captivating and, in just the first few minutes of gameplay, you will be hooked! I am a mega Legend of Zelda fan with some of my favorite games being Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess. Breath of the Wild vies for top spot amongst them. This game will give you almost endless entertainment if you are an one hundred peecenter like myself. This game does not disapoint!
