    A new open world

BotW is no doubt the main reason to buy the Switch right away, even if it is also out on the Wii U. BotW still has a very zelda feel and traditional zelda story but it takes that and expands it into a massive open world. The thing is its a far different style of open world games than I was expecting. Its more so about just exploring and stumbling upon things than really heading forward in the story. I feel as if its hard to explain how different it is than say a GTA game or Horizon Zero Dawn. This game focus far more on how the world interacts with you(rain is a big factor) and how you can find different routes to get to places you may not want to really be at just yet. But you can be if you try. The world and puzzles make the game insanely fun for me, including the weather. However Im not a fan of the weapon/damage system as I feel it jerks me out of the game having to switch to a new weapon. I do like that it makes you "try" others but still overall an issue for me. The voice acting is alright but the choice of being VO only at certain areas vs the whole game is something else that seems to take me out of the experience, I understand this may not be the case for many tho. I cant really knock the age old story that is Zelda but I must admit the story seems very lackluster overall for me, but at the same time it could have been far worse and I know others love this story telling. Lastly the controls or going back to playing Nintendo games after playing so much Xbox/PS is something that caused plenty of deaths during my gameplay. Just not use to the main button not being on the bottom of the configuration. But this is a bit of a personal issue as well. Overall I enjoyed the game, the world is amazing for being Nintendo as well as the idea that this is on a handheld device. That being said, I believe everyone should play the game themselves and find out if its truly amazing for you or not. Everyone has their own tastes.

Another Amazing Chapter in the Zelda Saga

I have been a Zelda series fan since the original was released in 1986 for the NES. I love the feel of the open world and that there isn't any set order for the majority of the missions. There is so much to see and do throughout the world that before I know it, I am completely immersed in discovering little details hidden throughout the game. The visual styling in the game is excellent and there is no doubt in my mind as to why this won Game of the Year for 2017. I highly recommend using a Pro Controller instead of the Joy-Cons on the switch. I find it much more comfortable for the marathon gaming sessions that I put into this game. Definitely an incredible game that is a must own for any Switch owner!

I didn't read a whole lot going into this game, and I was pleasantly surprised with what I got! There are many changes to the Zelda formula here, yet for all of the changes, it's oddly familiar. Like the original for the NES, this Zelda lets you tackle bosses and areas as you choose in a sprawling open world (though, some areas may be more more difficult to tackle initially than others). The one big negative is the weapon degradation; this is a new feature to the franchise, and doesn't really add anything to the experience. Instead, you tend to hold on to your best weapons instead of getting to enjoy them over your journey, since they'll be destroyed after killing maybe 5 enemies. All in all, a great package and a very relaxing game.

A great game with a few noteworthy flaws

Breath of the Wild is, by far, the most expansive of the Legend of Zelda games, with an open world available to you that rivals The Elder Scrolls games for the sheer size of the world you have to play in. For the first time, it feels like you are running around in a ruined kingdom, with pockets of life forging their way in this post apocalyptic world. The graphics are beautiful, and I feel that Nintendo has managed to nail a visual style that is timeless. There are a few points where it does make identifying things tricky, but overall it is easy to tell what you are looking at, and where you need to go to get what. The gameplay is also fun and intriguing. The different weapons require different play styles to get the most out of - and, with how often the weapons break, you'll need to learn them all to get the most out of the game. However, it does have a few flaws. I won't discuss much about it, but I wasn't overly thrilled with the final fight against Ganon. I am not a fan of his overall character design in this game, and felt that he was a much more interesting villain in previous games in the series, particularly Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess. However, the end of the fight is fun and interesting, so it is not an entirely bad end. Finally, there were a few points where the game chugged when too much was going on at once. Things like taking on 4-5 enemies in the middle of a thunderstorm would lead to the game chugging a bit would bring it to it's knees, but never for more than a few seconds - enough to be noticeable, but not enough to detract from the game. So, overall, this is truly a great game - but it falls just short of perfection. Perhaps with a few more years working with the Switch architecture will bring us a bigger and better game, but for the time being, this game certainly sets the bar high and makes me truly excited to see what the system can bring in the future. Final rating: 9/10.

Breath of the Wild is absolute freedom. The freedom to play however you want, at whatever pace you want. To explore without boundaries. See something up a mountain? Climb it. You have all the tools to complete the game as soon as you leave the tutorial area. It's incredible how liberating that is. The world is vast and sticks in your memory thanks to all the impressive, standout landmarks. The story is simple and kinda vague, but there is a collectible type that helps flesh it out more. An absolute masterpiece of a Zelda game thanks to reinventing the formula. Don't expect dungeons and boss keys and the like. This is a new Zelda for a new generation - and it has never been better.

It's an amazing game. I grew up playing Zelda Ocarina of Time and it is one of my favorite games ever. I never thought there would be another Zelda game that could pull me in like that but I was definitely wrong.

This iteration of Zelda is absolutely amazing. So much attention has been paid to detail. They've really made a living, breathing, game world. It can definitely be challenging, especially towards the beginning. There is a ton of content, and so far it has all be really great. It is easy to get into even if you haven't picked up a Zelda game in a long time. You don't really need a lot of knowledge of the previous games. No graphical issues. Frame rate is smooth, graphics are great. In fact, this is the best looking Zelda game to ever come out. If you are looking to reprise the role of Link, or even jump into it for the first time, as he battles to destroy Ganon, don't hesitate to pick this up. This is really top notch.

Already close to 40 hours into this game and probably only halfway through. This is easily the best Zelda game of the franchise, and probably one of the best games ever made. The experience sucks you in and doesn't let go, giving you an open world to explore with fantastic combat and fun quests. If you haven't bought this game already, then you're missing out on one of the best gaming experiences you could ever hope to have.

Incredible, addicting game with something for every gamer. Its true that you can make combat easier on yourself by the things you do in the world of this game (if you like it easier as I do). But the difficulty of figuring out puzzles, quests, directions, etc never goes away. I played about 160 hours and completed the main quest at about 20% of the whole. I'm not motivated to keep doing everything else to 100% because for me it takes a guide and internet experts for most of it rather than just playing. It was a great experience and it had a really good effect on my life (by taking me out of it!). But I put even more time into a game that I can get more lost in without a guide, like my favorite Skyrim.

Breath of the wild has been a good game. Like most reviewers say, it is very grind-y, and you do have to work on it heavily. I use the game to wind down in my spare time, and because I have the regular sized switch the other member of my house hold plays the game as well. The world is very expansive, and over all it has been a great purchase and I can't wait to see what the company has next for the series. It's definitely one of the best games I've ever played, and not what I expected it to be in a good way.

Very large sandbox world, you can go everywhere, nothing boring about it. Surprised by how well the graphics are and the combat system is not hard to learn. If you ever played a Zelda game, you'll be pleased to know that the game follows the story and game play like older games but way, way better! Only thing I wasn't to happy about is how the weapons and shields break easily but getting replacement gear is not hard to find. Over all, the game will have you hooked in no time and you'll lose yourself and time playing Zelda. Linkheads and Zelda nerds rejoice!!!!!

This is perhaps not the best game ever made but it is certainly the best game in a very long time. In my opinion the only weak part of the game is the dungeons and bosses. They simply arent very challenging or different from each other. That being said the main attraction to this game is the exploration of Hyrule. This is where the game really shines. I have logged over 100 hours and have still not seen everything this game has to offer. I did notice the occasional frame drop but this is easy to overlook when playing such a great game. A must buy for any switch owner.

Disclaimer: I am, and always have been, a huge Legend of Zelda/Nintendo fan, so I am not trying to pretend that I didn't go into this purchase with preconceived notions of the quality. That being said, it surpassed my very high expectations. The map is enormous and the world sucks you in. I love the surprise every time I find something fun that I know has no connection to the storyline (Second disclaimer: I LOVE side quests, and this game has a ton). I have already played for 100+ hours and I don't feel anywhere close to halfway through. To add onto that, I think that this game gives more control over pacing than any other game I've ever played. I personally love to find every single detail and explore every area, which can take forever, but I have friends who have said that they were able to zoom through the main storyline in about 30 hours. It's hard for me to imagine why you would want to do that with a world that is so full and immersive, but I appreciate that the developers catered to both audiences. The only negatives to playing come down to a few technical issues, specifically with controls. Anytime is a motion-sensing aspect in the game it kinda drives me crazy. I disabled the motion-controls for everything that I could, but the one unavoidable area that it comes up is in some of the puzzles throughout the game. I wish that there was a way to recalibrate the controller so that I could tell the switch when my joycon is in the optimal position for completing the puzzle, but it seems like it just locks the orientation in as soon as you start the puzzle. The other thing that drove me crazy when I was first playing is the crouch button, as it is activated by pressing down the left joystick. The issue I have with this is that during intense fights, I often accidentally press it down and end up getting stuck in a crouched position when I was trying to run away or move quickly. I got used to it as I kept playing, but I still wish that the game gave the option of switching which buttons corresponded to which commands. Overall: This game is absolutely incredible. It gives the character an unprecedented amount of freedom, and the world feels virtually limitless.

I'm not a big gamer. I don't have a lot of time to play, and this is the first "serious" game I've played in probably 5 years. But it is absolutely incredible. I spend so much time just wandering around, exploring and staring in awe at the beautiful, immersive world this game creates. It can be a bit slow paced at times because of that, so I'm looking forward to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe coming out to provide a faster paced game alternative when I'm in the mood for something different. But I have a feeling I'll be playing this game for many months to come, and it will end up being one of my all time favorites. This isn't even a genre I usually like, but it's just so well done. I can't recommend it highly enough.

this game is entirely different than every other zelda game in the franchise. not much main story, open world map, hardly any music that we're all used to. if you're looking for another dungeon based linear zelda game this isn't for you, but if you keep an open mind you won't be disappointed. the graphics are beautiful, there's a ton of new elements that make exploration very fun and there's tons of side quests to keep you busy. if you're a completionist like i am, this game is both a dream and a nightmare. can definitely play for hours on end!

    New Zelda in Every Way

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a big change from what most Zelda fans are used to, but even though it introduces all new (for the series) open world concepts and gameplay changes, it maintains that uniquely Zelda feel. On the Switch, graphics look fairly good, though nothing like games on PS4 or XBO. But most gamers know you don't go to Nintendo for cutting edge graphics. Art style works well within the limits of the system, and once you play for a while you do get lost in a beautiful world. Plays well both docked to TV and in handheld mode, although some of the faster-paced combat is a bit rough in handheld mode, due to how you hold it. Overall, a fantastic game on a great new system!
