I've put in a few hours into this game and it retains the good parts of Breath of the Wild while adding new game mechanics. Unfortunately it suffers from slight slow downs when activating the God hand item or entering an area with high enemy or object counts. Still a good game to play if you're a fan of the series.

This may be one of the best Zelda games to date. The new abilities are really cool my favorite being fuse because of the endless possibilities with it. Here is my favorite fusion so far.

An Incredible Entry in the Series

This has been one of my most anticipated games for a few years now, but I will do my best to not come into this review with any sort of a bias. Tears of the Kingdom iterates on what made Breath of the Wild so unique and immersive by adding new mechanics to explore Hyrule. How enjoyable you find these new mechanics will impact how enjoyable you find the experience. No one could recreate Breath of the Wild but this gets close and scratches that same itch.

This is an amazing game; probably my favorite of all of the Zelda options. I loved BOTW so much that I replayed it over and over in regular and master mode, but it always felt limited. TOTK expanded on this in the perfect way. There are some things I wish they had thought through better when executing the final product, but nothing is without its minor complications. Overall recommend even if it's the first Zelda game you've ever played.

Tears of the Kingdom is outstanding in every way. The attention to detail is amazing, the story is compelling, and the new features are complete game-changers (literally). I would have loved a completely new map for this game, as at times it felt like a bit of a rehash of the original, but that was a minor qualm in light of how perfect the game was in every other way. This is probably the Switch's last AAA release, but what a great way to go out.

Very fun and also beautiful graphics. The switch is the perfect medium for this game because you get to have it both ways!Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is fun as a hand held game and shines when played via TV or monitor.

I’ve enjoyed the opening hours a great deal. I liked BOTW but this feels far more enjoyable. Still wish weapon degradation wasn’t a thing, but the new ways you can get around puzzles and combat scenarios helps a lot. Overall this is a fantastic second entry in the newer Zelda style games. The prologue (or opening section) was one of the best I’ve ever played in any video game… ever. Highly recommended (even if you didn’t love BOTW like me).

    A Directionless Followup

After completing the game in 100 hours, I ended up feeling rather disappointed in the overall game after waiting for 4 years since the game's announcement. While many ideas are present to make this game new and interesting, none of them seem to coalesce into an experience that properly expands on the ideas of the previous entry. For example, new mechanics like building and fusing materials are present, but the game also puts a heavy focus on new locations such as the sky islands in the trailer. However, the building mechanics and the locations rarely connect together in meaningful ways that do not feel forced and obvious. Aside from a few occasions, one's building abilities are not challenged in this game and creative thinking is not necessary to solve the puzzles presented. Instead, building breaks many puzzles and allows them to be solved without a clear understanding of the mechanics of the problem. The inclusion of these abilities without integration into locations or puzzles seems strange and a missed opportunity. Along with the new locations, old locations also have changes to make them different. But these changes often result to clutter being added on top of existing locations rather than meaningful alterations. New rocks and decorations may be added, or some new location may be put on the side. These locations do not enhance the experience of exploration, but rather create busy and confusing scenes. These changed locations also do not incorporate the new building mechanics well, leading to the abilities to continue to feel underused. Finally, the game does little to address concerns from the previous game that people hoped to see fixed in this title. Story and dungeons in the last game felt underbaked, and with this entry reusing the same world and mechanics it felt like a great opportunity to create more elaborate narratives and levels. While it appears that Nintendo attempted to create more in these spaces, they ended up making something that feels either of the same quality or worse. All dungeons follow the same structure and can quickly be completed, and the story adds detail and complexity around it without actually constructing a plot in the center. Nor does this plot have relation to any of the new mechanics introduced. It is a shame that these weakest aspects of the previous game do not appear to be any more finished in this one. Overall, while the building and fusing in this game, along with the new locations, may appeal to some and be impressive in a technical sense, the ideas are not properly implemented in a way that makes it feel whole. For a series built on strong direction, this game feels shockingly directionless and unsure of where to go. It would be interesting to learn how the pandemic and development troubles had altered the game's development, and whether there were any major changes that resulted from it.
