IL DIVO- The Promise
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There is more range to their performances of the songs, and the type of song is more diverse. There seems to have been a subtle shift in the dynamics within the group, and to me anyway, they appear to have gelled more as a group. I haven't heard a song they have performed that I didn't like, and their rendition of the songs on this new CD certainly does not disappoint. While "The Promise" is better than Il Divo's last album "Siempre", it's still not "great". Once you play the first few songs through a couple of times, the songs seem to blend together and there is a boring similarity and a sad lack of original songs. It seems to be an awkward split of Il Divo standard "take a pop song and belt it out with an operatic twist" and very classical pieces... I happen to like the songs mid way and on.. it 's a nice album, great for having some wine and just relaxing but to keep on playing it? maybe I have to play it a few more times to get the REAL FEEL of it. are they really just cardboard cut-outs with nice voices and pretty faces?? Well as a woman they are very easy on the eyes and you can feel the testostrone coming at you from every angle...I have seen them perform (not live) but they do have that certain something...so even if their viewers are mostly female,we can use a pick me up in the bad times that we live in..

Something Different
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you're searching for something different, this is a CD you should definitely look into! Most of the songs are sung in Italian, but many of them are familiar songs so you have an idea of what you are listening to. These men are all professionally trained musicians, so the sound is wonderful. I've been to many operas and can recognize their operatic roots. We listen to a lot of classical music around here, and this is something that I definitely wouldn't mind adding to the mix to liven things up. My favorite song on the album was Hallelujah. It's a song I've always liked, but they really brought it to life for me. Being an ABBA fan, I also really enjoyed The Winner Takes it All as well. I was a little disappointed with Amazing Grace - it's one of my favorite songs and I thought that they could have done a lot more with it.

Il Divo makes good on their "Promise" CD
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a One2One Network participant, I received this CD in the mail to listen to and review. I currently own "Ancora," which I love slightly more than this album, but that's not to say that this CD isn't another slam dunk. Packed with emotion and sincerity, the name "Il Divo," (Italian for "Divine (Male)) says it all. As with any album, some songs are superior to others. My personal favorites include "Angelina," "Aleluya," and "Winner Takes It All." This album would make a perfect gift for that loved one who wants to dip their feet into contemporary "popera." I can almost guaruntee it will make a lasting impression on a female baby boomer in your life - I bought "Ancora" for my mom (age 55) as a Christmas gift last year and she fell in love with them. We now share a love for Il Divo, particularly Carlos!

A romance novel of an album.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have seen Il Divo live on television; however, I have never owned one of their albums until The Promise. I was pleased to hear old favorites like Amazing Grace and Hallelujah sung with such unique arrangements. This is wistful music that often peaks to a crescendo. My only wish was to hear more raw emotion in the singers’ voices. Every note was so perfectly controlled that I never got a sense of earnest feeling behind the beautiful words and music. This is most noticeable on The Winner Takes It All. Abba's original is fraught with longing; tthe Il Divo version has a lovely-but-sterile quality. The Promise is relaxing background music for a dinner party or intimate evening. Just be aware that the dramatic moments are reminiscent of the cover of a romance novel -- beautiful, but exaggerated.

worth a listen
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've heard many things about Il Divo over the years, both good and bad, but this is the first opportunity I've had to experience their music. As someone who's not particularly fond of opera, I found "The Promise" to be a surprisingly easy listen. While it was a little jarring to hear an Abba song being sung in opera (can't even imagine how someone could have come up with that), the majority of the album is pleasant surprise that I've listened to more than once or twice in the last couple of days. My personal favorite track is "Hallelujah" - a song I love when performed by John Cale - and it's hauntingly beautiful here. If you're looking for "pop opera", I think the East Village Opera Company is a better way to go, but Il Divo is still more than worth a listen.

Great CD
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was pretty excited to pop this cd into my car and see what they were all about! As soon as the first song began to play, I was in love! Their voices are amazing! They have those nice, soothing voices that just seem to make your problems disapear! I was soon engrossed into listening to their fantastic voices as they sang to me. At least I felt like they were singing straight to me! This album even has my favorite hymn of all time, Amazing Grace as its last song! I have heard some people sing and butcher Amazing Grace, but it is beautiful on this album! I love this cd even though the only song in english was Amazing Grace. The pamphlet inside the cover has the words to every song which I feel is very important!

Great CD!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Greatly enjoyed this! Gorgeous voices and complex melodies combine to create a lovely listening experience. One star off for a few 'showy' bits--there's no need to go over the top as the vocal talent is enough to carry the songs without an overly dramatic ending. I've really enjoyed listening to this during my morning commute as it's relaxing without sending me off to sleep. I see reading through the other reviews that some people weren't aware of the Spanish and Italian lyrics. I think this is a great way to broaden your horizons! It's fun to hear well known songs like Hallelujah in a different language!

Does not do their voies justice
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Somehow before this album, Il Divo had escaped me. I had heard really good things about them, so I was excited to finally get the chance to listen to them. I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't necessarily impressed either. The problem for me wasn't their voices, which were rich and equisite. Not quite the same as other male Opera singers like Andrea Bocelli or Pavarotti, but still amazing in and of itself. It was more the popera songs. Songs like "The Power of Love", "La Promesa" and "The Winner Takes It All" were beautiful, but something was definitely lacking. I felt like I would honestly rather be listing to a pop singer singing this, and almost felt offended to hear such lovely voices singing pop rather than something with complexity such as traditional Opera pieces. However, hearing them sing more classical such as "Adagio" is what made the album. Their voices float and dance with one another, pulling you in to the sweet romance of it. This is what they were ment to sing. The one song that I had to skip was when they started to sing "Hallelujah". The lyrics to this song are so beautiful and I have yet to hear someone sing it the way that Rufus Wainwright did on his take of it. Their voices just did not fit on such a song. All in all, the album is only so-so. A veteren listener of the group may appreciate their style, but this album might turn new listeners away. Let's hope that with their next album that they will turn away from "popera" and sing songs that will do their voices more justice.

The Promise--Il Divo is Passionate
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is no barber shop quartet. They are individually diverse: David Miller is American, Sebastien Izambard is French, Urs Buhler is Swedish and Carlos Marin, Spanish. Together, they ARE IL DIVO. David Miller has a background in Classical Music, has performed on Broadway in La Boheme. Carlos Marin was the Beast in Disney's Beauty and the Beast Musical as well as Marius in Les Miserables. The Promise showcases the profound talent of this group. From the Achingly beautiful Adagio to the beautiful Amazing Grace (the only song on the album in English). At our house we're constantly in banter over a "cover song"...this album does display titles like "The Power of Love, Hallelujah and The Winner Takes All, however, you won't hear them like this anywhere else. The Winner Takes All is a unique version and had me swaying and singing along in English, while Amazing Grace is absolutely THE most beautiful version I have experienced! This album is a fabulous de-stress tool. It fills the room with their beautiful voices and one becomes lost in the variety and rhythm of the words, whether they are in English, Spanish or Italian. While you won't be pulling out the air-guitar, my four and six year old love to put the album on and play air-violin and move their mouths like they are an Opera Star while the three year old "conducts"! This album would be fabulous for background music for a dinner or holiday party, though we didn't appreciate it while driving. It's a great addition to any collection!

Nice....
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had not listened to or heard of Il Divo before, but I received a CD in the mail and was asked to review it. Wow, what a great listening experience. Their music is able to transend language barriers---it did not matter to me that I only understood about 5% of the words. This cd is very soothing and relaxing. I can't believe how much I enjoy listening to them. Honestly, I found 'The Promise' simply outstanding. I enjoy all types of music and am so glad that Il Divo found its way to my door.

The music is so pretty
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Before I received this CD, I had never heard of Il Divo, or of the term "popera". I really like the instrumental portions of the music. All of the songs, except for one are in Spanish. Spanish and opera type music is something I am not used to. While I love Opera and I enjoyed the music on the CD, the Spanish threw me. I don't hate it, but for someone that likes this sort of "popera" you may love it. I will say that I did find myself liking Hallelujah the best. Kind of haunting.

Beautiful music
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was an enjoyable CD to listen to in the office or as background music at home. I love Amazing Grace, so that was a definite favorite of mine on this CD. Please be aware, however, that all but Amazing Grace are in Spanish. This is a great CD to relax to or simply have on as nice background music. It is not something I would necessarily listen to in the car while commuting. The men of Il Divo have the voices of angels. Let’s be honest, the faces of angels, too!

Pleasantly Surprised
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I received The Promise in the mail to review and tell my honest opinion with others. I opened it up right away and popped it into my laptop. The music was very calm, relaxing and soothing. I loved listening to it while working on my computer. While listening to it I envisioned myself curled up on a rainy day with a book, cup of coffee and relaxing. I would suggest this to anyone who wants something relaxing to put on to get away from the busy lives we all lead.

great gift
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had not heard of these guys until this album, and though I'm not a big fan of popera, I thought this album was well thought through. The song selection is varied but not random (a nice curve from Hallelujah to Amazing Grace, from La promessa to La luna). The voices are great - there's no doubt these guys can sing. A great gift this season for those 'soft' opera lovers in your lives - there several in mine getting this!

Beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I listen to classical opera, but am in no way a connoisseur. I had heard of Il Divo, but had not purchased their music in the past. Il Divo has an amazing way of melding four voices together in an operatic quartet on this album. Hearing these romantic ballads in Spanish was beautiful, and allowed me to focus on the actual music and voice range of the four singers. This has to be one of the best renditions of Amazing Grace that I have ever heard, amplified by the beautiful background music and the crispness of the voices (Note that Amazing Grace is the only song in English on the album). I will likely purchase additional Il Divo albums in the future after listening to The Promise. Overall, I think Il Divo is many steps ahead of Josh Groban, but not quite at the original Three Tenors. This album is easy to listen to and would make great background music at a wine tasting or similar party, as well as, everyday listening for the classical opera lover.

Very Enjoyable
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There is absolutely no doubt that these four fine gentlemen can sing. It is particularly enjoyable if you understand foreign languages, which I have the good fortune of being able to do. For those who speak english there is the amazing "Amazing Grace". I suggest that you lay back, close your eyes and let the rest of the songs take you away, I guarantee that Il Divo will take you on a journey.

Loved it!!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Il Divo-The Promise The best way to describe this cd is: LOVED IT!!! This cd released 11-18, and I see great things for this self described “operatic boy band”. This cd is NOT your typical boring opera music! I prefer heavy metal, yet I thoroughly enjoyed this cd! Their music is slow, rich, & full. But don’t let the word operatic throw you! The music is NOT boring! All of the songs but one is not in English, but you do not need to understand the language to enjoy it. The music is GREAT mood music, and I envision enjoying this cd over a candlelight dinner, as well as while I’m surfing the internet! The band will be touring the states in 2009, and I expect to hear a lot more from them! They are a creation of Simon Cowell from American Idol, and have been together since 2004. They have sold over 22 million cds, have performed to over 1.5 million people in 30 countries! They have also had 2 sold out world wide tours!

Il Divo Keeps Promise On New Release
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Prior to receiving this CD, I was only minimally aware of Il Divo, the princes of popera. I had seen them on television several times, and knew that they had amazing voices and harmonies. When I first listened to this, I was blown away. These songs truly showcase Il Divo's incredible harmonies. The instrumentals are expertly arranged. The melodies are deceptively simple, yet compelling. Each song is full of pleasant surprises in harmonies, melodies and dynamics. If you listen, and emerge yourself in the music, you will not only be interested, you will also be lost in the music. With the exception of Amazing Grace, the songs are in Spanish. Regardless if you understand the words, the music emotes the sentiment of the song in a way that makes it easy to understand the message of the music. Songs such as "La Luna", Angelina and Amazing Grace really showcase the power, range and precision of Il Divo's voices.

I liked it
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the first time I have heard of this group and I was pleasantly surprised. I love hearing a good blend of bass and tenor voices and Il Divo delivered. They each have a gorgeous voice that gets even better in a tight harmony. My favorite songs are La Promesa, Hallelujah and Amazing Grace. This will be a wonderful addition to my playlist favorites!
