Continued Evolution from Gary Clark Jr.

On his sophomore LP, Gary Clark Jr., continues his evolution as an artist. This album functions better as a whole than his debut album, mainly because it does not try on as many styles of songs as Blak & Blu. Rather Clark's varied influences (Blues, R&B, Rock, Pop) are melded together more cohesively on Sonny Boy Slim. The main complaint of this, and his previous efforts, are that his studio tracks, while good, do not come close to matching the electricity of his live output. Until he can do that, Clark fans will have to settle for good, but not great.

Gary delivers another great album with his 2nd studio album. I wouldn't say it is quite as great as his first offering, but still some really powerful, soulful guitar playing here. Only thing I would like better is a bit less of the R&B vibe it gets in places and more of the raw bluesy rock he delivers.

Fans of gary clark jr.will enjoy this album and those new to him will want to hear his catalog after giving this a spin. He continues to honor the blues while exploring new sounds on this satisfying collection. Clark is the best young blues/rock guitarist around!

This album is a good album if your a gary clark jr die hard but if your just getting into him i would suggest buying his live album first. That album holds the real gary clark jr talent. But again this is a fair album i just like all his previous ones better.

If all you want from Gary Clark Jr is what he's done before, this may not be a good choice for you. I really enjoyed the varietyI heard on this CD. He's still got great chops, but I was impressed by his versatility.

Gary Clark Jr. remains the best new bluesman to come out of Texas in the last 5 years. Every new release is always reaching and growing his talent. He touches many different genres & not just Blues.

More of a theme-related release, but still shows the guitar chops of this top artist. More blues than rock, but excellent musicianship.

Good album but not what I was hoping for. Only two or three songs that display his guitar playing. More r&b than blues.

Gary Clark Jr weaves many styles of music together here. It is a mix of Blues, Funk, Soul with a taste of Hip Hop. This album shows us where Blues could be going. While I am more of a traditional Blues lover I can appreciate the fresh vision here of what could happen in times to come.

If you are a Gary Clark Jr. fan you will not be disappointed. His guitar playing is excellent as always but the vocals are better than his previous albums. You can see him maturing as an artist on this record. He seems more self assured about his vocal abilities. Highly Recommended.
